I had written at length about Badge Engineering couple of years back

What a nice car it is. I had it with me for a long weekend in Cyprus and I thoroughly enjoyed it even though it was quite underpowered, especially at triple digit speeds.

This car reeked of quality in every part and panel, something that is amiss in our country's cars at this price point.
Also, the variation I had was supposedly base variant but I was pretty surprised to see 4 airbags, rear wiper, defogger, ice warning and all sort of safety aids in such a low priced, basic car.

The Sierra went on to the UK as the Tata Gurkha as well.

May be because "Sierra" is already registered/used by someone else, may be GMC Sierra ?

Not GM but Ford used Sierra nameplate for their midsize sedan in UK.

Re: The most rebadged cars in the world

Most badge engineered vehicles stay in the same price category. But some lucky ones get elevated.e.g.:
Nissan Navara to Mercedes X-Class.

I'd hate to be an X-Class buyer when I see this:

It was also the Daewoo Nubira, meant to come to India just when operations closed.

The Cielo was the Opel Astra and both were derived from the GM cadet

Adding one more to this elite list - Scion iQ and Aston Martin Cygnet.

I sometimes wonder what makes the decision makers take such decisions? How would they have convinced themselves that this is a good decision?!

Re: The most rebadged cars in the world

Interestingly, Suzuki may not be world famous brand itself in passenger vehicles, but it supplies ready made vehicles as an OEM to more than 15 other well-known brands worldwide.

Re: The most rebadged cars in the world

Fascinating! I've always been intrigued about rebadging models to suit the prevalent tastes, sensibilities and brand sentiments of each market. It was interesting how Opel was a fiasco in India, whereas if sold as Chevrolets, the same models might have done a lot better thanks to the brand being better known (the story of Chevrolet itself is a different matter, of course, but at least they did a lot better than other GM brands here).

Onerous though it is, it'd be terrific if someone would tabulate all this wealth of knowledge; the various models sold in different names and under different brands as a ready reckoner, replete with thumbnail images, downloadable as a PDF or viewable as an online Google spreadsheet: should be a geek's delight!

This thread also warmed the cockles of my heart with nostalgia, as it took me back to when the Santro and the (then) Daewoo Matiz were new, and I remember being excited at the first scoop of the i20 and the Ritz in magazines a year before their launch!

Re: The most rebadged cars in the world

One thing I realized after looking at the countless number of photos in this thread. It's not just Maruti-Suzuki that makes the world's ugliest cars

I am surprised too. But it is good that this re-badging and the original engineering has come to a full stop, at least in India
