re: Avis now offering self-driven SUVs : EDIT : Now DISCONTINUED

This is great happening for India.
And with the kind of risks involved, the collateral, insurance and rent figures look really decent.

Hope this business lives on and people do not abuse it.

re: Avis now offering self-driven SUVs : EDIT : Now DISCONTINUED

That's a great news.
However, I have a few questions.
1. Considering Ladakh is a sketchy affair, how is the damage (if any) to be assessed. For example, if i scratch my cars bumpers, I might not even get them changed. Will Avis charge for the entire cost?
2. In case the car breaks down, where does my liability end. Can i leave it there and fly back?

This business has been on for the last about 8 years.Just that the vehicle available were only sedans. Good to know they have brought 4x4 SUV s as well!

As the clientèle increases so will the prices reduce!

This indeed has to be cleared while you rent it out. In Switzerland, I had made a smallish 1 inch dent/hole in the otherwise new looking hatch. They charged me roughly 600CHF on my card, while providing the bill from garage where the repairs were carried out (posted to me, while I was in Spain).

Since I had declined to pay them fully comprehensive insurance, which was about 30 CHF extra per day apart from the regular rented price with insurance of limited liability.

So while we hire, make sure to clear up-to how much liability would be covered, in case of minor body damage or accident. One learns from own mistakes .

What does this kind of number plate mean?

Cars with these number plates are essentially commercial vehicles, under the self drive category (though you can get a driver for these too). The likes of Avis get a national permit to allow you to take them in any state. However, you are still required to pay the state entry charges which are levied by most states on commercial vehicles. This would have to be paid at state borders and would be over and above the charges you pay to Avis.

Is that different for yellow on black vs black on yellow?
You need a badge to drive any "yellow on white" (Taxi) board vehicle. Your normal license for "LMV" (Light Motor vehicle) is only for private owned vehicles.

You are entitled to drive a "yellow on black" board vehicle with a normal LMV license

^^ AFAIK, it has not been stopped. In April, we did book an Endeavor from Avis (Selfdrive). Pretty neat cars in stock I must say. The entire boooking process was a breeze.

P.S: The selfdrive option is not for all cities.

@Swanand, if you dont mind can I ask where you booked the Endeavour? I tried the Avis website, but self driven cars are not offered as an option in Pune.

@Bala: Selfdrive options are available in select cities only. Pune is not one of them.
We had booked the Endy from Delhi/Gurgaon.
IIRC, the selfdriven options are limited to Delhi NCR & Mumbai as of now.

I had personally booked an Envdevour from Avis Delhi for going to Jim Corbett in March. The vehicle was very well maintained and was amazing to drive. I am attaching a pic of the vehicle for reference.

Thanks dude, I think I will have to plan my next vacation based on where selfdriven cars will be available.

On my wishlist; rent a car in one city and be able to drop it off at another. For example, I take a flight to Bangalore, pick up the rental there and drive to Pune (via Coorg/ Gokarna/ Goa/ Konkan/ where ever I wish). I should be able to drop off the rental car in Pune.
If anyone knows of anyone offering such an option, do let me know!

@Onesomeone: That was the same Endy we booked in April!

@Bala: Avis has that option too. Charges for that may be on the higher side though. However, since selfdriven options are not available in Pune as of now, that seems like a far cry!
