I'm curious why a car can't be driven without a working compressor fan. If your AC is off, the compressor fan isn't even needed right? Was it because you didn't want to take a risk, or the electronic nannies wouldn't let you?

True. You can drive short distances without AC which is what I was doing. I was advised against doing long drives (possibly due to the electronic nannies )and hence didn't risk it. I had my wife's and father's cars for the longer trips.
