All-new third-gen Audi Q5 spied ahead of 2024 launch

Audi is working on an all-new iteration of its popular SUV, the Q5. The mid-size SUV will soon get a completely redesigned third-generation iteration. It is expected to be globally unveiled by late-2023, while its international market launch could take place in early-2024.

The all-new third-gen Audi Q5 has now been spied testing ahead of its global unveil. The spy images showcase a completely camouflaged SUV, albeit revealing a few exterior design details. As seen in these images, the upcoming Q5 will come with a more angular front end with vertical air intakes below the high-mounted LED headlamps. The rear could come with a full-width LED light bar and a redesigned rear bumper with auxiliary lights.

Audi is expected to give the new Q5 a completely revamped interior, including larger screens, a new dashboard layout and plenty of features and tech.

The third-gen Audi Q5 will be underpinned by Volkswagen's updated MLB platform, which will also be used on the upcoming A4 sedan. While specifications of the Q5 are yet to be confirmed, Audi is expected to offer the SUV with a varied set of petrol and diesel powertrain options, alongside plug-in hybrid versions.

Hopefully they bring more powertrain options here this time. I remember when audi used to give you everything from petrol and diesel 4 pots, 6 cylinders to full on V8s with AWD in even some of their sedans. Nowadays everything in their lineup seems to use the same lethargic 4 cylinder petrol engine which I believe is the major reason their sales have declined so much. Indians love their diesels, even the rich who mainly get these cars as highway cruisers.

That 2.0TFSI engine in Q5 may be ubiquitous but by no means is lethargic. As of today, it does 0-100 below 6 seconds and can beat both BMW X3 and Merc GLC with base 2.0 petrol engines in 0-100.

That’s surprisingly good. I just saw the 2.0 and figured it was the same state of tune as the A4, and q3.

Here is the excerpt for Q5 45TFSI:

Weighing a scant five pounds more than the previous example, our 4185-pound Q5 45 ran to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds at 97 mph—plenty fleet in regular use and 0.2 second quicker than the 2018 model in both measures. If you find yourself drag-racing a four-cylinder BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC-class out of the Starbucks lot, know that the Q5 has enough scoot to beat the Bimmer by a few tenths of a second and will run neck and neck with the Benz.

I understand Audi (de)tunes 2.0T in many unexciting configurations though!

Next-Gen Audi Q5 spied, Current Vs. the Upcoming:

Quote:
the test vehicle appears to be hiding a design derived from the latest crop of EVs carrying the fabled Four Rings. The dual exhaust tips make it crystal clear we're dealing with a prototype powered by a good ol' combustion engine.
Quote:
the very last Q5 to come with ICEs since the German brand will launch only electric vehicles from 2026. While the prototype does have the full production body and final headlights, the basic taillights are a provisional setup.
Quote:
spotted next to the current Q5 leads us to believe the next-gen vehicle will be a tad slower. However, the difference in height might stem from a stiffer suspension setup for the next-gen Q5. It could be an S-Line version, which would explain the red brake calipers. The other test vehicle caught on the road had surprisingly large exhaust tips, and we're hoping they're real since Audi has had some ghastly fake exhausts in recent years.
Quote:
spy shots provide a peek inside the fully redesigned cabin with a tablet-like infotainment sticking out from the center console. There's an unusually large Quattro logo mounted below the touchscreen, and we're noticing a few physical buttons ahead of the red emergency button. Like the big screen, the driver's digital instrument cluster isn't incorporated into the dashboard either as it sticks out as well. Overall, the dash layout is shared with the next-gen A4.
Expect a 2023 launch.

Pleasant surprise - thought Audi would have let the current gen ICE die a slow death and replace straight with EV Q5.

By the way, what are the red 'emergency stop' type knobs on the central console. One is probably the start-stop button, but the others?
