The SLS AMG roadster spied in the flesh! Slated to be launched by late 2011, the roadster will be using the new 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The new unit, which debuted in the S63 AMG sedan, develops up to 571 hp and 900Nm of torque. By comparison, the current naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 develops the same 571 hp rating but ‘only’ 650Nm of torque.

This is great news indeed. But IMO the roadster will lack the essence of the SLS Coupe and its trademark Gullwing doors. For roadster lovers the SL63 and the SL65 AMG is already in the market and although the SLS roadster may be an amazing car in its own right, Merc would have sticked to the Gullwing Coupe with its mad mad doors.

Just my 2 cents.

And for people like Jeremy Clarkson, they better have a roadster

Looks neat. Now only if this roadster had scissor doors,if not those Gullwing doors, it would make it one mean machine. Dying to see this on the streets of India soon!

From the looks of it alone, it seems it has neither. Regular doors this time.

Mercedes-Benz has pulled the wraps off its latest supercar, the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. Gone are the gullwing doors and fixed roof; in their place are traditional entry-ports and a folding cloth softtop. The car is still undergoing testing.

I seriously ain't a fan of the SLS Roadster. The door handle looks gaudy and out of place on the SLS. Something like the upward-swinging door of the McMerc Roadster would have been highly appreciated. Displeased!

Mercedwes Benz has officially unveiled the SLS AMG Roadster. Chopping the roof, fitting conventional doors, and stiffening the body as required results in a convertible that only weighs 88 lbs more than the coupe. The roof-available in black, red or beige-can be dropped or raised in just eleven seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.

Top speed is electronically limited in either position to 197 mph, while officially quoted acceleration times, for some reason, drop from 3.8 seconds in the gullwing coupe to 3.7 in the Roadster. Along with the convertible roof, Mercedes has also packed in a new electronically-controlled Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension, AMG Performance Media system to track and display vehicle telemetrics, and an AMG Drive Unit to control it all.

I know the gullwing doors are not a possibility with a convertible. But they will be deeply missed. I wish MB had atleast done some special tricks to the roadsters doors too rather than leave it so plain-jane.
Perhaps the flip up doors like the lambos would be nicer

Exactly my point. No need to look at the Italians for inspiration, they knew exactly what to do and didn't do it.
