Nano: Fitted with odd looking fixture spotted in Chennai

Spotted this NANO in Chennai (Cenotaph Rd - Mount Rd crossing) in the morning rush hour, with this odd looking fixture at the back, clamped on the central tail-pipe of the NANO.

Vehicle was fully instrumented and a gent was sitting on the left front seat taking notes and monitorng the instruments. From outside it sounded like a petrol NANO, (i had initially thought maybe it was the diesel nano doing the rounds for Indian drive cycle emissions).

If looked at carefully the rear bumper is bigger (extended on both sides).

Can the guru's at T-Bhp shed some light on this please?

Re: Nano: Fitted with odd looking fixture spotted in Chennai

Looks like a CNG kit. Maybe the bigger bumper has been fitted so that it can bear the weight of the kit.

There were reports of Tata testing the Nano with CNG kits about a year back. Maybe now with the refreshed Nano launched, they are looking to launch the CNG option next, alongwith the Diesel version.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing the pics, arjab.

^^ A CNG kit near the exhaust system?

I don't think so.

If the Nano gets a CNG kit, it is most likely going to end up under that small hood in front of the car, or maybe inside the cabin. But it won't be on the outside, especially at the back, where there is a risk factor involved, considering that cars get very close to each other in cities and towns, and even a small rear-end/accident could make a mess of it.

Looks like this is a test vehicle for load carrying. Sensing it from the roof mounted carrier. Of could be test trailer carrying vehicle.

Re: Nano: Fitted with odd looking fixture spotted in Chennai

i think the rear bumper has been extended to accommodate extra air vents to let more air in for cooling the engine better.
This definitely looks like a test for alternate fuel like CNG which makes the engine heat up more.
the big question is where have they put the CNG cylinder?
I am guessing its in the rear, because they have put on an extra load carrier on top for luggage.

It seems the rear bumper is borrowed from Vista and later modified.
IMHO, The container doesn't seem to be a CNG tank as it is just mounted above the Exhaust, which is generally at very high temperatures.
Don't know how safe this way of mounting is.
