Hi All,

I have moved to Muscat recently and plan to buy a car( would have preferred a diesel torque beast but Middle east sell only Petrols). My budget is 20000 Rials( INR 24 lakhs).

My preference would be;
Great Pick up , Handling, high revving engine and comfort. I have shortlisted the JAG 3.0 XF and the BMW 523i ( 525 and 530 are out of reach ).I can also look at Audi A5/A6 and Merc C200 and E300. I will sell the car in 2 years( Jag gives me a buy-back @65% after 2 yrs).

Here are the stats of the cars;

BMW 523i 3 lt 8A, 204 bhp 270Nm Torque 0-100 8.3 seconds
JAG 3.0 6A 238 Bhp 293Nm Torque 0-100 8.2 seconds

Both cars have a top speed of 250km. The Jag cost me 16k Rials(INR18L) and BMW 523i 19K rials( INR 23L)

Please let me know what do you guys feel about the above cars.

Wow!! Incredible pricing in muscat!!! Is that new or used?
I've driven the XF & i love it, but would be intresting to see how much better the new 523i is with the 8 speed auto? @ 16K the XF seems to be a better deal, but what would be the resale of 523i after 2years.

Personally i would chose a Mercedes. No matter what I drive I will want to end up driving a Mercedes.

Between the given choices, the Jag looks far better VFM.

In muscat the snob value for Jag may be higher than BMW. In india i would blindly get the BMW . Its again high in my ladder along with Audi. But the mercedes is in the top most rung.

I don't know much about both the cars listed above, but from a pure financial point of view the Jag makes more sence, added to the the power on paper looks higher than the BMW, is a tad quicker too.

Well am more of a Beemer fan than the Jag but since the performance is more or less identical in this case and Jaguar are offering a buy back @ 65% it makes more sense IMO.
Besides, the Jag's interiors are a lot more luxurious and do give out an over all better ambiance than the BMW's whose interiors are more functional than pleasing to the eyes.
Both would be good vehicles with the Jaguar seeming to be the more practical buy.

The new 5 series is quite a car. And the 8 speed gearbox is plain fantastic. Also the car is a little bigger than the jag. And at times you may even feel like you are driving a 7. Bmws are very driver oriented cars but with the new 5 bmw has thrown a googly and the comfort, ride and space in the new 5 is really good. Its still a great car to drive, but not as good as the outgoing 5. But overall a better overall package now.

The jag is a great choice too. And you are getting a great buy back offer. Btw how long do you plan to keep the car? The legroom in the jag is better than the beemer, but headroom could have been better and taller people at the back would not appreciate it. A few touches like the feather touch glovebox and lights really add that special touch to the jag. Also it has a touch screen system which is nifty too.

Summing it up though
i would stick to the beemer.

If you have to do a pick from the German trio, I will say go for the BMW.
But Jag XF is quite a bit of a car, and have awesome looks, and in comparison with the F10 5-series, and that will be my recommendation.
That said, if backseat comfort is also a priority, the 5-series should be a better choice. The new 5 have a much improved ride quality and back seat comfort.

Sorry to disappoint, but both the cars are New!! Yes the JG is 17-18 L INR. I think you guys are also finding it tough to choose one clearly. Please pour in your suggestions.

From what perspective did you find the BMW bigger ?
I love BMWs but the XF is xxL in size even by this segment standards.

Wow 18lakhs is unbelievable, cheaper than a humble luxury honda accord in india. Like the jag and the sticker price is just to good to be true. But would still stick with the 5.

Sorry got my specs a little mixed up. Its actually the wheelbase of the 5 which is longer. Which gives the 5 better space upfront, but still its the jag that has more legroom in the rear. Headroom wise the 5 still has the edge. But you are right the jag is bigger, no actually a lot bigger on the outside. My bad.

I felt the opposite, I drove both Jaguar XF and BMW 5s back to back last month, apart from the pop out gear selector, lightning and AC vents which swivel open in the Jag i did find the Interiors in the BMW to be of better quality and more suited to a car of this segment.

The Jag surely looks more exclusive and expensive but it is not a match to BMW when it comes to overall spaciousness, Ride, Handling etc

Was there a merc e for company too? I agree with you i find the bmw interiors to be of better quality as well as better suited to the class / segment its competing in. I guess if you buy the jag you wont need to get another sports car. Its definately going to grab a lot of attention.
