According to Volkswagen USA, the breach also includes data of potential customers, who had merely inquired about purchasing either an Audi or Volkswagen vehicle.

The data is said to have been stolen by an outside vendor used by VW, Audi and their respective dealers. The data had been collected between 2014 and 2019 for marketing purposes. The report states that Volkswagen and Audi have already reached out to around 90,000 customers, especially those who had shared sensitive details.

Re: Volkswagen & Audi hit by data breach exposing details of 3 million customers

Of late there have been too many cases of data breaches taking place. What is the deal behind that ? Don't these big firms have system administrators that can take care of situations like these ? If they are so eager to collect data, it is about time that they started securing the data too.

A letter sent out regarding the breach can be read at the source link shared below:

Quote:
Volkswagen says more than 3.3 million customers had their information exposed after one of its vendors left a cache of customer data unsecured on the internet.

The car maker said in a letter that the vendor, used by Volkswagen, its subsidiary Audi and authorized dealers in the U.S. and Canada, left the customer data spanning 2014 to 2019 unprotected over a two-year window between August 2019 and May 2021.
