If the new gen Jetta costs less to build, is more fuel efficient, and has more space, in which way are owners going to be shortchanged? With this logic, we should all wait till everyone in the country has bought one, so that we can all start from the same point!
It's been almost 24 months since the Jetta was launched ( July 2008). What decent time-span is required?

Well at the same time, lots of potential buyers will not buy the old one in anticipation of the new one ! :Frustrati
I feel VW will wait for the New Civic, Corolla Diesel before they launch this one. Having said that, they have been pretty pro-active with the Polo and the Vento (due here in a couple of months), we may be surprised.

Since VW owns part of Maruti, they will probably learn some nice tricks from them like selling 5 generations of Jetta simultaneously, or bringing the current new Jetta to India after it has been phased out abroad and the used dies can be salvaged cheaply.
Hope they act like a true global company like Toyota (Qualis>Innova) and Honda (OHC>NHC>ANHC) and replace models in a timely fashion

"Here are the first images of the all new Volkswagen Jetta saloon. VW has re-engineered its Jetta saloon and the new model takes a gigantic leap forward – conceptually and in the style department.
The new car model has undergone considerable amount of changes and according to VW, it now warrants status as a standalone model like the VW Tiguan. The saloon’s styling is based on the lines of the NCC coupe concept car that was shown at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.Still based on the Golf platform, the Jetta sits on a wheelbase stretched by 70mm and is clothed in crisp new sheetmetal inspired by the NCC concept revealed in January. At 4644mm, the new Jetta is 90mm longer than before. In Europe, the new Jetta will be launched with a wide range of engine options. However, in India, the saloon is more likely to be offered with a 1.4 TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel engine options. The new longer and wider Jetta is has VW’s ‘design DNA’ helping it sharpen the car’s styling. At the front, the prominence of horizontal lines defines the design. The black radiator grille combines with the car’s trapezoidal headlights to form a styling unit. It also gets an added cooling air intake and a tray-shaped front spoiler that gives the car a sporty finish.rom the sides, you can notice that the styling characteristics that mark all new VWs launched in the past one year gets moulded into yet another interpretation of the ‘design DNA’. For me the big attraction is the 1.4 TFSI engine. Its great machine and will give sleepless nights to Honda and Toyota, makers of Civic and Corolla Altis.
It costs just Rs 8 lakhs in USA. Should come soon. Looks like a bigger Polo from the front and an Audi A4 from the rear.
It looks like a Bigger Polo from the front, though a better overall design. The Jetta has been the most over-rated & over-priced car in India; whereas it is just an economic car back in US... The current Jetta engine performance (both petrol & Diesel) is the worst in its category in Indian market, and in sheer engine performance it falls behind cars half its price (viz. SX4, Fiesta, Verna). And VW was never a real 'premium' car brand (it's the original people's car), but just that it owns many premium brands now. They could grow to become the largest car manufacturer, not by selling their so called "premium" badge, but the sheer quality they brought into economy cars. However, in India, they are trying to misguide the Indian consumers into believing that they are a "Premium" car, and worse, they sell their cars at 50-75% more the price for lesser features/toned down engines in India, compared to their same models in the West.

With you James on this. I don't recall Jetta being considered anything worthwhile in the US. Passat got some market respect but Jettas where looked down as problematic cars. But this impression is old. I don't know if it has changed now.
Nonetheless, new Jetta looks awesome with Audi influence showing.

Yup +1 to that, it looks pretty good but similar to Polo. I too fail to understand the low price of the same car in US and more in India

Front is uninspiring. Side and back looks good.
The price difference between India and US is not brand specific but across the board. Blame it on taxes. Merc C class starts in US at around $32k! Here in dollar terms it is over $50k. One can buy 400 bhp machines in US and for the same amount may not be able to get even half the horses in India.

Gives me a deja-vu all over again. Based on my experience with our Skoda Octavia, I feel that Skodas are built to
feel like tanks, they are not actually built like tanks at all. So the parts are all heavy and thick, but they are heavily prone to fail (we have replaced god knows how many major+minor parts in our family car over the last few years). I know Skoda's *** issues are well publicised here, but I wonder if my opinion on the cars themselves would be agreed by people.
Anyhow, JD Power is a fairly reliable source, so if they say VW cars are not reliable then I personally think its just the Skoda story redux.

My experience with Mercedes has not been any different. You will find
this thread interesting. The Polo's recently reported problems have me very concerned.

The EU version has broken cover. As expected, it is higher up in terms of spec compared to the de-contented USA version.
This sounds more like it.
The only fly in the ointment is the fact that the availability of two variants ( and one continued to being made in Mexico for international markets) probably leaves VW with a very good reason to bring the US version to India.

The clocks are definitely more in keeping with the current version, and the absence of the peculiar (law mandated) orange turn indicators do a lot to prevent this looking like an 80's throwback.
Praying that we get EU spec here!

Absolutely. While I love the looks of the Polo / Vento, taking this styling to the Jetta and Passat will make the entire VW family look, well, like a family. Boring in that case.
