Quite an unlucky run for Hero Motorsports in the Dakar. Last year they lost Paulo Goncalves.

CS Santosh in induced coma after crash at Dakar 2021

Indian off-road and enduro motorcycle racer CS Santosh crashed in Stage 4 of the 2021 Dakar Rally. Now, according to a media report, the 37-year old biker has been put in an induced coma.

Santosh suffered an impact to his head, but was reported conscious and stable when the medics arrived at the scene. He was then transported to Riyadh for further investigation. It is reported that due to the impact on his helmet, he has a minor clot in the head. He is kept under observation for 24 hours.

Santosh started the Dakar Rally with a 43rd place finish in Stage 1. He had made good progress before the start of the Stage 4 and was placed 34th overall in the standings. CS Santosh races for the Hero MotorSports team.

The Dakar Rally has been conducted since 1979 and is an off-road endurance event. The conditions are much more difficult than other off-road rallies. The 2021 edition is being held in Saudi Arabia.

Even though I don't follow the Dakar rally, I diligently follow other motorsports especially Formula 1. Each time I watch the races, it scares me to think about what could happen if one of them crashes at the speeds they do.

Also a huge shoutout to Husqvarna's Paul Spierings for resuscitating CS Santosh. Wishing him a speedy recovery!

Update on CS Santosh recovery.

No major physical injuries apart from dislocated right shoulder & head trauma. Medical team have kept him in an induced coma to reduce body functions to a minimum. Scans show no major issue that could impact full recovery.

What is it about Dakar and head injuries? Isn't the race run in a desert? A mere coincidence or am I missing something?

Lots of extremely tricky rocky sections with huge boulders as well. Its not just sand all the time..lots of trails too.

I have been an avid fan of CS Santosh from a long time, right from his motocross days. Was glued to his exploits in all the dakars he participated. Checked out the progress in 2021 Dakar through Hero Motosports' official page. Was very sad and shocked to know that he had a serious crash. Relieved to know that he was resuscitated with the timely intervention of a participant and the medical team.
A few days back got an update that he is stable but still in an induced coma. But there has not been much of an update from 2 days. It will be great if anyone can give an update on his current health condition.Praying that he gets out of all this soon! Get well soon champ.

C S Santosh was transferred by Air Ambulance from Riyadh to Bengaluru on Thursday without any issues. As per the latest information, he has been brought out of the induced coma successfully. He is now receiving the next stage of treatment & continues to be in CCU for observation.

“Actually, the first goal is to be normal, which I’m achieving now and then the next goal is to come back in terms of my sport because that gave me my identity. I am who I am because of what I do, so I want to go back to doing what I do.”

Finally some update! Thank you. Glad to know that the champ has been recovering well and getting strong. Its so tough recovering from this kind of trauma. Takes a lot of will power and determination. A video documentary on CS Santosh's road to recovery post his horrific accident. Most of us did not have the extent of his injuries both physical and psychological ones. I am happy that he is in a better shape now and wishing he gets closer to the Santosh we all knew before his accident and race once again.
