Looks good but still lacks the character of the current Civic in India. I personally don’t think that the mini-Accord look is a plus.

But yes, much better effort than the current Civic in international market.

As of now, it seems like the R18A will be retained for the US market and the 1.6 lt Earth dreams for the European and Indian market.
To add, the 1.5 lt version is also being thoroughly tested for the 'Amaze'. Knowing Honda for their push for diesels in the recent days, the probability of having the 1.6 i-DTec powering this new Civic isn't too far, maybe just after Amaze hits the charts.

As of now, only these much details can be found to be genuine, as too much speculations/redundant data doing the rounds;
The Civic is to get a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder Turbo diesel engine of 118 horsepower (@ 4000 rpm) and 300 Nm of maximum torque, delivered through a six-speed manual transmission of front wheels.



Civic has some serious ground to win back.

It would be a step back if Honda did not launch this in India just because of an absence of a diesel engine. Honda bucks the trend and mends things which aint broke as far as i remember.

It would be foolish to launch a new petrol car in that segment. Many a great car has fallen there because of no diesel. Accord, civic, kizashi, Camry for example.

I'd love to buy petrol. But the volumes will come from diesel. Launching the car without the star product means that the 'newness' will fade by the time you bring diesel in. Not a good idea.

I think India Diesel was more of an excuse because they didn't have an oil-burner except one 2.2L in europe. Diesel technology was never their focus across the world. Finally, when they understood indian market, they have decided to develop a smaller diesel. But it might be too late. Govt has tasted blood - inflation did not spike as expected even after full pass thru of 14% diesel price hike in Nov figures. Now they will do it again after the winter session to free up funds for populist measures in critical 2013 budget. In Nov sales, petrol models made a small come back which you will read in month-end SIAM figures. As a result, long-term petrol-diesel production split will remain a guessing & irritating game for manufacturers. Honda entering late will have a much longer break-even!

That doesn't explain why the Jetta, new elantra, the Laura, corolla still sell petrol variants alongside diesels? Sure petrol "barely" sells if you may, but it's there for a reason. This reason is enough for any manufacturer to think wisely.

Besides i'd shudder to think of all the ads announcing the new civic - now with clatter.

I am not sure if not adding a diesel engine option will be a bad move. Though Corolla has a diesel option I haven't seen many people go for it (other than few taxis). I personally feel adding a diesel may ruin Civic's image. Civic is a petrol car with an attitude. People go for its need to be revved and being nimble.

If Honda is to pick up volume they should focus a diesel city and not make civic a diesel car.
