Pininfarina Sintesi

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_15.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarinasintesi_concept_2008_05.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_09.jpg

The Pininfarina Sintesi is a sports car developed by a highly innovative approach: it does not consider the car as a shape that covers the mechanicals, but one that gives a shape to the mechanicals around the passengers, starting from the latter. This approach, which is known as “Liquid” Packaging, has overturned traditional volumetric balances, improving weight distribution and lowering the centre of gravity, which are important elements for driving dynamics.

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_17.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_20.jpg

This was made possible by close collaboration with Nuvera, which developed the Quadrivium Fuel Cells system, the various components of which were distributed around the car, with four fuel cells positioned near to the wheels. The result is that the space for passengers is much more generous – in proportion to the total volume of the car – without detracting from the sporty line with its relaxed, elegant profile which is sleek, tapered and aerodynamic (Cd = 0.27). The modular nature of the fuel cells, combined with the batteries and a sophisticated overall electronic architecture (developed with PI Shurlok), allows for modular use of the available power depending on driving conditions.

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_05.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_04.jpg

The Sintesi was imagined in a setting of Transparent Mobility which, thanks to Clancast®, the radio technology developed by Reicom after years of research, envisages that all cars act as nerve cells, creating a dynamic communications network managed by a disseminated intelligence. A real “living connective tissue” on which data and information about traffic and security, audio and video, Internet and cross-media content can travel. A concept of wireless connectivity that establishes a continuous, transparent dialogue between the town, the road and the vehicles that we will drive in the future, without limiting the motorist’s autonomy, but increasing his sense of freedom.

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_03.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_02.jpg

This futuristic scenario, based on concrete, existing technology, opens the door to advanced active safety solutions which in turn have made it possible to design the car with volumes that are not conditioned by today’s bulky passive safety systems.

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarina_sintesi_01.jpg

The important role played by electronics in the Sintesi project is also evident in the design of the interior and the lights. Inside, the facia symbolises the flow of information in which the car moves. Created as a single semi-transparent piece by Materialise, using the additive technology of personalised manufacturing, its shape disseminates the information around the passenger compartment thanks to the intuitive use of colour and light.

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarinasintesiconceptinterior1920x1440.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-pininfarinasintesiconceptinterior1280x960.jpg

The lights become focal points through which the car dialogues with its environment. In addition to the innovative LED system supplied by Osram, which made it possible to create a simple, strong shape that underlines the car’s central axis, the ‘headlights’ also incorporate the telecameras and the proximity radar system.

To celebrate 20 years as a brand Infiniti has produced a stunning concept car for the 2009 International Motor Show in Geneva. The Infiniti Essence is the world’s most powerful Hybrid car with a total of 600 horsepower combined output from its V6 twin turbo and electric motor. The luxury sports car hybrid offers enormous power on the open road and zero emission driving in urban settings.

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessenceconceptinparis_4.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessenceconceptinparis.jpg

In specification the car has a 3.7 liter V6 DOHC Twin Turbo VQ based engine (VQ37DETT) putting out 434 hp (320 Kw) in a rear wheel drive FM (Front Midship) platform currently used in modified form in both the Nissan GT-R, 350Z and Infiniti V36. An additional 158 hp (116 Kw) and 500 Nm comes from the twin clutch mounted Disc type electric motor giving a total of 592 hp (435 Kw). No combined torque figure was released by Infiniti but it should be in the region of 1088 Nm (802 Ft/lb)

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessenceliveatgenevamotorshowimg_1.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessencelive.jpg

Strictly a two seater, the front-engined rear wheel drive super-luxury coupe is Infiniti’s first super-performance car with design cues that Infiniti says will distinguish its production cars of the coming years. The Essence is a real styling exercise featuring razor sharp lines, side windows that appear to be resting on a ledge and a steeply raked windscreen that combines as a sun roof and extends all the way to the B pillar while the car rides on 22-inch wheels. The Essence also comes complete with Bespoke Louis Vuitton luggage.

The Concept Car Thread-infiniti_essence_184730_20090304.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessenceconceptfrontwheel1920x1440.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessenceconceptfrontangle1024x768.jpg

The petrol engine and electric engine can work independently or together as a “parallel” hybrid system. At urban speeds the Essence operates as a pure battery electric vehicle. A lower trunk mounted laminated lithium ion battery supplies power to a new type of electric motor called the 3D Motor. The motor is a BLDC design that maximizes torque density to meet tough requirements on size and power output. The result is a particularly slim, disk-shaped motor that has twice the torque of a conventional unit. Its design was achieved by 3D magnetic field analysis to optimize the layout of the electromagnetic coils and permanent magnets. The motor is positioned between the engine and transmission and provides 158bhp (116 Kw). The 3D Motor operates in both propulsion and power regeneration modes to recapture braking energy to keep the battery pack charged up.

