Re: Need Advice: Choosing between the BMW X1 & BYD Seal

Dear Mani

Last week , while my wife and daughter were away on a short vacay, I dropped by BYD showroom in Gurgaon casually to check all the hype about Seal . 5 min in the showroom.and 10 min test drive blew me away and I ended up booking the car . I had no plans of buying an EV and that to Chinese Brad in the current geopolitical situation. But driving the car for 10 min and the overall package literally changed everything .

I drive a Superb currently which has a ground clearance of 149 mm and Seal has a GC of 145 . I did drive it over few speed breakers and potholes and surprisingly it cleared it without any scrapping .

I have been waiting for all new Kodiaq but it seems it won't come to India before Sept 2025 . I did check out Q5 , A6 in the showroom next to BYD gurgaon but after seeing seal none of these cars looked that appealing .

I haven't told my family about by booking of Seal yet . I would be taking them to showroom over this weekend to show them the car and take their opinion . High chances of them rejecting it outright as they haven't even heard of BYD yet . My wife being a private banker would defintely insist on going for established, tried and tested brand .

Glad I saw this page today and the poll result has astounding approval rate of 65% and above .

Before my family sees the car , I have few niggling questions in the mind :-

1. How would all glass car top handle Indian summer ? Met dept has already announced severe heat wave this summer.

2. What happens to the roof of car falls topsy turvy ? Will the galss roof be able to withstand the impact and weight? How safe would it be for the passengers? I had a terrible accident few years back on my Chevrolet Cruze where my car fell upside down after the accident . But I came out totally unscathed . Sharing the pic for your reference .

3. Those black blinds shown by the sales staff were very tacky. Not easy to fit through . What if we are travellign with those blinds and want to remove it midway , where will we keep them ?

4. Under thigh support and upright position of legs for the back passenger is a challenge . For outstation or long drive won't the rear passenger feel fatigued in that sitting position ?

5. Post poll govt is most likely to announce a new policy for EV manufacturing in India . Duties may come down to as low as 15% on EV. Won't that bring down the Seal's price by 10-15 lakh ? How about waltiing for few more months and then taking a call .

Lastly , it's not easy for early adapter's to take that risk and leap of faith for 50L OTR car . But the thrill of owning a vehicle before it gets adopted by public at large and enjoying the sheer power of Seal would be just another level .

I have opted for Black/Grey color but things may change if my family approves it . Next frontier to conquer post approval would be color choice ....

Will keep sharing the update .

Hope to get some valuable inputs on the questions posted by me above .

Regards

Hi i_nv,

I am not surprised that you liked the car, it definitely is a stunner (specially at the price point at which it's offered.

Now considering you already own a Superb, so space wise I believe you wont see much difference. Superb is a huge car and was on my consideration list before Skoda took it off Indian market (it's launching tomo and i will check it out too).

Rightly said, Kodiaq facelift isnt coming to India anytime soon too. The Audis you mentioned are much expensive cars but if you have the budget, you should definiitely consider.

But if you seek that thrill at 50L, no other option than SEAL as of now.

Coming to brand name: BYD is a new brand, not just in India but anywhere outside China. The company is striving to make it's name, hence they are also the title sponsor of Euro 2024. they are trying to establish itself and it's a time taking activity. That being said, it's definitely a reputable name within China and are known globally for Battery tech. I have personally experienced several BYDs first hand (not as a driver though) during my posting in China between 2016-18, so i am taking an informed decision as per my experience.

Coming to your questions:
1. Glass top as per company claims is Silver infused and repels heat. its gets hot though relatively but u wont feel like u r under the sun. it's as good as being under a regular car (i would still say 90%)

2.probably the BYD sales rep will be able to answer better. as per my findings, since it's a 5 star safety rated car, all parameters are taken into consideration. Had the glass top been an issue, it would have failed the NCAP tests.

3. those manual blinds will be a pain. Better keep it fully covered during harsh summer days or put them in boot. putting them on midway is a no-go for sure. this is something i hate too in the car.

4. under thigh support in EVs will always be lesser than ICE cars. but since it's a long car and has ample space, it wont be as much issue.

5. New EV policy require significant investment from foreign companies and implementation on ground. be rest assured, you wont bear the fruits of this new policy anytime soon (my best guess is 4 years)

BYD is a tried and tested car brand. they have been in space for quite sometime. it's just a new market, and since they are competing with brands who have been in the business for decades, establishing a name at that scale will take a long time. Happy convincing your family on that front.

Hope that helps!

Do you mind going for a test drive together? We can have the car booked for us for longer duration considering 2 buyers and we can probably share experience in real time about the car. What say?

Re: Need Advice: Choosing between the BMW X1 & BYD Seal

Hi

Sorry for the late reply . I was travelling for work hence couldn't get time to check out the forum messages .

There is a saying - "Travel makes you realize that no matter how much you know, there's always more to learn."

I had to travel to Milan and Venice for work . Greedy me , decided to do solo road trip to Zurich via Paris from Venice and took a return flight back from Zurich . Just wanted to explore the car scene in Europe and get a feel of driving on European highways . Another objective was to see how many EV's does one find on road and how the most advanced countries have adapted to EV.

After driving almost 2k km in both Italy , France and Switzerland I didn't find many EV's on the highway. I could see few Teslas in city roads but on highway didn't see much of them.

Most of the cars that I drooled over were all ICE versions . Least I didn't see any BYDs .

That's what reignited my 2 years old fetish of owning BMW GT6.

3-4 days of solo travel and lovely weather coupled with awesome scenic beauty gave me enough time to think and muster enough courage to go for my dream car . Towards the last leg of my road trip and just on French Swiss border before Geneva , I took that call that I have been evading for two years. YOLO was it . I am already 46. If not now then when ?

