Joint BMW & Toyota SportsCar in the Pipeline

The BMW & Toyota sportscar will be based on the Z4 & the GT-86;

The powerplant for the joint sports car is speculated to be either a BMW or Toyota inline 4 engine, and not the 2.0L FA20 Subaru Boxer engine that powers the 86. Hence, the 86's platform will need modifications to fit a new engine.

As rumored before, the BMW and Toyota versions of the car are expected to receive significantly different exterior styling.

Finally, the concept from this joint collaboration may be shown at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show in November.

Also note;

BMW & Toyota already had a tie up late in Dec 2011 to supply clean diesel engines for Toyota read more here;

re: Joint BMW & Toyota SportsCar in the Pipeline

Sounds like a slick move, but what might be the motive? At the moment, both BMW & Toyota have hugely capable no-holds-barred small sports cars(RWD, stick-shift) in their line-ups, in the form of the 1M and the GT-86 respectively, which have almost become cult classics already! It'd be interesting to see the positioning of this particular car in both their product portfolios.

This sportscar is likely to be a hybrid. As Toyota is strong in hybrid vehicles it will help BMW develop the same.

The collaboration is also targeted to develop a Fuel cell system to achieve zero emissions.

Also this tech/collaboration is going to be helpful for the development of the New Supra ;

Toyota's incoming chairman, Takeshi Uchiyamada has revealed that he wants their jointly-developed sports car to be a mid-sized vehicle that is comparable to the Supra.

It is also confirmed that this will be a high-performance sports car and will not overlap with the GT 86

BMW is considering 5 in-house options for its future all-new sports car to be produced partly in collaboration with Toyota.

A BMW Spokesperson said;
Quote:
“It could be a mid-engined supercar or a traditional front-engined sports car. We don’t know yet.”

BMW & Toyota to develop the upcoming Z3;

Joint BMW & Toyota SportsCar in the Pipeline-bmwandtoyotatodeveloptheupcomingz3update752817.jpg

BMW & Toyota will develop 2 different cars at first, a roadster for BMW to replace the Z4 and a Coupe for Toyota, to take over where the last Supra left off.

Later on, there will be 2 more models added to their line-ups, in the opposite configurations (a Coupe for BMW and Roadster for Toyota).

The engines will be provided by BMW but the hybrid versions (yes, there will be hybrids too) will be using Toyota technology combined with eDrive innovations.

Re: Joint BMW & Toyota SportsCar in the Pipeline

Toyota is really working hard on getting rid of their 'boring' image. They've made some fab cars recently including the FR-S twins, the new Supra and now this. Good times ahead..

EDIT
BMW & Toyota will develop 2 different cars at first[/b], a roadster for BMW to replace the Z4 and a Coupe for Toyota, to take over where the last Supra left off.

So does this mean that this is the FT-1 concept?

Latest Speculative render of this joint sports car project;

Needless to say there will be a "Toyota" version of this as well, lets wait & watch as by 2017 it will be clear.