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessence25_800x0w.jpg

Optimized energy usage across the widest possible range of driving conditions is guaranteed by two separate clutches which “switch in” the motors as required. It is a system that needs no torque converter and the result is a 600 hp sports car with combined fuel economy of 8 liters / 100 km (30 US MPG).

The Concept Car Thread-infiniti_essence_concept_action_001.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-infinitiessenceconceptfrontandside1920x1440.jpg

The Essence also previews some next-generation collision avoidance safety features. Distance Control Assist (DCA) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems are available in today’s production Infinitis but the Essence adds Side Collision Prevention (SCP) and Back-up Collision Prevention (BCP) to extend the anti-collision shield all the way around the car.

The Concept Car Thread-nissan-acfs.jpg

With SCP, when the driver decides to change lanes, side-mounted sensors activate a warning if an approaching vehicle is detected in the driver’s intended lane. A yaw mechanism is then activated through brake control of individual wheels to help prevent a potential collision. Back-up Collision Prevention works in a similar way, sensing a vehicle behind, giving the driver a warning but then, if the warning is not heeded, activating the brakes automatically.

Renault Ondelios

ONDELIOS: AN ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY LONG-HAUL JOURNEY

The Concept Car Thread-renault_car_ondelios_yatzer_1.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renault_car_ondelios_yatzer_2.jpg

A sleek design that answers the call of the open road

The 4.8-metre-long, 1.6-metre high Ondelios has drawn inspiration from the world of aviation design to deliver high drag efficiency and a Cd of just 0.29. This long-distance voyager boasts sleek, smooth, amazingly fluid lines that make it appear as though it glides over the ground. It embodies Renault's vision of high-end car.

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_3.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_2.jpg

The aluminium-finish grille is flanked by headlamp units that also suggest flowing motion, while its high-performance LED headlights are both longer lasting and more efficient. Another feature of Ondelios' aerodynamic styling is the boomerang-shaped tail lights. They are built into the bodywork and ringed with air extractors to control the flow of air from the wheel arches. The glazed roof further emphasises the vehicle's airy look and feel, bathing the interior in natural light. The steeply raked windscreen, which extends well down the bonnet, further accentuates this ethereal feel.

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_1.jpg

The butterfly-type side doors, which also feature an extensive glazed area, add a further touch of elegance to the car's overall styling. They swing out and upwards as the sills slide down to facilitate ingress.

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondelios.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_7.jpg

The dark blue anthracite of the bodywork blends perfectly with the tinted glazed area, making the car look as if it were all of a piece and a single colour. The tailgate's upper section rounds off the sleek, aerodynamic lines with a profiled glareshield that slides inwards to air and cool the cabin.

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_6.jpg

Ondelios sits on seven-spoke, 23-inch aluminium alloy wheels which contribute to its profiled styling. The propeller-like hubs draw airflow from the sides of the car to prevent turbulence. They operate in conjunction with the rim-side brake discs to ensure they suck in air effectively.

Business-class comfort for a long-haul journey

There are three rows of seats that offer individual seating for six. With their cantilever mounts they give the impression of floating, while their kinematics are redolent of airplane seats. The electrically adjustable backs fold into comfortable, business-class positions, while occupants can deploy and retract their footrests at will. Although their slim lines speak of lightness, they are designed, like giant leaves, to hug their occupants who can curl up in them to enjoy the comfort and support they afford.

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondeliosconcept001.jpg

The ample, flowing yet sober design of the broad dashboard echoes the car's aerodynamic exterior. It is further highlighted by a roomy, suspended stowage compartment which is protected by a lit shell, while all the dashboard's functional components are particularly user-friendly:

- active display skins show driver aid and ride information;
- a monitor at the base of the windscreen displays the different menus and pictures from the
door mirror cameras;
- three large strip displays provide driving-related information, revs and how the hybridized
drivetrain is operating;
- a digital speedometer.

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondeliosconcept10.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondeliosconcept002.jpg

The technologies with which Ondelios is equipped enhance the collective and individual well-being of all occupants. All the passengers, including those in the back row, have their own Samsung interactive portable multimedia devices which they can use for sharing data or multiplayer gaming. Speakers are also incorporated into the headrests and a multizone HVAC system enables each passenger to set the temperature to his or her own liking.

