That is the right time to sell a safari, because you can have all sorts of big expenses coming up, clutch, suspension etc.,

Yes, your 100k will definitely creep up in 4 years, mine has done 87k kms & will complete 4 years in another 3 months - your holiday drives will bring it up faster.

The point is - what to buy after the 4 years is over????

I really do not know.
There is the new safari with projectors and all, then there is the Thar which apparently is a lot tougher. But I find jeeps hideous to look at.
Even the scorp 4x4 seems to be good competition, but it requires visit to service center every 5000kms.
Then there is the grand vitara, probably the most reliable thing out there. Sudev's has dones 130,000kms, and still goes on and on, and she's seen roads worse than I have seen!

Dont thing we have another SUV here that does these kind of terrains so frequently.

And you expect the clutch and suspension to hold till 1lac kms ? :D

@ suman; maybe they will bring a 3L one with 200bhp and better built quality.

The difference there is that you'd be feeding it on petrol, which is liquid gold in sheer value. But then, being in Delhi and its whereabouts, you would still be enjoying it at a cheaper rate than us folks.

The Scorp 4x4 may serve you guys since you don't (yet) require the middle row - for us, it would be way too cramped, elbow room, head room, luggage room, everything! Even for you, I think you'd have problems with the steering wheel position. I've seen .Anshuman crib about this quite often & he's a tall guy.

Yes, the GV but the initial cost would be higher too.....

I agree completely

Benny, I think the Petrol & Diesel rates will come close in another year or so. But the issue with the GV is the low mileage per se. The Safari delivers 10-11 plus whereas the GV would (if I'm not mistaken) be in the region of 9. That is where the problem would lie

Another aspect that would be missed on the GV - the 'torquey' feel of a diesel powerplant!!

GV - SCORP - SAFARI - THAR - ? - ? : You win some you loose some.

Can anyone elaborate a little on this please? Iam quite worked up to put my money on one in a few months time!

Phew finally a status update which doesnt talk about any issues :)

I must say you have put the Safari to some good use which is what its supposed to do.

Btw in that video am actually more surprised to see a Swift in such a terrain, any details on that one.

Also does your expenses cover only what you have paid(Again Service & replacements should be different) or also what was changed/refunded in Warranty?

Here's wishing you, next 50k kms free of any issues :)

Tanveer do you have statistics of the total cost of the parts TML has replaced under warranty during your two years of ownership..?

For the story on the swift, you have to go through the travelogue...!
And thanks for your wishes!
Yes, the expenses I detailed(0.72p/km) is what I have paid, excluding tire changes.
If I include the warranty thingies, it will run to over 5-6rs/km

Not really, I am not tracking the cost of what I do not have to pay, only what I have to pay.
Anyways, I recall the following big ticket items which have been replaced under warranty
1. Tie rod and some bushes
2. Bearings
3. 4x4 hubs
4. Radiator
5. Injectors(2-3 sets)
6. Common rail, and related stuff
7. Fuel pump
8. EGR
9. Timing kit and water pump
10. ECU
11. Engine Head
12. Speedo and tacho console

TSK: Thar is really not a replacement for the Safari. It is more a bachelor/buddy vehicle. It can never be a family vehicle. Even if you do end up changing the rear seat configuration to forward facing seat set up it won't be comfortable from a family perspective. The Thar is really not a family SUV like the Safari, it is a very, very refined Jeep.

I agree with Suman's comment below. Once you get used to the interiors space of the Safari you will find it really claustrophobic in the Scorpio. I have driven my Scorpio over 10,000 kms and I keep thinking how cramped this thing is every time I step inside. It feels a lot more airy and comfortable when I sit in the driving seat of the safari.

Regarding the Scorpio 5K service intervals, The oil Change periords are not every 5k. The first oil change is at 5k then 20K and then every 20K with Maximile synthetic oil. Transmission oil change is at 80K. 4x4 Transfer every 40K kms. Front and rear diffs at 5K and then 40K intervals. The other 5K services are just vision inspections that require not fluid or part changes. In fact, I am not even going to bother with those 5K intervals which are just inspections.

They are more for peace of mind than anything else. The other thread about Captain Chandru from coimbatore, having a very high per km service cost is due to his mistake. He kept sending it with his driver and the dealership kept doing an oil change every 5K kilometers. Dealers will be more than happy to increase their income. I am very strict that the dealer does only scheduled maintenance as per Mahindra recommendations. For my first service the dealer added some rip-off item called Engine Care for Rs. 650. I contact Mahindra and they made the dealer refund the amount.

What ever other issues Scorpio may have the maintenance is really low and should not be a concern. Mahindra should do away with the 5K *service/inspection* as they are just giving an opportunity to the dealer to rip off the customer by changing fluids that are not required at 5K.

I feel it is best to wait for the upgraded Safari. Even with the new world SUV from Mahindra, I wouldn't buy any brand new platform for a couple of years until they iron out the issues. Atleast with the upgraded Safari, you know that 90 percent of the vehicle has been around for a number of years. I only wish they would improve their QC process and it would have been a no brainer.

Given the impact on raising diesel prices due to the commercial use, i doubt the govt will have the guts to decontrol/raise diesel prices drastically especially as we get closer to elections.

How about an INNOVA ? Comfortable as Safari, handles like a car & built to last.

I always thought it can't take the Ladakh terrain due to its low GC but it all changed when i saw Innovas all over the place in Ladakh. I think you just need a minimum amount of GC and the rest depends on the driver.

Taxi image is the only problem IMO:)

The Mahindra World SUV - that sounds like a good option for you, if it's priced right. M&M dealers have already had a sneak preview of it a few months ago, but T-BHP doesn't seem to have much info about it!! I'm given to understand it's expected in the 13-16L price bracket.

As to the Scorp feeling cramped, I dunno about others, but I'm comfortable - even 24 hours at a stretch. Between the seating comfort of the Swift, my earlier Accent and the Scorp, I prefer the Scorp.

Skoda Yeti looked (@ 12 lacs -Auto expo 2010) like an answer! But at 17+ lacs, it would not be.
