Congratulations, your Toyota Etios thread is very informative for other Etios owners. it also gives comfort to members who are still holding older Etios cars. You have also maintained your car in mint condition.

Update is, there is actually nothing to update!
Car is running absolutely fine & the 'fill it, shut it, forget it' saga continues.

Had few late-night fun runs recently and I was all grinning. :D

Did a short 400 km drive to Santiniketan with few Bhpians. Bhpian Sayata took his Ecosport TDCI and both the cars had fun together.

One car which we miss even after 3 years of selling it is the Etios. The saddest part is that I keep getting reminded about its comfort every time I take an airport taxi in Bangalore and when I visit my parents ( they own a liva which is 9 years old ). The suspensions ( especially the new version after the thud sound fixing ) is such a joy on most type of Indian roads.

My wife and me both agree that the ride comfort of a sedan like Etios can never be matched by any of the MPVs/ SUVs out there. It's a combination of several facts - well controlled body roll and at the same time, the jerk of the bad roads are absorbed as well. At the same time the suspension lasts really long inspite of all the abuse we throw at it in India. Our 2nd car will most probably be another sedan from Toyota. MPV/SUV does have its benefits. But the ride comfort of a sedan is unmatched by any other form factor of a car. :)

The spare wheel retaining screw of my 2016 Etios has broken the second time. I fixed it with Araldite but it didn't last at all.

Any DIY fixes?

In place of the plastic crown, I am thinking of welding a metal plate with a butterfly grip to turn it.

Is a Yaris on the way?

Even I tried with Araldite, but it came off again.

I reported this to Toyota, they told me, if I order one, they will get a new one for me. I have also told my FNG mechanic, if he can manage one from a scrap dealer or anywhere.
Currently the spare wheel in my car is placed without this. I feel a bit irritated while going over bad roads or humps.
If you get one welded, please share the pic with us. I can consider that option as well.

May be place a thin sheet of foam (the sort used for packaging) underneath the spare to reduce the rattling.

Find out what is the size of the bolt. Looks like an M8 to me. Get an SS or zinc plated fully threaded bolt of the same size from the local market, drill a hole through the plastic cap, insert the bolt through the cap, use an M8 hex nut to secure the bolt to the cap firmly from the other side and use it. Jugaad but works without issues.

Araldite won’t work since you apply a lot of force on the cap while using the spare wheel and the bolt holds on to the other end. The epoxy part would give away.

I did something similar.
Drilled a hole in the plastic cover. Inserted the bolt and placed a nut on the other side to prevent excessive play.
I now use a number 12 spanner to tighten/loosen it.

I tried sitting in Yaris multiple times and felt it to be claustrophobic probably due to the slanting sides. Etios felt very roomy and spacious in comparison.

I have been following the Camry for some time now. Will wait for it to come in a plugin hybrid avatar ( if at all it comes ). And hopefully by that time, will have enough $$$ as well. :D

Odo stands at 102,400 km

Last Sunday my friend's Indigo CS broke down and it had to be towed. My Etios was to the rescue.



But unfortunately in a minor goof-up, the Indigo hit the rear bumper of my Etios.

The bumper was unscratched, but the boot-lid of my car got misaligned.



Took it to Saini Toyota and got the boot-lid realigned. Total cost Rs 470.
Work done was neat.

To Samba and other Etios owners,

Is there a possibility to remap the Etios Diesel? I suppose the difference between Etios and Altis diesel is the bigger variable geometry turbo in Altis. Can that be fitted in Etios to make it more powerful? Cousin owns one which is almost 3.5 years old now with 48K KMs on the Odometer. Pretty happy overall however, feels the car screams a lot when revved and loses out power very soon. Great to cruise comfortably however not so fun to drive. May be a remap, bigger turbo and better filter help?

Did a 400 km highway run this week.
Nothing major to update. All is good.

Few parts which will need attention in the next service in May end/June are-
Front Brake pads.
Brake rotor.
Rear brake shoe.
Front shock absorbers. There is no leak, but my gut feeling is, they have gone weak.

Am not sure, have not heard of anyone remapping a diesel Etios. You can check with the tuners like Tuneotronics or Code6 or similar, if they have a map for Etios diesel.

I will suggest you, it's better to upgrade to a more powerful car like Verna, Vento/Rapid or similar.

Etios turns 10 with 104,000 km of memories.



A decade with the Etios (one of the most underrated cars) has been fabulous.

Here in West Bengal the road tax is for 5 years. So on the 10th year, paid the road tax of Rs 37,055 for the next 5 years. Got the insurance (comprehensive from Tata AIG) renewed. It was roughly Rs 5,300.

The 10th year service is due. Along with the yearly service, there might be some additional work like- the front brake pads, brake rotors, the rear brake shoe & the front shock absorbers may need replacement. Though there is no leak from the shock-absorbers, but I can feel the lack of stiffness. This service may cost around Rs 20-25k.

By spending around 60-65k, the Etios should be good to go for the next few years. The clutch, battery & tyres are already new.
A new fun to drive car which will match the comfort, space & reliability of the Etios (Rapid, City, Yaris, Ciaz, Verna) will now cost me north of 10 lacs. So spending this money on my 10-year-old car won't even bother me. Am happy to spend this amount.
