Re: Sergio Marchionne CEO, Chrysler Motors- The Man to Watch Out For!

Sergio Marchionne passed away at age 66 on 25th July 2018. He suffered one cardiac arrest and later another, to which he succumbed. The turn of events were so sudden and shocking. His shoulder injury, hospitalisation straight into the ICU, surgery and untimely death were all in quick succession. The death of Sergio Marchionne is truly shocking for all his admirers. He was a blunt and forthright workaholic who never shied away from firing Managers and others who did not perform. This gave him the results he desired to turnaround the loss making Fiat and later on the nearly bankrupt Chrysler. The better performing employees liked him and endeared him. A link below on his passing away:

His funeral is likely to be private. Quoting from the bitfeed link below, " Probably at its entrance in the clinic in Switzerland, he thought that he would recover soon, that the days of leave would have been enough, but instead, the situation fell suddenly up to the death."

The CEO, a workaholic must have become restless and might have been dreaming of getting back to work from his hospital bed.

There can be some similarities drawn between the two high profile CEO's of Chrysler of recent times. Lee Iacocca, an Italian American headed Chrysler Corporation as it was known then from 1979-92. He started his career as a salesperson at Ford. The Ford Mustang is his creation. He later rose to become CEO of Ford Motors. Basically a marketing person, he did very well as CEO, Ford. But the then owner Henry Ford II and he were at odds since the mid-1970's and he was unceremoniously removed from his CEO's executive suite to a decrepit building in the Ford Motors complex at Detriot and was humiliated very badly. Lee Iacocca chose to resign very soon and joined as CEO, Chrysler in 1979. Chrysler was sinking due to mismanagement. Lee Iacocca turned around the company and reduced the undesired inventories, gestation periods in the manufacturing process, also cutting the deadwood and fat, mostly materially. Most car models in the Chrysler stable were dated and needed replacement. He is not known to have indiscriminately fired his employees by the scores. Soon, Chrysler reported good profits and regained its position as a saleable brand again since the early 1980's. He was very dynamic and result oriented. In 1984, he released his autobiography "Lee Iacocca- An Autobiography" a best seller which is among Yours Truly's best ever read books. I never get tired of reading this book - a must read for all automobile lovers to know the deeper intricacies of automobile business, management, manufacturing and marketing.

Sergio Marchionne was of Canadian- Italian descent. Basically a Finance and Management expert, he was also a non- technical person. He liked and mostly used American management techniques. As already said, he was a workaholic and was very result oriented. In fact, noticing some extra-ordinary personality attributes, Yours Truly had started this thread about seven years ago, dedicated to the outstanding CEO. Firing inefficient employees, especially non-performing Managers was his hallmark. He thus got the results he desired. He wore a black, full sleeve sweater with his trademark blue jeans. A chain smoker, he puffed cigarettes by the dozens. He has not been seen wearing a neck-tie or a suit.

Sadly, he died prematurely, else his autobiography chronicling all the battles he fought and won, would have been a real treasure to read for all his admirers.