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_5-1.jpg

The smart technologies that have gone into designing Ondelios help drivers to settle in at the wheel, include a Samsung cell phone which also acts as a hands-free door lock recognises the driver and loads all his or her personal settings, e.g. seat-adjustment settings and favourite music. The vehicle adds a final, friendly touch in the form of the back-lit logo which lights up to show that it has recognised the driver.

An environmentally friendly voyager

To complement the extensive work that has gone into Ondelios's aerodynamics, some of the car's structural parts are made from natural flax fibre for greater recyclability. In keeping with the commitment to make the car as light as possible, its body is made from carbon and the glazed areas from polycarbonate.

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_5.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renault_ondelios_4.jpg

Ondelios is powered by a hybrid powerplant which combines a more powerful 205hp (150kW) version of the 2.0 dCi engine, with two 20kW electric motors at the front and rear. They operate in mild hybrid mode, giving the engine extra boost as required. They use a brake and boost system, recovering energy during braking then delivering it to the engine to boost acceleration. The front motor also uses fuel-saving stop-start technology.

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondelios1_header1600x800.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondelios3.jpg

The Concept Car Thread-renaultondelios2_header1600x800.jpg

The electric motor mounted on the rear axle drives the rear wheels when the ESP sensors detect a loss of traction, thus giving Ondelios the capability of a 4WD vehicle. The car is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that can deliver power of up to 4kW/h. With torque of 450Nm between 1,700 and 3800rpm, the diesel engine provides comfort and flexibility at all engine speeds for long-distance driving pleasure. The 2.0 dCi unit takes Ondelios from a standing start to 100kph in just 7.8 seconds. Driving through a seven-speed, double-clutch gearbox, it affords outstanding driving pleasure, while keeping fuel consumption at a frugal 4.5 litres/100km and CO2 emissions at a lowly 120g/km – very impressive for a top-of-the-range vehicle. Similarly, the body, chassis design and hybrid powertrain contribute decisively to protecting the environment.

Peugeot RC HYmotion4

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_02.jpg

The RC HYmotion4 is a concept car of future ideas, bringing together numerous stylistic, engineering and technological ideas in a single vehicle.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_01.jpg

The RC HYmotion4 is an accessible and versatile car, with four doors, four seats and four wheel drive, coupled with a highly innovative electric/petrol hybrid architecture (HYmotion4 technology).

Its aim: a very high level of efficiency both in terms of performance (with its potential 230 kW/313 bhp) and minimal impact on the environment (CO2 emissions of 109 g/km in the combined cycle or Zero in electric mode).

The Concept Car Thread-peugeotrchymotion43_1280x0w.jpg

It is an exciting, eco-efficient vehicle which has all the characteristics that create a real passion for driving. A synthesis of ideas that demonstrates that respect for the environment and driving pleasure can be compatible.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeotrchymotion42_1280x0w.jpg

As, in the great tradition of Peugeot concept cars, this vehicle is an automobile first and foremost. It is a car which is fully in step with the times, but it is technologically ahead of its time. The 1.6 litre THP engine which is fitted at the rear of the vehicle is combined with a 70 kW electric motor under the bonnet.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeotrchymotion41_1280x0w.jpg

The end result is a maximum power of 230 kW (313 bhp), ensuring high levels of driving pleasure, combined with CO2 emissions in the combined cycle of only 109 g/km, or zero in electric only drive mode. Another major innovation made possible by the design is the vehicle's four-wheel drive system, which directly benefits road holding and therefore safety.

Many other new features are available on the vehicle, for example the original design of the suspension and the on-board technology within the passenger compartment, again benefiting both driving comfort and the wellbeing of its four potential occupants.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_15.jpg

Architecture/Engine

Externally, the vehicle's architecture places the driver's seat as far forward as possible, thereby benefiting style, driveability and available space for four potential passengers.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeotrchymotion44_1280x0w.jpg

The vehicle's carbon skin conceals a petrol engine, the 1.6 litre THP, which offers a maximum power of 160 kW (218 bhp).

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_13.jpg

This engine is located transversally in a central position at the rear of the vehicle, allowing sufficient interior space to seat four occupants while at the same time ensuring a large boot capacity. But in addition to this method of propulsion, the vehicle also has another mode of traction.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_12.jpg

Under the bonnet is a 70 kW (95 bhp) electric motor. This is powered by "lithium-ion" batteries and is recharged by an energy recovery system which operates during both deceleration and braking. The batteries are ideally positioned in the central "transmission" tunnel running through the passenger compartment.

On the latter, the driver will also find the gear change control for the electronically-controlled six-speed manual gearbox. With no mechanical connections between the front and the rear power units, the system is controlled entirely and automatically by electronics using "by Wire" technology as used for the fi rst time on the Hoggar, the concept car which appeared in 2003 and was equipped at the time with two HDi FAP diesel engines.

