Strong demand for premium and near-premium cars helped BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Citroen buck the downward trend in European new-car sales last month

BMW, which benefitted from the success of its new-generation 3 series, increased sales 3 percent to 55,008 units in April. Mercedes boosted volume 5 percent to 50,896 vehicles last month because of strong demand for the new B class while Audi's sales rose 4 percent to 61,171.

Despite declining sales in April, Volkswagen and Ford remained Europe's No. 1- and No. 2-selling automakers by volume in an overall market that fell 6 percent to 1.06 million.

Demand in the UK rose 3 percent to 142,322 vehicles, while sales in the region's biggest market, Germany, continued to defy a downturn in consumer confidence in the Eurozone countries by rising 3 percent to 274,066.

In France, sales fell 2 percent to 166,552, while in Italy they dropped 18 percent to 130,245. Spain was worst hit with a decline of 22 percent to 56,183.

US Auto sales May 2012

By May, Japanese automakers, particularly Toyota and Honda, were running out of inventory to sell that couldn't be replaced. Toyota sales in the U.S. fell nearly 32 percent in May 2011 and Honda by 22.4 percent. Thus, both these automakers are about to put together a string of months that show industry-leading sales increases, but only because those sales are being compared to last summer's drought.

New-car registrations in Germany, Europe's biggest car market, fell 4.8 percent in May, compared with the same month in 2011

While car registrations dropped to 289,977 last month, they were still 5.8 percent higher than in April, when 274,066 sales were registered

New-car sales in France also dropped last month. Registrations fell 17 percent to 197,671 cars and light delivery trucks from 238,873 in May 2011

Audi tops BMW, Mercedes in China car sales in May!

Audi new-car sales in China rose 44 percent to 36,278 cars last month, putting it ahead of rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

BMW-brand sales rose 31 percent to 25,500, while Mercedes sales increased 1 percent to 16,529 in the same period.

In the first five months, Audi's Chinese sales were up 42 percent to 160,562, while BMW-brand sales rose 34 percent to 125,800. Mercedes sales grew 9 percent to 82,534 in the same period

Audi is targeting annual sales of 2 million cars by 2020 as it seeks to pass BMW, which is currently the best-selling premium brand worldwide

Last year, the BMW brand sold 1.38 million cars and SUVs. Audi sold 1.3 million, while Mercedes-Benz sold 1.26 million

Sales June 2012 - France

French light-vehicle sales fell slightly in June, with France's biggest carmaker PSA/Peugeot-Citroen losing more ground to Volkswagen even as the market decline appeared to slow.

PSA sales fell 9.5 percent to 63,551, while deliveries at domestic rival Renault rose 9.5 percent to 50,018 cars, thanks to a surge of business for its no-frills Dacia brand

Volkswagen Group, Europe's biggest automaker, continued to increase market share with a rise in sales of 3.8 percent to 26,313 for the month. The carmaker's core VW brand surged 11 percent to 15,963

US June 2012 Automotive sales!

Toyota Motor Company was up a full 60.27 percent, followed by American Honda with a 48.77-percent increase. The next closest automaker was Nissan North America with a gain of 28.21 percent, followed closely by Chrysler Group at 20.28 percent, General Motors at 15.51 percent and Ford at 7.03 percent.

Ford quarterly profit drops 57% on European losses.Full year loss projected to cross 1billion USD.

Ford Motor Co., pulled down by widening losses in Europe, today said its profits fell sharply in the second quarter.
Net income declined 57 percent to $1.04 billion, from $2.40 billion a year earlier, as revenues dropped $2.2 billion to $33.3 billion

Toyota Motor Corp. reported a big increase in first-quarter profit and raised its vehicle sales forecast on demand for its cars in North America and Japan.

Toyota's net income increased to 290.3 billion yen ($3.7 billion) in the three months ended June 30, from 1.16 billion yen a year earlier, the company said today in a statement. Profit climbed to the highest level in four year.

Asian markets outside of Japan, including China and India, contributed 101.5 billion yen in operating income, compared with the 104.1 billion yen average analyst estimate.

Germany is the only EU to show growth!

Germany, Europe's largest car market, has managed to buck the trend for falling new-car sales in Europe this year.

In the first six months, the market grew 0.7 percent in comparison with a 20 percent decline in Italy and a 14 percent fall in France, according to the European industry organization ACEA, which predicts that car sales in the European Union will fall this year to the lowest level since 1995.

Hyundai Motor, union seal tentative wage deal.

Hyundai Motors on Thursday reached a tentative wage deal with its South Korean labour union leaders, which if approved by members, would allow the carmaker to avert further production losses that have cut exports and threatened to slow its sales growth.

VW Passat 2012 most successful in the US market.

Honda and Toyota's big gains are easy to explain. Just repeat the line we've been using all summer about these two Japanese giants enjoying the fruits of restored production capacity following last year's onslaught of natural disasters in their home region. Volkswagen's big jump, however, is harder to explain, and looks to be consolidated mostly in the Passat model line where sales jumped from just 314 last August (before the midsize sedan was redesigned) to 10,090 last month. Smaller sales gains from the Golf, Jetta, Beetle,Tiguan and Touareg also contributed.

In the U.S, top two slots are taken by trucks again, Sonata is the biggest loser. Honda had the biggest jump +59.5% and VW +48.2, toyota +45.6%. Hyundai had the least growth YOY.

Toyota, VW, Honda Up Big Again, But Not As Much.

Toyota sales were up 42.33 percent in September compared to the same month last year, though that increase is lower than the prior month's gain of 47.5 percent. Likewise, Volkswagen was up 34.41 last month – far from the 62.54 gain it enjoyed in August. Honda's increase also dropped sharply month-over-month, from 57.88 percent in August to 29.33 percent last month

Car sales fall drastically in France, Italy and Spain.

French September car registrations dropped 18 percent year-on-year, while Spain's plunged 37 percent, the countries' main industry associations said on Monday. In Italy, car sales fell 25.7 percent in September, the transport ministry said.

Volkswagen, Opel and Ford all suffered as new-car registrations in Germany fell 11 percent in September.

In contrast, low-cost brands did well. Hyundai's sales rose 19 percent and sister brand Kia's volume was up nearly 15 percent. VW Group's Skoda brand had an 11 percent increase.
Among premium automaker, BMW brand, together with Mini, increased sales by 9.3 percent last month, while Audi and Mercedes-Benz both saw sales drop in their home market. Audi was down 5.9 percent while Mercedes slipped 11 percent.
