My Polo gets BLACK badges!

My Polo was sent for a repaint of the bootlid after it was hit by a two wheeler and had a 10 inch dent and a few scratches, though an insurance claim was made, the service centre guys did nothing about the badges which can only be used once.
So the badges were taken off, the bootlid repainted to perfection (BU Bhandari guys rock), and my car was returned to me without any badging. The older badges were however returned to me in pretty good condition.
After driving the car around for 7-8 months, with a super neat looking "de-badged' rear, I decided to paint the badges black, and put them back where they belong.
Bought a can of Bossny Flat Black paint, tool the glue off the badges, sanded the chrome, and sprayed two thin coats of Black, the badges looked brilliant to me. But missed some bling, so bought a Bossny clear coat can, and after a few more real thin coats of black, applied two coats of clear.
Used some automotive quality double sided tape to stick them back. (cutting the tape was the most irritating part).
PICS: sorry for the quality of the pics, all taken from a blackberry phone camera, i promise better pics ASAP.

Its been some 4 months now and the paint and the double sided tape are both holding really well, despite the heat, rain and everyday bashings from the car cleaning guy!

Very interesting, DIY.

But a request. We need a better picture taken in a brighter place.
Thanks for sharing.

re: My Polo gets BLACK badges!

You can shed some more light on:
1. What exact tools you used?
2. How did you manage to align the badges so well?

May be, you could have also gone with "VW POLO", just my opinion.

Kudos!! That looks great in your white car. BTW, I would suggest you taking a snap from the distance. And me too curious, how did you align them so perfect.

Looks great! The white body color just adds to the effect. DIY + innovative thinking at it's best.

Can you please share the cost of the apparatus?

And now, awaiting high quality pics to understand the effect better!

Re: My Polo gets BLACK badges!

A friends 2012 VW Jetta Highline AT with the stock VW Badges replaced with GLi ones.

The Jetta badge has now been painted matt black and the 2.0 TDI has been removed

Re: My Polo gets BLACK badges!

^Hey thats real cool, the Volkswagen roundels on my car are still chrome, will get them wrapped in matte black or CF vinyl, because I dont think I can take them off without breaking them and then reuse.
And I dont want to risk my white paint, i.e. if I try painting them without dismounting them, even if I follow the elaborate masking procedure, I am sure it'll be real difficult.

The only tool used was a high quality paper knife and some good quality replacement blades bought from a stationary store. and ofcourse some sandpaper, if it qualifies as a tool.
I did think about using only "POLO TDI" but 1. the image in my head made the full thing look cooler and 2. these badges are smaller than the ones that came ealier when the Polo was newly launched, i.e. with out the "volkswagen" badging.

Sir the total cost of two cans of paint (flat black and clear) was around Rs.500/- and the super sharp paper cutter was for some 60 Rs. and maybe a 100 Rs more here and there, thats it!
The cans still have enough paint to colour two more sets of badges i think.

About the alignment, a photograph from a random Polo parked somewhere , some masking tape and lots of patience did the trick.
I used two strips of masking tape with accurate gapping in between.

These badges are wicked! Give a great contrast with the white paintjob of the Car.
Nicely Done

Re: My Polo gets BLACK badges!

Good work with the DIY, being a white car the black letters really look good. So the clear coat has protected the black paint from pealing?

Thanks guys, yes the white colour sure does make the badges look cooler!
Yes the clear coat does help protect the black paint, but the black pain itself was hard enough!

Re: My Polo gets BLACK badges!

Bossny Flat Black and Clear coat are Automotive spray paints or just multipurpose ones?
Are these also available at stationary stores?

Would you mind sharing the place you got this since you dont have PM as of now?

Re: My Polo gets BLACK badges!

I prefer using just vinyl. I'm running grey lettering on my white debadged indica - It's cheaper, gives you more options, and you can play around a lot!
