Hi Guys
I have a 2009 Model swift VDI and have completed 124k Kms, gave it for service as I kept getting this noise when I accelerate at low gears and engine response was very poor, also could hear engine noise inside the cabin.

Gave it to MSM, Chennai for service they found that there was oil in intercooler, they cleaned the same also did a 42point check, I have run 1000kms more now after service and it has improved to an extent but still engine response is very poor at low gears, couldn't accelerate that well.
Could you please advise if anyone is facing such issues?

Catalytic converter must be clogged.
Go to a FNG, ask them to remove the catalytic converter, intake manifold, intercooler and EGR.

Pour some diesel/kerosene in the catcon and let it soak for a while.
Rise it off with water and then mix some detergent in a bucket and let it soak for around 15 mins.
Take the catcon to a nearby car washing station and pressure wash it in reverse direction. Finally dry it off thoroughly using compressed air.

Similarly clean the intake manifold, EGR and intercooler with diesel and detergent.

Your engine will feel almost brand new.:)

Thanks Interc00led, I am planning to drive it for 1k kms more and look at how it goes, I was thinking about EGR Valve cleaning as I had done it long back.

Will get the catalytic converter checked as well, I didn't drive it for a year and a half as I was away, it was just started and used for 5 to 10kms run.

After returning got it serviced and have done 6k kms now

If your run is mostly in city traffic at low speeds then the catalytic converter is sure to get chocked.

Do one thing- Go for a spirited highway run, pull the car in 3rd and 4th till 4K RPM (when the conditions are safe)
It might solve the issue temporarily.

As others here have suggested, do the Italian tune-up once.

This is gunning the engine from 3rd gear almost till the car red lines. Do this is in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear as I feel revving hard in the first two gears is not much sense.

BUT BUT do this only when conditions on the road are safe else you'll land up somewhere else.;)

My 2007 Swift VDI is facing Engine Overheating issues. In October last year the Oil Cooler had gone bust and I had got it replaced at Mandovi Bannerghatta road. When the Oil Cooler went bust, Engine oil had entered the Coolant reservoir and had dirtied the entire cooling piping and reservoir including the radiator. All this was water washed and cleaned.

Yesterday while driving in the afternoon hot sun with the AC ON, I felt drop in power and Ac being ineffective. Looking at the Temperature gauge, Saw the needle hovering above the usual half way mark nearing red. Limped the car back home with not straining the Engine much. Even after switching OFF the engine and removing the key out, the radiator fan kept running for a good 5mins before shutting down.

What could be the issue here? Please help me.
Is it the Oil cooler gone bust again or is the Engine cooling mechanism (Coolant flow) messed up with my previous issue of oil entering coolant pipes. Or is it something serious like Head Gasket getting fried?

Edit: Checked the coolant reservoir, I see lots of black gooey stuff in it, But i feel it might be from the previous Oil Cooler failure. There is no drop in Engine Oil level.

Does Maruti offer warranty on replaced parts? Not sure if the Oil Cooler is gone bad again.

IMO, get the coolant drained from reservoir, radiator empty, drain the engine oil. Do an engine flushing at MASS and clean the radiator + plumbing from the reservoir to get rid of the gooey stuff.

I don't think MASS offer warranty on parts replaced by you can talk to the Manager and get some consideration.

Are you noticing any leaks?

As far as I know, some replaced parts have a warranty (I was told that there is a six month warranty on replaced clutch plates when I got mine changed). Of course the warranty comes with all kinds of riders about not being covered for misuse etc. The best thing to do would be to call up your MASS and ask them about the specific part and explain the issue that you've been facing.

Can you attach the bill ? I need to know what all parts were replaced along with the cooler .

I have seen this oil in coolant issue in few ddis engines at my mechanics garage but I will choose to remain silent for the time being.

As per the mechanics at MASS they too agree this is a common issue with ddis engines. They fix at least 6-7 of them a month with similar issue.

I do not see any leakage of Engine oil. Cant make out if there is loss of Coolant as the reservoir is dark in color because of the gooey stuff.
Is there any indicator that comes on the dashboard is coolant level goes low?

Plan to get the coolant reservoir, Radiator flushed. Looking at getting the rubber piping for coolant replaced as oil is known to corrode rubber in the longer run.

If the coolant goes below the low level, as such there is no indicator on the instrumentation console but the temperature gauge should be hovering above the half-way mark (Keep an eye on this while driving).

Do get the whole system cleaned properly to remove traces of coolant in the engine oil and engine oil in the coolant reservoir.

Oil is mixing with coolant and hence goovy stuff in coolant, get it attended asap. If the head gasket is kaput this can happen. EDIT: Since this is a repeat issue, i suggest you ask them to open the head and replace the head gasket nevertheless. It might have slight warp which creates the issue during hot climate? I somehow am not convinced on oil cooler contaminating coolant? Where do they interlink?

If the seal (between oil cooler and engine block) goes bad, this can happen.

In oil cooler there are two passages, oil flows through one and coolant through other (flowing coolant cools the flowing hot oil). Both oil and coolant are coming to and from the engie block and oil cooler as a rubber gasket (seal) which can leak leading to mixing.

Rubber gasket separating such a circuit  Never knew this. Man now am scared, usually it will be two sets of coil with heat sinks around them. Anybody has an up close pic of this? Where does this contraption sit in engine bay? Any idea?

Hi DreamDiesel,
The fan running for an extended duration with the engine off is not necessarily an indication of an issue. Note that with the engine off, the water pump would not be circulating the coolant through the engine block. The radiator & fan could be cooling the coolant down but it wouldn't be getting to the point in the coolant circuit where it's temperature is being measured ( usually the thermostat housing ). If you'd left the engine idling, the fan would've most probably switched off earlier.

That said, presence of oil in your coolant is a bad sign !

It is located just below the engine oil filling cap. The oil filling cap and oil cooler is as an assembly.
Check out the attachment.

If the seal fails then the oil and coolant will mix. The mating surface has to be cleaned thoroughly to prevent the issue from recurring in future.
