In 2020, most car shows were cancelled as the coronavirus swept across the world. This year, countries are reporting a rise in cases due to more infectious variants of the virus. Covid-19 cases in Japan are also rising which could result in yet another state of emergency being imposed in Tokyo and other cities.

According to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), around 1.3 million people visited the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Re: Covid-19: 2021 Tokyo Motor Show cancelled

The Tokyo motor show has been cancelled for the first time since the inaugural event in 1954, due to the ongoing pandemic.

Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda, who also serves as chairman of event organiser the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said, When the Tokyo motor show returns in 2022 or 2023, it will be rebranded as Tokyo Mobility Show to reflect the increasingly diverse field of transportation solutions on offer from Japanese manufacturers.

Re: Covid-19: 2021 Tokyo Motor Show cancelled

Honestly, I find car shows overall to be quite meaningless in the digital age. As a networking event between industry honchos, as well as car makers <-> media, sure, there is value. Lots of deals are cut at these expos on the empty media days. But for the general public days, oh my god! It's a royal mess. I don't know why any regular visitor would bother going to an expo to check out cars with that kind of crowd and restrictions (many brands just keep their cars locked or cordoned off).

No wonder that the Indian Auto Expo is a bi-annual event, not annual. They know they won't be able to fill up all the stalls. And even then, so many car makers have started bunking the expo.

Like CD players, expos are a relic from the pre-internet days that deserve to die. New cars can get a lot more exposure if the same money is spent better, at other times of the year.