I called my ex colleague who now works in BMW and asked him to arrange a quote . By the time I crossed Geneva , I had the quote and by the time I had Lausanne I had added dealers account to my bank . At Bern I made the deposit transfer..

In 2 hours flat I changed the course of my life and didn't allow myself any time for further procrastination.

So buddy , I shall defintely miss Seal but at the moment my old love ruled over my recent crush .

I wish you many happy miles with your new Seal and Instill feel it's an awesome awesome car at that price .

Best Regards

Re: Need Advice: Choosing between the BMW X1 & BYD Seal

Dear all - I am on newbie so please bear with me. I have been driving Innova crysta for last 8 years and before that Honda civic.

I am now considering to upgrade my car. The choice is between BYD seal performance and BMW new 5 series which is yet to be launched. I went to the BMW bird Gurgaon showroom and was told that the new 5 series will only come by Diwali but somewhere I read it may come earlier. I am also not sure at what price it will come at.

I have already made a refundable booking of BYD Seal performance.

Here is my dilemma. I am not sure whether should I wait for new BMW 5 series. I know the price difference is huge but do you think it will be worth the money and the wait.

Thoughts suggestions views are most welcome.

thank you

Re: Need Advice: Choosing between the BMW X1 & BYD Seal

Hey everyone,

Got my Seal last Sunday. It's been 10 days of owner ship and I cant contain my excitement to share with you all. It's a new model and definitely turning heads on the road with its sharp design.

Here's a quick breakdown of my initial impressions:

Head-Turning Looks & Safety First

This car is definitely a looker! However, coming from a Honda City, it took me some time to get used to its length, especially in narrow parking spots. The car is much longer and wider.

Safety is a priority for me, and this car comes loaded with 9 airbags and a bunch of safety tech. Feels good knowing I'm well protected.

Joyful Experience: Every time I step inside the car, it brings a big smile to my face. It's been only 10 days, including a weekend, and I'm already loving it.

A Quiet, Powerful Ride

This EV is silent but super quick! There's ample power whenever I need it, and the acceleration is smooth.

The ride is surprisingly comfortable despite the low ground clearance on paper.
I've driven 800 km across NCR, and it has managed bumps and tough roads well, though I am always careful and slow on bad patches.

Cruising at 150 kmph feels like 60 in a regular car because of how quiet it is. No engine noise or vibrations!

Love seeing even ICE beasts in my rearview mirror.

Tech & Usability

The car is loaded with all the latest tech features, including a fantastic 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system (though not quite as good as the B&O in the Audi A4 I considered).

The cabin is very quiet, and the external noise cancellation is excellent.

The infotainment system is great, with everything at your fingertips. I did turn off the ADAS features though, as they can be a little intrusive on our roads.

A Few Downsides

Getting in and out (ingress/egress) can be a bit challenging for older folks due to the lower ride height.

The rear window is a bit narrow, which can affect visibility for some people. However, the car has excellent 360-degree cameras that you can activate on the steering wheel and display on the big screen to help with maneuvering.

Updates and Improvements:
After the latest update, there have been positive changes in the features.

Wireless Apple CarPlay: Apple CarPlay is now wireless.

Drive Settings: Once set, drive settings don't need to be revised every time you start the car. Previously, you had to turn off ADAS or other features you didn't need, each time. (no more needing to turn off ADAS every time!).

Fast Charging: The car charges quickly. I tested the speed and went from 82% to 100% in 9 minutes using an Indus Charger.

Overall, I'm Loving It!

I'm absolutely thrilled with this Car. Despite some skepticism from friends and family about spending 50L on a new brand in India like BYD and not an ICE, I love every bit of it.

The driving experience is fantastic, it gets a ton of attention, and the looks are just killer!

Congrats. The car looks lovely.
I find it strange that this EV is not sporting a Green number plate!

Congratulations on your new ride

Do you miss the connected car features? Did BYD India give any tentative dates for the same?

Wishing you a happy ownership experience. Spotted one in black color last weekend. IRL it looks droolworthy . What is the range you are getting and also could you share the On-road price?

Re: Need Advice: Choosing between the BMW X1 & BYD Seal

Congratulations man! The seal is an absolute stunner, it looks futuristic and fast as hell (which it is), while not being ridiculously priced. We need more cars like this in our market.
Only yesterday I was passed by a brand-new Seal and from the way it looked and zoomed by me I assumed it was a Taycan for an instant.

Coincidentally the Seal that passed me was the same colour, however it was driving quite rash and flashing their headlights at everyone like a Creta driver ... not saying it was you but considering how rare this car is at the moment I can't help but mention this

Nevertheless, drive safe and enjoy the car to its best potential. Do you plan to write a detailed ownership report in the future?

Edit: No green numberplate? Has it become optional now?

It is a Temporary registration plate. The permanent registration would have a green one.

No dates yet. To be honest, the BYD dealers are clueless on a lot of things.
There has been a significant gap in communication between BYD folks and their dealerships.

My dealings with BYD dealer in Gurgaon wasnt Rosy. It was average I would say.

But I dont miss anything as of now as my Honda didnt have iit too. so i am not sure how my experience will be elevated once I get connected car too.

Haha. Thank you so much.
No it wouldn't be me. Haven't driven it on that side of the highway yet. I live near Dwarka Expressway. been till Cyber City max. Mostly driven the car in Delhi. So unfortunately we havent crossed paths yet.

I plan to write a detailed review once I clock in around 3k Kms.

Green number awaited (its a temp number hence white)
