they are more interested in selling cars(no headache involved, even if a messed up car sell to an unsuspecting bloke)
and service(service is hugely profitable going up by 20% in some cases)
what can we do? well nothing in most cases

9) ask me:) its easier to convince the pump guys with swift than with a rare specie like getz. One fuel station guy simply refused to fill diesel until we showed him the word "DIESEL" on the fuel tank cap.lol
I had some puzzled looks when the car was new, but not for a while. I have to watch myself, though, because even after this time of driving a diesel car, I still say "time to buy petrol" to my wife!

8) Broken clips thanks to some polish work. Word of caution be very careful while you try to remove it otherwise you will break the lock clips. This is the second time for me thanks to carelessness by others. Good part of the story is, they are cheap :p

I've just joined the forum and as I'v' just set up a classic restoration outfit was hoping that my first posts would have been about classics. But a more pressing problem has emerged am just wondering if there are other members who have experienced problems with the swift Diesel engine.
Mines an '07 bought new and at 27000 kms I'v' just found Oil in the Coolent.
Unfortunately here in Pondicherry the Main dealer service has gone bust and the other Authorised service agent doesn't even have a Torque Wrench!! So far any of the Maruti Service dealers I've talked to Immediately wan't to change the Head Gasket-- I'm Loath to do this as there are no other Tell tale indicators of head failure ( loss of power, uneven idling, smoke etc..) So I prefer to exhaust all other possibilities ( Oil cooler , manifold O ring leaks etc)
Also I'm not sure I'd let them do it even if it is that-- car is still under extended warranty---- I'd do it myself. I've come across one horror story on a complaints site where the poor chap has ended up spending a Lakh in rebuilding the entire engine because the MAS guys changed the gasket at 9000kms.--- and Maruti refused to honour warranty commitments ( presumably because the MAS screwed the thing up in the firs't place Its not a complicated engine but is super efficient which means highly critical and if the Head Bolts loosening sequence ( let alone the tightening) itself isn't absolutely followed.. the head will warp within a few thousand kms---- so far I havn't found a single Maruti Service Mechanic who actually understands this simple concept alone--- anyways, anyone else had this problem?
First time being reported, i suggest you get hold of the regional service engineer from MUL and speak to him. Number, name will be mentioned in your MASS front office.

Today gave my car for 20k service. The SA quoted 6k as total cost. Do you think its on the higher side considering swift is in B segment ? My lancer 20K service has cost me 5K only..

6K is correct. Maruti recommends all fluid/filter changes at 20K. Fuel filter cost more than 1K.

service list to be carried over 50k.
any parts, bushes, belts to be replaced.
how about the battery, bcoz in service report they instructed mne to change the batteries though i have not faced starting problems.

But I think the Regional manager is only going to tell me to take it to a MASS and now the nearest is in Chennai-- don't fancy driving the car all that way in this condition ( what if the thermostat packs up- won't know if the engines overheating or not!).
Already the Mass guys in Chennai that I've talked to won't entertain anything other than the head gasket.
The real probem these days is that all main dealer garages are trained to a certain set of parameters and unfortunately traditional ways of diagnosis is not one of them. They do not carry out a sequential way of getting to the problem-- simply because it is a long and laborious process- its just not in the Main dealer operating culture (anywhere in theworld)-, instead they will first rely on the ECU's diagnostic programme, which - even on a Ferrari - won't actually tell you why there's oil in the coolent.
They will then go to the most common thing they can think of and .. in this case open up the Head.
I don't think its the Head-- my suspicion is that the Mass (ex!) here in pondicherry have been using tap water everytime theve changed the coolent during servicing, leeding to severe scale buildup which has split a seal-- most probably the Oil cooler. (although this could also affect the head gasket) either way having heard the horror storeys I'm just not going to risk the Main Dealer Garage, and do the thing myself-- now if anybody knows where and how I can get hold of a workshop manual (or even just the torque settings) I would be eternally gratefull.

Please follow the maintenance schedule given in the owners manual which should suffice.
On batteries - check the electrolyte density as well as the charging /No Load voltage. No Load voltage should be around 12.1 to 12.3V while the charging voltage should be 2-3 V more. These would give you the health of the battery. A good battery service center would provide this for you at a nominal charge or sometimes free of cost.

He visits these dealership under his region every month, so you can get him to check the car directly by him in Pondicherry itself. All you need is get an appointment with him.

50k is minor service, check you owners manual for details. No major replacements unless something is worn out.
Battery can be a pain, if its showing low cranking voltage time to get her changed. ie if its otherwise well maintained. If not get it topped up and recharged.
Hi Jaggu / All,
from last two days i have a burning smell ( like rubber burning ) on my Swift VDI , The smell can be felt from inside/ outside of the car, it does reduce if i switch off my ICE . But does not goes off completely.
The car is May 2007 and the ICE was installed by reputed installer “ Driven” in Delhi.
I have not had any major accidents till date , but last week left rear body was stuck with a big rock. I don’t see any connection but the burning smell had started to come after this incident. I have checked the engine and found no leaks and coolant is also topped up. Catalytic converter / turbo might be the culprit ( if they had taken a hit) ?
Can esteemed bhipians kindly suggest please:, I have a feeling that MASS will not check this issues as they might blame it to the ICE install.

I also get the same sound , but not every time. Mostly its while
reversing on the incline.
In my last service MASS had replaced some kind of seal , and the problem had disappeared . but its back after 2 months. I wil check my invoice and let you know.

I have a Swift VDI, clocked 3000km till now. Until yesterday I wasn't very happy with the pickup of the engine, it was good, but not great. I even tried cleaning the air filter (used your DIY article).
Yesterday after 200km drive, and some high speed driving (100+). The engine seem to be more responsive now. Is this a common occurrence ?
Also I upshift at 2500 rpm. What will this result in, mileage or performance ?
I have been getting a mileage of 15 with 90% AC (70%city driving). Are the mileage figures up to the mark?
^^ The figures seem to be ok for a 3000 km old engine. Wait till it settles a li'l bit (8-10K). Shifting at 2500 rpm is the best combination for performance plus mileage, IMO.
PS: Please use normal diesel only.
