2009 BMW 520d Side View Mirror needs replacing

Hey folks,

I own a 2009 BMW 520d whose driver side mirror got smacked by a guy on a bike. The mirror flew out n broke, and there's a small dent/hole in the mirror housing. I reattached the mirror glass (just clipped back on) and so now everything works fine like the electronic mirror adjustments, mirror fold-in, but I obviously need to change the glass and maybe even the housing cover if feasible. Please see the pics to see the damage.

Now I've been calling around trying to figure out the cost of the parts so that I can take a call on whether to just have insurance cover it and forgo my no claim bonus at the same time, or whether I can procure the parts from elsewhere and get it fixed on the cheap. Infinity Motors in Bombay quoted me around 32k for just the mirror glass and around Rs. 72k for the entire side view mirror assembly. Munich Motors in Nagpur (where I'm based) said Rs. 10k or so for the mirror glass and Rs. 54k for the entire assembly. This variance has confused me lots. I also saw stuff on ebay like this : Side View Mirror LH BMW 5 Series E60 2004-2009 | eBay which is also an option depending on how much the insurance ends up costing me.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone who has gone through a similar incident with his/her BMW could advise me on their experiences and the best way forward. Thanks.

Sorry for that.
I know maintaining a Bimmer/Merc could be expensive. But, 32grands for a mirror is exorbitant. At least, to me. Is it really that costly?

I have observed this variation in rates between BMW dealers but not to this tune. Do check with Navnit Mumbai too. I suggest you go with the Nagpur dealer as 10k seems a little more justified and you can locally get it rectified. Don't waste your NCB on this.

This takes care of fitting the mirror, which any decent workshop can do easily but the issue remains is sourcing a reasonably priced original mirror.

If you can get the mirror from the US you can get the whose assembly for around 700 usd is what i guess.

OEM / Performance Parts for Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mini, Porsche & Volkswagen - ECS Tuning

Check the above site if they have one for your car.

just the galss would be around 120USD.

Thanks a lot for the responses and the sympathy folks. The 11k was a mistake, it was for an unheated mismatched mirror. The price is infact 32k!! I'm pretty tempted to order $50 glass from ebay or somethin, though VW2010's link looks promising. 32k for a side view mirror glass is totally out of whack IMO. Atleast I won't have to change the assembly, the cover can be repaired, for which the BMW dealer quoted 13k as repair charges (again doesn't make sense to pay that much for denting n painting)! Will keep you guys posted. Keep the suggestions coming though.

You cant fault BMW for the price though. Vehicle parts which are imported into the country for sale as spares are charged a higher tax than when the parts come in to be assembled on to cars in India. Thus you see these exorbitant prices for spares.

This is exactly what happened to my new X3! Only difference being I got hit by an incoming car's driver mirror on a single lane road. Checked with service and decided to order the mirror. Yet to get the cost estimates. Hope they do a good job at fixing it. @sangtani - old thread, yet asking for info - did you end up fixing this at BMW service? or outside?

I just got it fixed from BMW and claimed insurance on it.

Not the cheapest solution but it is what it is.

I just had the same problem for an F30. Came to 85k odd@ Navnit Mangalore.
Had to claim insurance.
If its new, the plastic depreciation shouldnt be too high.
