Tyre woes - Rs10,800 per Yokohama tyre?!

I am the proud owner of a 2010 Suzuki GV 2.4, to which i have recently fitted the Ironman suspension lift kit (which is great), but of course now the OE HT Yoko's look terrible. Huge ground clearance compared to before, but the tyres look strange in those wheel arches. So having done just 10k KM's on them, i thought very hard before deciding to at least look for AT tyre alternatives.

Imagine my surprise when i found out that there are hardly ANY tyre manufacturers that make tires in the OE GV size of 225/65-17. As a matter of fact there is only ONE manufacturer that i could find that has tyres available in this size: Yokohama AT's. Which is fine, i like them and have heard good things about them. So, made a couple of calls to dealers, who quoted Rs10,800 PER TYRE! Two weeks ago a friend bought exactly the same tyre for his Scorpio, for Rs 6,500 per tyre!

Now my question is: are the dealers charging nearly double the price per tyre because they can, or is that the price the company is retailing them at? If so, why?? This is highway robbery..

The nearly new OE Yoko's won't get me more than Rs500 per tyre, which means the 5 tires would end up costing me over Rs50k. For that price i am sure i could import any tyre ? ANy suggestions on what to do?

Firstly the Scorpio has 16" tyres with 235/65 I think tyres. And you are saying your GV has 17". The 1" itself adds a lot to the price and the fact that the size you are looking for is quite uncommon. Compare the no of GVs with those of the Scorpio.

10k is about right for a 17" tyre IMO.

Isn't GV tyre 235/60/R16?

I've purchased them for my Tucson for Rs.8250/Tyre.

But if it is indeed R17, ~10K is just about right

Yes thats the point. Just because the tyre size is uncommon does it cost the manufacturer twice the amount to manufacture and sell? I doubt it, so why the huge difference?

The new 2.4 VVT engine GV tyre size is 225/65-17 unfortunately, a size shared only with the Honda CRV.

Anyway thanks for the replies, gives me heart that the price is about right.. any idea whether the Pirelli Scorpion would be in the price range or not?

Its much more of a risk for the companies to import uncommon sizes, I guess thats why the higher price.

Pirelli's will be more expensive than Yoko's

My CRV came with the same tyres and they are bridgestone.

Might want to check with them.

Yokohama A/T are really good and nice looking tires.....Pirelli capturing the market slowly...I guess u should go for YOKO and if u want a good deal u can ask for Jitesh Kapoor BK Tyres (Lajpat Nagar).

Thanks

I bought Pirelli Scorpions 255/65/R16s for my Scorpio for 7100 per tyre in Coimbatore. At the same time quote for similar size Yokos were 7300. So i guess Pirellis should be in the same price range.
