Toyota is going to unveil a new SUV based on its Raize on the 15th of May. They've named it as Urban Cruiser Icon. It will be a Creta rival and sold only in ASEAN countries and not expected to be launched in India.

Not to be mistaken by the now discontinued Urban Cruiser and the Urban Cruiser Hyryder that we know in India, the all-new Toyota Urban Cruiser Icon SUV will be a completely different vehicleInternally codenamed D03B, it will be based on the Daihatsu DNGA platform that underpins models like the Toyota Avanza, the popular Toyota Raize SUV and a few others in markets like Indonesia and other ASEAN regions.

While it is being called the Urban Cruiser Icon by Toyota for now, sources tell us this new SUV could take the market name as “Yaris Cross” upon launch in Indonesia, which will be the first market where it goes on sale. Interestingly, Toyota already has an SUV by the name “Yaris Cross” in some international markets, and it is based on the TNGA-B architecture. This is completely different than the one that will debut next week, which will be longer and more spacious.

This new SUV from Toyota will sit above the Raize – that's four metres long – and will be around 4.3 metres long. It will be a five-seat SUV and is likely to share its wheelbase with the Avanza, which is 2,655mm. This could translate in more cabin space than its direct rival, the Hyundai Creta, which has a wheelbase of 2,610mm.

What's up with this new trend of India's market not even being considered worthy of ASEAN. Is Indian car market being observed in isolation (like China specific models) when compared to other car markets? I always read that cars launched in these markets like LATAM, ASEAN, EU and Americas are not being considered or heavily reworked for Indian market. Are we not being seen as a potential market for growth or are we still being considered as a market yet to mature?

Remember the camouflaged Toyota Yaris cross spotted testing in India. Most probably it is the same car that will be unveiled on 15th.

The design is known as D03B and was made for emerging markets, just like the Yaris sold in Brazil (sold in Asia as Yaris ATIV). For now, the site calls the car Yaris Crossover because of the kinship, but should not use this name in the final version.

Toyota will use the DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) architecture, a foundation made by Daihatsu for cheaper cars and which has several principles similar to those of TNGA. One of the main points is that it is ready for electrification and this will be an important bet.

this compact SUV will have a 1.5 hybrid version with the system called "e-Smart". It has the same principle as Nissan's e-Power, using the combustion engine only as a power generator for the batteries, while the car is actually powered by an electric propellant. The technology is used by the Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize, two SUVs sold in Asia.

It won't be the only powertrain option, as Thai media point out that it will have the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, combined with a CVT gearbox. If it is the same set that equips the Yaris in Indonesia, it will have 106 hp and 14 kgfm of torque, working with an automatic transmission of the CVT type. By sharing parts with the Yaris, it should adopt an independent suspension of the MacPherson type at the front and torsion axle at the rear.

Here in Brazil, the car is called Project D90B and was in a phase of quotation of parts with suppliers.

TBH, we get better products than ASEAN as these vehicles Raize and new SUV Icon, are all based on inferior Daihatsu platform. While Brezza and Grand Vitara/Hyryder are based on Suzuki's Global C Platform, which is designed to cruise on Germany's high speed Autobahn (Scross and European Vitara).

BTW Toyota badges Suzuki's are exported to African countries like South Africa (Glanza (called Starlet) is a big hit there), Egypt and Middle East.

Toyota should really drop this Urban Cruiser moniker. Nobody uses them anyway, people just say Hyryder and people will just say Icon. Does Toyota really think folks will get confused because a Ford sedan twenty years ago had a similar name?

but everything indicates that the SUV in question is the so-called model internally known by the code D90B/D03B. It will be based on the DNGA platform, considered a simpler version of the TNGA architecture. The adaptation was designed by Daihatsu, a brand belonging to the Toyota group and which in recent years has taken over the development of the brand's products for emerging markets.

In the Asian market, the new compact SUV will be positioned above the Raize and below the Corolla Cross

Among the names considered for the model, highlight Urban Cruiser Icon, Taisor and Yaris Cross (homonym to the more refined European equivalent).

World Premiere of the newest Toyota model: Yaris Cross

This locally produced car carries a 2NR-VE 1,500 cc four-cylinder VVT-i engine that can release 78 kW and 138 Nm of torque. While the engine in the version has a different code, 2NR-VEX, the cubication is the same 1,500 cc but the power is greater 82 kW.

To deliver power to the front wheels, the hybrid version is only available with a CVT option, while the conventional model has another transmission option: a five-speed manual.


When it goes on sale, the Yaris Cross will be below Toyota's other two-row SUVs such as the C-HR and Corolla Cross, but above the Raize.

This model will complete the list of hybrid cars in Indonesia and also become Toyota's cheapest model for the environmentally friendly vehicle segment.

Oh, that looks like a grumpy old Bulldog. (No offence to owners of either of these 2).

The HyRyder looks much sharper than this one. But I doubt if this is the Urban Cruiser Icon. That may be another model. Or did they mean that the Yaris Cross is the "Urban Cruiser Icon"? The naming system is too confusing.

I do like its design especially the rear. Kudos to Toyota for placing headlights where they are supposed to be. Even the wheels look good!

Hope they price this one sensibly.

I hope this is not too closely related to the Toyota Yaris sedan which was sold for a very brief period of time, here in India.

IIRC, the reason the Indian Yaris flopped was due to cramped interiors. It was priced to match the Honda City, but the rear-bench was only wide enough to accommodate 2 people comfortably (same problem as the last-gen Ford Fiesta sedan we had in India).

If they expect this to rival the Creta, it must have enough interior space.

Thats Toyota Rav4 with a sad face. Rear design resembles Rav4 to a large extent and side profile reminds me of Mazda CX-5 sold in US and UK
