The oldest advert wars one could possibly think of, is between PEPSI and Coca Cola.
This might be off topic but(non car related), boy what an open battle.

Classic VW Beetle ads -all time benchmark for advertising

If you're in advertising, the next time you see your superior ask them what, in their opinion, is the best advertising campaign of all time.
Some may answer, "That's easy - it was the campaign that I myself crafted!" Others may reply that it is impossible to rank and choose the best campaign. Now ask them, "How do you feel about the VW Beetle ads?"
The series of ads that ran from 1959 to 1976 (and never felt dated, by the way) is today widely considered one of the best advertising campaigns ever. In fact, if there were such an award as "Best Advertising of the 20th Century," I am certain that these ads would win hands down.
We'd like you to find out for yourselves what made these VW Beetle ads special. The expressions. The creative ideas. The power.
Here are some of the many things I learned from the ads:

Advertising should be fun.
Take a look at any of these ads. Many are surprising or shocking, though in a positive way. As you read the copy and get drawn in, they reveal a sense of fun that quickly wins you over.

The best advertising changes the viewer's outlook on life.
The "Think Small" ads are an excellent example. During an age when owning a large and luxurious car was a status symbol, this famous ad preached the exact opposite!

"Fact" initiates the branding process
Given unlimited resources, a tactic that pushes image only can work well. In this case, however, the advertising firm DDB of the USA did not have a large budget, so they had to choose a different method.

We wanted copywriters and art directors from around the world to see this, which is why we put it on the Web. We recommend it to not only people in advertising, but also to anyone involved in project planning and development. To us it is much more than just a car ad -- it's a model of the creative process.

Moreover, it’s all fun in the end.

The BMW ads are just brilliant. The Germans excel in marketing as well? Maybe they do have a sense of humour after all.
