Mahindra developing new car platform in US

Mahindra is aiming to become a top global automotive brand by 2024. For this it is banking on the recently inaugurated Mahindra North American Technical Center (MNATC) in Troy, Michigan.

Autocar India reports that a team of engineers at the centre is working on four-wheeler platform. However, since Mahindra has no immediate plans to enter the passenger car segment in the US, this platform could be used for its upcoming models in international markets.

The MNATC, which can accommodate a total of 125 engineers, provides the infrastructure to design vehicles, engineering expertise, prototyping capabilities and solutions for Mahindra's global database. Currently a team of 40 engineers works at the facility.

Mahindra has R&D facilities at Chennai and Pune in India. Additionally, the company has a base at the SsangYong facility in South Korea and a technical alliance with SYM Motors of Taiwan. With the MNATC, the company will look to enhance its capabilities further in its quest to become a strong global contender.

Re: Mahindra developing new car platform in US

Yes, they have a very good base. They provide decent service to their customers. And even i think, they should try to reach out to new emerging/developed markets.

But Mahindra is targeting US market. Good. But their experience will not be sufficient. It would be a challenge for mahindra's to make products which can be sold in developed countries like US. Already they had somewhat bitter experience with Australian markets. Neither the Ssangyong can help much here as they themselves had a bitter experience.

Countries like US, with very their stringent rules are a bit tougher for new entrants like Mahindra. The Oldest GM is being ripped like hell in US for mistakes. The products from new companies will be scrutinized hard to ensure that cant get away easily like they do in their home countries.

I am not sure whether they will be able to crack it or not, but It would be a very good learning for them. I wish them All the best !!

This is probably an effort from Mahindra to get some international expertise in its R&D. They cannot hope to recruit talent from any of global players if they were to come to India and work. Not many foreign nationals would prefer that. With a base in US, they could recruit these guys there and still cater to the global R&D. This could be a very good move from M&M

Mahindra is rumoured to be developing an all-new MPV at the Mahindra North American Technical Centre. The new MPV is likely to replace the Xylo in 2017.