The RC HYmotion4 can thus be driven in different ways:
-- in electric only mode (to start up, in town at low speed and when decelerating),
-- in petrol engine only mode, at constant speeds on the open road or on motorways, when the engine can achieve its optimal efficiency,
-- with both engines combined:
-- During phases of acceleration for extra power ("boost" function), making possible a maximum power of
-- 160+70=230 kW (≈ 313 bhp) and a maximum torque of 178 Nm at the front and 280 Nm at the rear, In four-wheel drive mode, when road conditions warrant it.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_08.jpg

In fact the layout of this electric/petrol hybrid system allows four wheel drive under all circumstances, benefiting safety and driveability.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_07.jpg

This hybrid technology, as well as its special innovative layout, is an important vector of research and development within the PSA Peugeot Citroën group. On Peugeot's stand at the Paris Motor Show this innovative system called "HYmotion", is presented in a number of different formats, featuring different types of engines. The "HYmotion4" technology is represented here in its most extreme version.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_06.jpg

Finally, an additional benefit provided by the vehicle's architecture is the optimal front and rear weight distribution, with minimal weight in both the front and rear overhangs.

Exterior style

Every square millimetre of the bodywork has been carefully studied and modelled to give the concept a dynamic and appealing profile. This profile reinvents Peugeot's inherent codes while going still further in the search for overall balance and modern, flowing contours.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_05.jpg

The sense of motion begins at the very front of the vehicle, where the Lion badge is framed by air intakes that give indications of the car's excellent aerodynamic efficiency.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_04.jpg

This expressive character is enhanced by the headlamps, designed with Peugeot's stylistic genes in mind, but made even more attractive here by the use of LED technology. These headlamps are the starting point of a waist line which lends structure to the car's overall dynamic and fl owing profile, supporting the plunging window line and highlighting the muscular design of the wings. These lateral contours then come together at the rear to draw out a shape suggestive of the powerful claws of a lion.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_09.jpg

The rear lights are contained within this area and also make a passing reference to the manufacturer's long history, the 504 coupé and cabriolet from 1969, the 307 CC, and now the 308 CC.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_10.jpg

From a higher perspective, we discover more original characteristics, such as the double glass roof, crossed by lines originating on the bonnet which merge into the Naca unit at the rear of the roof and end finally in an embossed area on the boot encircling the rear logo.

The interior

As for the bodywork, an original ambience reigns in the interior of the RC HYmotion4. The passenger compartment succeeds in evoking the world of sport and ultra-modernity, thanks to the finish of particular details and its contrasting play of light and shadow.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeotrchymotion4interior1lg.jpg

The high quality materials of the passenger compartment (leather, aluminium, chrome, carbon) and the four low-slung seats create an ambience that will delight the senses of smell and touch of motor car purists everywhere.

The very "aeronautical" design of the fascia panel helps give the interior space a modern feel, with a fi nish consisting of two horizontal sections. Between the latter, numerous items of equipment are housed on a uniform black-lacquered background: digital displays in front of the driver (for instrumentation and visual feedback from the rear view cameras) and in front of the passenger (for leisure activities). In the centre there is a large touch screen controlling the audio functions of the Triangle® hi-fi system, the satellite navigation, the air conditioning and the car's various settings.

The Concept Car Thread-2008peugeotrchymotion4conceptdashboard1280x960.jpg

In another original stylistic feature, the central "transmission" tunnel continues onto the roof, in the manner of a "scorpion's tail", making a passing reference to the RC and concept cars.

This feature can be back-lit, as can the digital readouts on the fascia panel, to create an original ambience which can be personalised according to the mood of the driver.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeotrchymotion4tableaudebord.jpg

Structure and suspension

Weight is a key factor in the dynamic and environmental efficiency of any vehicle. The RC HYmotion4 has therefore been designed to optimise this parameter. Its structure thus comprises a "space-frame" type aluminium body ensuring overall lightness and rigidity, to which are fi tted the mechanical assemblies and the suspension. Similarly, all bodywork components are manufactured from composite materials.

The Concept Car Thread-peugeot_rc_hymotion4_14.jpg

The suspension, a field in which Peugeot has acknowledged expertise, consists of double aluminium wishbones at the front and at the rear. The system uses a particularly innovative technology known as "kineticTM H2 CES".

This system, developed by the company TENNECO, allows a very high level of road holding with no adverse effect on comfort. The principle is to control body roll and damping functions by means of a hydraulic link between the right and left-hand shock absorbers. This system, which avoids the need for an anti-roll bar, ensures the car remains fl at when cornering while at the same time providing excellent vibration filtration.
