Re: My Experience - Racing in the 2011 VW Polo R Cup!

Both the tracks, kari and chennai track require 3rd and 4th gears. The Buddha Circuit at Noida is what all drivers are waiting for though. Should be a fun challenge with everyone having no previous experience of the circuit.

@Nishant:
It was great having you on track and yes, those lap times are mighty respectable. Definitely one of the fastest journo's in the Polo Cup.

Those results sheet you have posted are the unofficial ones. (i.e. they have mistakes).
You can find the official sheets on www.polocup.in

Re: My Experience - Racing in the 2011 VW Polo R Cup!

Thanks for sharing this Stratos. Excellent view of what happens on the inside of one of these races. But I am a bit curious as to what the components are into making it go upto around 19 Lakhs.

As for the pic of the Honda, has the lenght been increased a bit for some reason or is just my imagination

  • 6-speed gearbox from germany (possibly from the golf)
  • AP Racing disks and callipers up-front
  • Uprated discs and AP racing callipers at the rear

  • Eibach springs
  • 17-inch imported alloys
  • OMP roll-cage
  • OMP racing seat
  • OMP 6-point harness
  • OMP racing steering wheel
  • OMP foam-based, 3 point fire extinguisher system
  • AiM MyChron Data acquisition system

People in the know can add stuff if i have missed out on anything

Re: My Experience - Racing in the 2011 VW Polo R Cup!

Brilliant report! I was checking for the name "Stratos" in the list a couple of times and was wondering why is the name missing !! The pics are superb and ma in love with the car. Its a brilliant move by VW to conduct something of this sort and bring up the talents in India.

So who gets a shot at the next race??

PS:: Would have been nice if we could get a video of your practice / race as well. Sure would have added some techniques into our kitty too.

Super duper! Thats a great end result for a first timer i guess. How i wished i could stay back that weekend, unfortunately had to get back to BLR. Still you covered up lot of that gap with the report

Re: My Experience - Racing in the 2011 VW Polo R Cup!

Nice write up Stratos, very entertaining and informative. Couple of questions
  • You mentioned on 2nd day anti roll bar settings were changed from hard to medium, explain that more, how did it help the car's dynamics?
  • Were there any mods on the engine? i see some switches in the center in place of ICE, what are those for?

Would be nice to throw some light on how 'civilians' can get to participate in the Polo Cup. The procedure, the expenses etc etc. if at all it is possible!

Congrats on your racing experience. You sure have left a lot of BHPians greenish with envy!

There was noticeable difference in the body roll, and I could feel it in the corners.

Other than an aftermarket air filter, I could not see any modifications done to the engine but thats just from the outside. I am sure the engine has been tuned throughly since the ECU is re-mapped.

What you see is the 'Mains' switch which needs to be turned on before starting the car. Secondly, there is a 'Data' switch which turns on the screen behind the steering wheel and displays lap times, digital rev-counter, etc.

Also included in that panel is the fire extinguisher switch.

Fantastic report Stratos. I heard the Polos are real nice to throw around. Any idea how the laptimes compare with the Esteems?

Search the forum. There is lots of information on how you can participate. Its an arrive and drive program and you have to be under a certain age.

the polo's do a quick lap of around 1:16:5xx this year.
Last year, they were quicker at around 1:15:8xx.

the drop is performance could be due to a variety of things, the weather (it was very humid this year), maybe the tyre compound has been tweaked or probably the hood scoops have played with the aerodynamics of the car.

Coming back to the original question,
AFAIK, the esteems clock in at around 1:12:xxx (i am not sure of this)

Simply superb.
One question: How do the skirts help during a race?
