IEA: SUV sales are cancelling out emission gains from EVs

A new report from the IEA states that SUV sales have risen disproportionately and have cancelled out emission gains from EVs. SUVs emissions from the sector has risen, according to the IEA because of higher sale numbers.

The report points out a rising trend of increasing SUV sales globally.

This will mean a greater pressure on automobile manufacturers to curb SUV sales irrespective of even if they are with more efficient engines. Its a volume game.

Thread moved from the Assembly Line to the International Scene. Thanks for sharing!

Would say that the report is a bit premature. Reasons:

1. EV sales are at the nascent stage. They've only just begun. Even in USA, EVs constitute <2% of the market.

2. We'll be seeing electric SUVs & Crossovers too shortly. A few models have already been introduced (e.g. Audi E-Tron).

Re: IEA: SUV sales are cancelling out emission gains from EVs

I am sure this is more alarmist hyperbole. What is the definition of SUVs according to the IEA? Does the Hyundai Venue and the Lincoln Navigator XL come in the same category? This kind of idiotic reports should come with a warning that the authors' jobs depend on the conclusion they arrived at.

Electric Crossovers are in the pipeline of most manufacturers, Audi, Jag and Mercedes already have them on sale, in fact they are the only ones on sale. The body type is much better suited for electric and the report is based on the assumption that it won't happen. Luckily for these authors, they have the backing of media, politicians and other assorted professional agitators for their cause. They would laughed be out of the room in any sane scientific discussion.

Glad it's an "International" body. There may be some objectivity in their findings, based on ground data and ground truths. The SUV's are much preferred by many buyers over cars and many of those sold in the US (also exported to many markets) are huge. Many of the luxury brands make huge SUV's.

But coming to IEA, had it been "Indian Energy Agency", the first blame would have been put on 15 year plus private cars (not discussing about commercial vehicles as only a some follow maintenance schedules) as the most polluting and the strongest case for a ban. And the policy makers with FADA and SIAM, would have launched a chorus to implement such a ban. And these oldies, the most soft targets, would have been ultimately banned.

The Delhi smog has gotten worse, despite the total ban on 10 year plus diesels and 15 plus year old gasoline engine private cars. The real causative factors have never been identified, nor has any effort been made to do so either by the NGT or the Transport Ministry or the Environment and Forest Ministry. A scientific study by reputed research institutes to pin point the real causative factors was never undertaken.

Sorry to veer off the main topic under discussion here. Yes, the IEA study will most likely put pressure on SUV sales the world over.
