The side steps take the first hit while off-roading and that is a very useful thing - prevents the rest of the underbody from taking serious hits.

Even though I was a bit extra careful in trying not to get the side steps "hurt", it did happen. I reckon this is the cost of doing OTR's (along with a nose damage that the vehicle got! )

Hell, I had such a great time, these few nicks are taken to be part of the entire package.

I did try for the HS number plate for the first go itself. But bad co-ordination and few other mess-up ensured that it did not go thru.

Will have a re-look at it in a month or two.

Happywheels, you are better off taking the bumper off too during a Serious and high end OTR. Though not practical, its very sensible.

Yes, just ensure you don't end up looking like a chassis driver (as seen on the highway)

Maybe he's too enamoured by his Red Bull that Tbhp has been relegated to the sidelines.

As of last Sunday, exactly 31 days after driving out of the showroom, this is how it stood:

Tata Safari GX 4x4 Mineral Red | 98,000 km and counting | EDIT: Sold-imag0078.jpg

Will write later on the driving experience, the way the vehicle behaved and all that later; until then, here is a shot of the Safari, at my ancestral home, with a shower and lots of greenery for company:

Went for a long vacation over the last week. vehicle started with 1544kms on the ODO and finally came and rested at the same spot a week later at 3000kms.

The early morning drive from Bangalore to Palaghat was uneventful. Good road, with the usual nutty trucks on the way. Had a white Corolla which was doing good speed, which I used as an escort. We switched spots somewhere on the way and this went on till I took a right towards Bhavai and he went straight. I was to see him speed away, when I was having my breakfast stop just before Avinashi.

The road presence ensured that those buses and trucks did not slow you down. They all went back to their track on this vehicle coming down.

Had one situation where one Zen just pulled out of his track to when I was overtaking him. Noticed the road side was not that bad and just went off road instead of braking and panicking. The Safari held its ground and we just got back to the road after overtaking the zen. Minimal bounces and circus. I was also lucky that the road side was not that bad.

Did a trip from Palaghat to Kozhikode, all of 150kms one way, of sharp bends and good rain for company. At certain sharp curves the front right tire was giving out screeching sound. This drive gave a good idea of the Safari's ability to take tight corners.

Apart from this, the ride, regardless of a well tarred road or no road (oh, there were quite a few of them) I was able to just ride on when others are forced to slow down. The only reason I had to slow down was to ensure that I did not splash water on anyone or any car when I hit a pot hole.

Family slept well as and when they wanted, played some of their games and the little one did her drawing / coloring and all that.

Did couple of extended-family trips, which saw 7 adults and 2 kids travel to remote villages for some outings. Thanks to the space available, all were able to travel in comfort; passenger also included an old granny with a bad hip and she had her first long outing after almost a year.

On the return journey had a friends wife and 6 month old baby accompanying us in the Safari from CBE to Bangalore, while he drove along with us in his Zen.

TO sum up, the handling and the comfort offered by the Safari is truly outstanding! With the family full time on the middle row which also included a infant, they never complained about any rocking of dis-comfort even under rough drive, where I drove over bad surface.

At one stretch, did close to 160kmph without realizing; need to keep tab on the speedo especially on good roads.

Not many photos taken, was too busy driving!

Back to the red carpet, now the only things missing are dark sunglasses and lots of gold rings and chains on you, but hey, where are the fishbones lying around on the carpet???

And what about the mileage Saar??
