Toyota Motor stayed at the top in global vehicle sales in 2014, selling 10.23 million vehicles, beating Volkswagen and General Motors.

Volkswagen AG of Germany sold 10.14 million vehicles in 2014 while the Detroit-based General Motors was third at 9.92 million vehicles, a company record .

Volkswagen (VW) eclipsed Toyota as the world's top-selling carmaker in the first quarter as the Japanese rival grappled with a series of production stoppages.

Toyota's worldwide sales declined 2.3 percent in the January-March period to 2.46 million cars. VW, struggling to overcome an emissions scandal, reported earlier this month a 0.8 percent increase to 2.51 million vehicles in group deliveries.

General Motors' quarterly deliveries also dropped, 2.5 percent to 2.36 million cars due to a slump in Latin America.

What scandal? No matter, Volkswagen World's Largest Automaker In First 6 Months Of 2016.

At halftime 2016, Volkswagen AG, scandal-rocked as it may be, still leads Toyota in the race for World’s Largest Automaker. With all three global giants having reported its global deliveries, Volkswagen is some 80,000 units ahead of Toyota. General Motors is 360,000 units behind Volkswagen, and it definitely has long ceased being a factor in the race for the top spot.

However, Toyota typically speeds up its global deliveries in the second half of the year, would VW retain its lead and become the world largest auto Manufacturer of 2016?

The Volkswagen Group outsold General Motors in July as well as in the first seven months of the year to reclaim its position as China's largest
automaker.
In the first seven months, the VW Group's China sales totaled 2,148,000 vehicles, a gain of 8 percent from the same period last year.

VW Group delivered 285,900 vehicles in China last month, an increase of 16 percent from a year earlier.
In July, General Motors delivered 270,529 vehicles in China. Through July, its China sales reached 2,081,005 vehicles.

In July, Skoda volume advanced 16 percent year on year to 21,400 vehicles while Audi deliveries rose 9.9 percent to 45,454 vehicles.The company didn't disclose sales for the Porsche brand in China last month.

VW to top Toyota in global car sales in 2016.

Toyota was number-one for the 4 years to 2015.

Officials with the German carmaker say the group sold more than 10.3 million vehicles in 2016. That's up nearly 4 percent from the previous year, when sales dropped on revelations the company was cheating on emissions tests.

Toyota officials estimate they sold about 10.1 million vehicles during the year.

Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi Alliance dethrones VW as World’s largest automaker.

Enter Mitsubishi Motors, which became a part of Renault-Nissan following an acquisition completed toward the end of 2016. The period from January to June 2017 made it clear that the alliance was right to welcome Mitsubishi to its ranks. The three managed to sell 5,268,078 vehicles in the first half of 2017, thus dethroning Volkswagen (5,155,600) and Toyota (5,129,000). On fourth place, General Motors sold roughly 4.7 million vehicles in the period.

VW Expected To Retain Title As Best-Selling Automaker For 2017!

VW Group 2017 sales rose to 10.7M cars, beating Toyota.

Toyota said last month it expected to sell 10.35 million cars worldwide in 2017 across its Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu and Hino brands, up 2 percent from 2016, and 10.5 million this year.

Renault-Nissan tops VW Group to become top-selling automaker - 2017

The Renault-Nissan alliance has emerged as the world's biggest seller of light vehicles in 2017, bumping Volkswagen Group from the top spot, after the inclusion of Mitsubishi Motors' sales boosted its final tally.

Nissan Motor's sales hit a record high of 5.82 million, while French automaker Renault has reported sales of 3.76 million. Mitsubishi's sales came in at 1.03 million, bringing total 2017 sales for the group to about 10.61 million light vehicles.

Together, the three automakers beat record sales of about 10.53 million light vehicles at VW Group, 2016's top seller, which also includes the Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche brands.

Toyota Motor, which held the No. 2 spot in 2016, posted group sales of 10.2 million units last year, excluding its Hino Motors heavy trucks
