Getz Prime 1.1 GLE: 1000 KM Review

About four months back I started hunting for my first car.
After much deliberation i settled for the Getz prime GLE.The car has been with me for almost 2 months now
I am no expert but trying to put my two pence together.

Lets try to see how the car fairs on some important parameters in no specific order (My take )

The Looks

I am sure most would agree with me when I say that the looks of a car is one of the most important criteria’s in selecting a car. For me the Getz has the looks and probably the most sexy behinds among mid priced hatches available in India (leave the SRV).

The Space

The Getz has loads of space both in the front and at the back.
There is ample boot space available for those long trips.

Gear Box

Gear shifting is an absolute dream (much has been said about this in the forum).

Driving Pleasure

This is where the car becomes a mixed bag.

Scenario 1: AC OFF

The car is easy to maneuver and does a good job in Bangalore traffic.
Car seems adequately powered though frequent gear changing is required.

Scenario 2: AC ON

Now we start to have problems.
This is now a completely different car, it is lethargic and the power drop is so severe that one can sometimes go crazy.
Even in first gear the car refuses to chug along. Hectic gear shifting is required to maneuver through Bangalore traffic.

Steering

Steering is effortless making the car quite easy and effortless to drive.
The car comes with a tilt steering column giving you the flexibility to adjust as per your comfort.

AC

Nothing to write home about. Its the same capacity as the santro and given the bigger size of Getz struggles to cool.

Cabin Noise

The car is very silent almost '0' cabin noise.

Fuel Efficiency

Till date the car is returning ~11.5 KMPL in city with 50% AC and ~16 on Highway with 80% AC.
These figures were take before the first servicing.

Ground Clearance

Spot of bother as it is approx 166mm, though I have never faced any problems.

Build Quality

The car is quite well built.
Hyundai has done a good job with the interiors as well, the seats are comfortable and there are lots of handy compartments here and there to keep your stuff.

The one thing I like most about the car

The instrument panel. it looks killer and is very practical (Design, placement).

The one thing I absolutely hate about the car

The footwear. 155/80.R13 doesn’t do justice to the size of the car.

There you go I have summed up my car.I hope this would be useful for someone considering a new buy.

Cheers

Pardon my ignorance, but is it a 1.1 ?
If yes, then yes its bound to be underpowered, because the Santro's engine has to carry that extra weight of the Getz.

I think its a better choice for Bangalore, we dont get to utilise the full power of the bigger engine, so it makes sense to get extra miles/litre!

How much is the difference in weight between the Santro and Getz?

Yes it has the 1.1 lt engine.

@Gopz: Bingo exactly my thoughts , the car is suited for Bangy.
The getz is 995 kg , no idea about the santro though.

The fuel efficiency is less for a 1.1 engine. My car,1.3, gave 11 kmpl even after driving her at 140 kmph in GQ at the Yelagiri Team-bhp meet

I am not sure about the 1.3 but the claimed mileage (as per the dealer) for 1.1 is around 13 in city and 16 on Highway.

I must say 11 on highway sounds quite less.

Good review. The only grouse i have against the car is that its underpowered to a fault. 1.6 will cure that but leave a hole in your pocket. why cant we have the best of both worlds?

Hey, Is it as bad as an 800 / alto with their ACs on? You seem to give an impression that it is almost impractical to drive the car with the AC on. Is it so bad?

in santro when AC is on you can feel the power drop... here on the top extra weight of the Getz

here is the answer
The question is if it is impractical to drive. As for the Santro it is almost unnoticeable when you switch ON the AC and is not as bad as an 800 or an Alto which feel like an elephant just hitched a ride on your car when you hit the AC switch.
Hyundai was supposed to have remapped the engine and the cogs to make the Getz a bit driveable with the smaller heart. I was just wondering aloud that whether it gets as bad as an 800 with an AC on(as in woefully unmanageable) or is it still manageable drive with the AC on?

GETZ 1.1 is woefully underpowered. even 1.3L engine if fully loaded would face some challenge for the size of GETZ.

I have used the car mostly within Bangalore where you barely get to cross 50 on the speedo hence I am not complaining.
Without the AC the car does not give much of an impression of being on the slower side. However, there is considerable performance drop when the AC is swithed ON.
Having said that I still maintain its quite a practical car specially for a city like Bangy.

I have taken the car on the Bangalore- Mysore highway once and was not let down by the car, the heavy weight of the car keeps the car planted on the road and feels quite secure. The car is still in the runin period hence i was making sure i stay on the left side of 100, however once i put the car in the 5th gear it becomes surprisingle peppy and responsive.

Yes, 1.3 is underpowered when it is fully loaded and AC ON.
Getz 1.1 is fine for city drive, especially bangalore, as long as AC is OFF and car is not fully loaded.
Regarding FE, what i meant was that the car has been giving 11 kmpl with rash driving. have driven only around 4k in the last 4 months.
