Dicor4x4,

The problem is definitely due to suspension / load on the right side.

From wikipedia:

Positive toe, or toe in, is the front of the wheel pointing in towards the centreline of the vehicle. Negative toe, or toe out, is the front of the wheel pointing away from the centreline of the vehicle. Toe can be measured in linear units, at the front of the tire, or as an angular deflection.

Camber: If the top of the wheel is further out than the bottom (that is, away from the axle), it is called positive camber; if the bottom of the wheel is further out than the top, it is called negative camber.

If either Toe or camber is not right, then tyre wear will be uneven between the outer and inner ridges.

Also if a wheel bearing is worn out, you should see uneven wear along the tread.

How often do you rotate tyres ?

hope this helps.

cheers!
Srini

Underinflation, or alignment issues. That could be the only cause.l
Since you are careful with pressure, I presume its alignment issue.

Yes, it is an alignment issue as I reported in the 40K service post. The vehicle will go back for an inspection after 500 km, after which "shim adjustment" will be done if the alignment is still out.

Rotation has been done as per the intervals defined in the service schedule.

definitely alignment issue

aha ! That is a clear pointer to the problem...definitely alignment issues (steering/suspension elements). I think the front right wheel now has more than the normal toe-out, which is causing the pull to the right, and also causing the tyre wear as described by you.

Once this is resolved, I guess you will need to put the current FRHS tyre as the spare (permanently) and then rotate only the other four tyres.

.

Please check right lower arm wheel bolt. I know this sounds paranoid, but I've had these replaced on both my Tata products (Safari and Jag) recently, both of which exhibited similar TYPE of wear, though not even fractional when compared to yours.

How did you not notice this uneven wear yourself so far?????

Point on right lower arm wheel bolt noted, thank you sir.

I did notice the uneven wear - it started only around the 39000 km mark. Should have taken it to the TASC immediately.

Hi dicorex4x4,

> Rear LHS tyre:
> Rear RHS tyre:

These are the some of the best kept tyres at this mileage that I have seen on any vehicle.

It does show the effort taken to maintain them in good condition.

The roads here do make a mess and my Marina Apollo Aceleres lasted for all of 33000kms.

Thank you, trrk.

600 km later, the truck went in for shim insertion for camber correction today morning. Back with me now - need to watch the wear. I also need to change the front left tyre on its axis so that the worn outer edge becomes the inner edge.

I wasn't happy with the effect of the shim (done at Prerana OMR Bengaluru) - seemed to make no difference. Off went the Safari to Concorde ECR at Chennai - diagnosis, tie rod ball joint bad. Didn't have enough time to get this fixed at Chennai - aforementioned part changed at Concorde Hosur Road (Chikkabegur). All problems solved - steering wheel which had tilted to the right is now back on track and the truck steers straight when I let go of the wheel to test.

42600 on the clock - no other issues.

Under extended warranty? If not, cost? I was warned about the tie rod by my alignment shop when I went there last time - planning to have it attended to in a while.

Unfortunately not covered under extended warranty, suman. Will post the exact split later tonight but the total came to 1677 - which includes:
1. Tie Rod - approx. 800
2. Labour for the above - approx. 130
3. Wheel alignment - approx. 400
4. Front fog lamp bulb (the RHS one had blown)
5. Tax

Since the vehicle had run more than 35000 km, any components related to the suspension are not covered under the extended warranty.

In my case, the bush had cracked and the tie rod ball joint had developed too much of play. I was with the vehicle the whole time (except when it was being washed) and saw exactly what the TASC was doing.

Hmm, that's strange because if you read the fine print, they mention that anything pertaining to the shock absorbers are not covered under 35k kms. However, dealerships do try & use the interpretation to their advantage. I will check with TM before I go to the dealership. Thanks

Tie Rods are not covered under Warranty - they are in a way 'consumables' as they deteriorate with usage (and with misuse as in my case).

Surprisingly, the cost of my Tie Rod (they called it wheel bolt assembly) was Rs.550/- (Talbros make), labour was approx the same.

Not covered over 35000kms, as you can see below.

This is the part related to suspension in my extended warranty booklet for the Marina.

Suspension:

Shock absorbers (excluding fluid leakage) bush \ mechanical failures, control arms, upper and lower wishbones, springs. Any claim for shock absorbers is limited to 35,000 Kms of vehicle use beyond which it is deemed to be normal wear and tear.
