Audi A1 Prototype Caught for First Time

Spies have caught the first images of the Audi A1 prototype being taken around the block. BMW-style black & white psychedelic camo cannot do enough to hide the Audi front grille. Just from these pictures it appears the car will have a longer wheelbase than its chief rivals. An Audi executive was recently quoted as saying several body variants were possible. Clearly this is a 3-door but a 5-door, a Cabriolet and a possible coupe/ roadster can be expected. Even an SUV cannot be discounted.
Engines would include a 1.8-litre TSI, some diesel units as well as hybrid or full-on electric. Drive would be placed mainly on the front wheels but a possible S1 might take a leaf from bigger S cars and use quattro AWD.
Audi is not yet at a stage where customers in the US are prepared to part with premium cash for an ultra-compact model. Therefore the A1 will not be launched for this market, not until such time as public attitudes at least improve.
Whether the A1 eventually looks more like the Metroproject Concept remains to be seen.

Why do Audi camouflage their cars at all while testing? Anyone can make out the make & possibly the model too. Better camouflaging is required.

+1 Jaya. They need to use better camoflauging. The head lamps, rear lamps, front grille are a clean pointers (towards audi). Car design looks good .

Usual stuff that happens when new models are being tested. They roll over parts from a fair number of existing models, and tweak things a tad bit.
I'd like to see this one without the camo. The line up doesn't seem too inviting at this point.

After bringing the Audi A1 to the market later this year, Audi will offer a high-performance S1 version of the hatchback that will compete with the likes of the MINI John Cooper Works and the upcoming Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA.

Power will come from a 1.4L TFSI supercharged and turbocharged engine making a total of 200-hp. It will also carry a quattro all-wheel-drove chassis. 0 to 60 mph is expected to come in at 6 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

The Audi S1 will also receive some cosmetic changes to set it apart from the A1 including flared arches, 19-inch alloy wheels , roof-mounted spoiler, an aggressive front end with a low front splitter, deep air intakes and daytime LED running lights.

The smallest and most affordable Audi since the demise of the A2 in 2007 is based on VW’s PQ25 platform — as used in the VW Polo, Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia.

Also under development in Ingolstadt, but not due until 2012, is an A1 cabriolet with a fabric roof. The car will be launched with four-cylinder petrol engines: an entry-level 85bhp 1.2 and a 122bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre unit. They will be joined by three diesels: a 74bhp 1.2 three-pot and Audi’s new 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit in 89bhp and 104bhp guises. A 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel is also under consideration, although it isn’t likely to form part of the initial line-up.

It would be nice to see the Audi A1 in India, but I highly doubt it. VAG would probably be content with the presence of the Polo and the Fabia in our market. They would prefer to keep Audi 'up there' as a premium player in the market!

P.S. Yet another nice scoop Sid!

Audi A1: An all-around successful design

PRESS RELEASE

Audi A1: An all-around successful design
  • New design: The shoulder line appears to clasp the A1
  • The color-contrasted roof arch is an important distinguishing feature
Ingolstadt, January 18, 2010 - The new Audi A1 is dedicated to emotional design, as two details on the body make abundantly clear. First, the shoulder line, also known as the tornado line, has been very subtly redesigned so that for the first time it
encompasses the entire car. Second, the new color-contrasted roof arch gives the silhouette of the A1 an entirely new shape and is simultaneously a distinctive detail for customizing the car.

This is new: For the first time ever, the shoulder line wraps completely around an Audi model like a clasp. It begins up front with the single-frame grille, extends over the front lights and the side to the tail lights and the rear hatch. "The shoulder line is the most important design element of the A1. The clear separation between the front, side, and rear has been eliminated to produce a holistic sculpture," says Jürgen Löffler, exterior designer of the Audi A1.

Spied: Audi A1 and S1-032011audia1teaser.jpg

"This detail is best explained with reference to a track and field athlete. The more muscular and broader the shoulders of a 100-meter sprinter, the more solid his or her starting position. The broad shoulders of the A1 likewise give it a powerful road stance." Another important design characteristic for the silhouette of the A1 is the color-contrasted roof arch, which begins in the A-pillar, runs above the side windows and ends at the rear of the car. "The contrasting roof arch traces the roofline of the A1 when viewed from the side. This is something new that we are doing here for the A1," saysLöffler.

"The windshield is a bit more upright; the rear window, on the other hand, is more inclined and flowing, giving the car a very sporty and dynamic appearance." The contrasting roof line is an important feature for customizing the A1. Customers will be able to order the roof arch in a variety of colors, regardless of the body color of the car.

A video about A1.

Source : Audi A1 Body Design Teaser [Video]

Article :
Quote:
When an automaker releases a teaser like this, you can bet it will be light on details and laden with vague, inspired language.

But here we have an A1 designer himself, Jürgen Löffler, talking about the styling signatures of the new model.

Although we do get a look at an A1 model sitting on the design table, more importantly, we get a description of what will be a distinguishing design feature of the new A1. That is, it's shoulder line.

And this is how Audi explains it in the press release:

"...the shoulder line wraps completely around an Audi model like a clasp. It begins up front with the single-frame grille, extends over the front lights and the side to the tail lights and the rear hatch."

Löffler likens the look of the A1 to a sprinter's starting stance.

"This detail is best explained with reference to a track and field athlete. The more muscular and broader the shoulders of a 100-meter sprinter, the more solid his or her starting position," says Löffler, the man who designed the exterior of the A1.

Another design feature will be the color-contrasted roof arch which runs from the A-pillar to the top end corner of the car. Customers will be able to order it in different colors. Also, the windscreen on the A1 is more upright than on most Audi models, while the rear window comes with a distinct slant.

Engines expected to power the new compact include, on the petrol/gasoline side, a 1.2 liter with 86 hp, a 122 hp 1.4 liter, and a turbo 1.4 liter with 170 hp. Diesel offerings are likely also taken from VW's stable of powerplants, such as the 1.6 liter with 90 hp and the 2.0 liter TDI with 140 hp.

The A1 is scheduled to make its debut at the Geneva auto show in March. It is expected to go on sale later in the year.

Many more A1 teaser are expected in the coming days/weeks.

Audi S1 - Close to Production

Audi S1 Test Mule Looks Like Closest-to-Production Yet.

Speculated S1 will be with a 2.-liter TFSI engine with 220 PS and 350 Nm of torque. This is the same output as the you get with the Audi A4,

The camouflage, including a film on the headlights and taillights, suggests this car is a full preproduction unit..

It can be assumed that the first round of this new age of Audi S1 automobiles will reflect the upcoming scheduled facelift of the A1 on which it’s based

The biggest telltale cue is the aforementioned cladding. with this S-car suggestive exhaust, but otherwise not very different from sport-spec A1s on sale at European dealerships.

S1 seem to turn up early next year at a major auto show. Geneva ?

Iis the new S1 Quattro, we now have what is claimed to be the first official photo of the car. If you must ask, it does look to be the real thing, but we'll know for sure on Wednesday.
Expected to come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four delivering around 220- to 230-horsepower, and offered with either a standard six-speed manual or a dual-clutch S-tronic automatic transmission, both driving all-four wheels.
