re: SSC Tuatara clocks average top speed of 455 kmph; breaks speed record for production cars

I am disappointed
Did they really think they would get away with it considering how many other companies are invested in this record.
I really hope they can provide the data to confirm they indeed broke the record. How will we trust anything anymore otherwise.

That is true indeed and the reason for that as per Bugatti is that, after decades of cars pounding over Ehra-Lessien’s surface in the clockwise direction, the tarmac structure has rolled that way. Run it in the opposite direction, and you’re working against the grain, causing huge heat build up in the tyres (which ends badly). A two-lane highway doesn’t have this issue.

Tyres play the most important role at these speeds and that is why officials from Michellin are always present at such events when their Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres are used to collect data.

Hence, I was interested in knowing which tyres the SSC Tuatara was running as they had no Michellin officials present on such an important event???

Also, even James (Thestradman) who was present at the event was not allowed to film it strangely...

Okay thanks for the buggati clarification.

Also I read on social media that the tuatara too was running on Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres and that is one more question everyone had that since it was the same tyres how was it able to completely obliterate the previous record and whether the tyres were rated for doing such speeds

re: SSC Tuatara clocks average top speed of 455 kmph; breaks speed record for production cars

Jerod Shelby owner of SSC put out a per personal video on the Top Speed controversy.

Net Net he said that they will prepare for a rerun in the near future and would personally invite Tim, Robert and Misha to see and experience his very special car personally and to tell the world what this car is capable off

re: SSC Tuatara clocks average top speed of 455 kmph; breaks speed record for production cars

Another interesting video analysis done by Julian Thomas owner of Racelogic the company which supplies VBOX to some leading car companies and also were involved with Koenigsegg in their last Top Speed run.

Video link:

According to him the true Vmax speed as per the video data was as below:
SSC Tuatara clocks average top speed of 455 kmph; breaks speed record for production cars-e89657ba96bf4e4e97b64e5568bb41fe.jpeg

SSC really need to clear the air soon and not wait for months to do a rerun as at the moment they seemed to have pulled a fast one on the car community by their self claimed Top Speed run and many Supercar/Hypercar owners want clarity as they have not been happy with SSC response till date.

One such owner went to the extend and said he will pay (USD 60k) to shut down highway 160 where the run was done if SSC are willing to do the run before the end of this year.

And in all this drama Top Gear and Motor Trend have become the joke of the town for their reporting of the entire event without reconfirming and analysing any facts.

Jason from Engineering explained has had time to discuss with the stakeholders and arrive at his math in this video.

re: SSC Tuatara clocks average top speed of 455 kmph; breaks speed record for production cars

SSC did another attempt at the record run. The Youtube Sleuths, Misha, Robert and Tim were invited to the run. Due to logistical reasons only Robert Mitchell was able to attend the attempt.

Here is his report on the attempt. And a very comprehensive report at that. SSC seems to have gone the extra mile to address all concerns about data points and redundancies.

Even though this was an unsuccessful attempt, they were unlucky this time. Also Robert is fairly optimistic that the car can do some serious speed. (May be 300, may not be, but for sure would be among the fastest on this planet.

This is SSC doing the right thing and that will do a whole lot of good to their image. There will be a later attempt of course. Let us wish the underdogs the best.

re: SSC Tuatara clocks average top speed of 455 kmph; breaks speed record for production cars

Its official now. SSC Tuatara is the fastest car in the world.

It averaged a speed of 282.9 mph on an average of two runs in opposite directions of 279.7 mph and 286.1 mph

It was obvious from Shmee150's recent videos that he had been invited to the USA for the record run. But as luck would have it, he did not get the necessary security clearances to witness the actual run and Robert Mitchell was the only person among the trio of youtubers who witnessed this record run.

The vlog appended is interesting to see as it is clear that with SSC team improvising to extend the length of the runway. It is very evident by the way the vehicle is gathering speed at Vmax that given a longer straight this vechicle is capable of much higher top speeds.

Good to see this scrappy little outfit produced this car. True underdog story.

The video explains why 300mph is such a difficult feat.
