Study: Range Rover SUV has the most loyal repeat buyers so far in 2023

According to a new study by S&P Global Mobility, the new Range Rover has the highest loyalty rate among its customers.

The luxury SUV beat the likes of the Ford F-Series & Tesla Model Y with a 41.1% loyalty rate through April - the highest among vehicles with more than 350 return-to-market households. The Ford F-Series came in a close second with a 41.0% loyalty rate while the Model Y had 40%. The loyalty rate of all three vehicles was well above the industry average, which stood at 25.1%.

The high loyalty rate of the Range Rover helped boost Land Rover's brand loyalty to 38.9% - a 9.5% increase over the previous year. This though falters in comparison to Tesla, which has a brand loyalty rate of 68%.

The high loyalty rate is due to the redesigned iteration of the Range Rover SUV, whose deliveries started last year. The new version of the SUV seems to have become a hit, especially among current owners, says the study.

I am not surprised at all. A friend of mine who has a Range Rover Sport has now just brought home a brand new Defender as he waits for delivery of the full-fledged Range Rover. As he was telling me, once you drive a Range Rover, nothing else comes close in terms of pride of ownership.

With Range Rover now offering 5 year warranties and service plans, a lot of the ambiguity on service costs is addressed, atleast for the initial years. For most such folks, they flip the car for a newer one as the warranty period comes to a close.

Very believable. I haven't forgotten any Range Rover I've driven - they are all incredibly special. The quality of the drive, "feel good" factor, suspension, presence, opulent interior and badge are second to none.

They can also be a nightmare to maintain and chew through your bank balance. Perhaps, the loyalty comes from the fact that its owners are the uber-rich who wouldn't care about maintenance costs, and have other luxury cars to use when their Range Rover is in the garage.

This is why I take these "surveys" with a pinch of salt.

It's barely 3 years since the Model Y came out. How can there be return customers? I call BS on this survey!

"Loyalty is determined when a household that owns a new vehicle returns to market and acquires another new vehicle of the same make, model or manufacturer. The newly acquired vehicle may be either a replacement or an addition to the household fleet."

"This is true for Tesla in even the Australian context when it goes to repeat customer ownership.

We have seen it here in Australia with timings in Tesla Model 3 listings. According to carloop‘s used Tesla tracker, the used Model 3 listings increased sharply on the back of the new Tesla Model Y launch back in July 2022. "

My understanding is as below,
  1. Household has a Model 3 and adds a new Model Y to their garage: Tesla (the company), and Model Y (the model) get loyalty points.
  2. Household has a Model 3 and replaces it with a new Model Y: Tesla (the company) and Model Y (the model) get loyalty points.
That'll probably explain it. Also, I have seen a number of people exchanging their Model 3 for a Model Y. Too easy with 3-year leases anyways. Much like moving from an iPhone 12 to iPhone 14 for example.

Coming to the Range Rover, I'm not surprised.

Someone else said it better,

"Range Rover Velar, Discovery, and Range Rover Evoque all won Model-Level Residual Value Awards for 2023 from the J.D. Power Awards - meaning they are the most likely vehicles to hold the highest percentage of their MSRP value after three years. But you need to take the good with the bad... In what has become a self-deprecating running joke among passionate Land Rover owners, the brand has once again taken the bottom spot in the JD Power Dependability Study, with 273 issues per 100 vehicles, continuing a decades-long record of being at or near the bottom of the list.

The moral of it all? If you like your car, you’ll put up with a locked-up touchscreen or Bluetooth misconnect. Land Rover’s sales and backorder list suggest that plenty of people aren’t concerned about what JD Power says, as they remain one of the most desirable automotive marques."

Also, this characteristic isn't restricted to the rich. People have warmed up to two-generations of Thars which IMHO are WIP engineering products and certainly not cheap!

Thanks for the source. I had checked the original link and that didn't have a methodology section or maybe I missed it. That makes sense, actually it's not a survey and they say they've analysed 11.7 million vehicle purchases, using 2022 registration data. WOW didn't know one could access this kind of data at a household level.
