I am having one Esteem of 1991 model petrol. Now i want to fit diesel on to it. Can anybody tell what engine should be good for it and where i will get the engine and what will be the overall cost for this convertion. Lastly is there any problem in RTO registration.

Suggestions are highly apreciated.

BTW dude, the Maruti Esteem was launched in mid 1994 as far as my knowledge takes me. So IMHO, if your car is a 1991 model, then i damn sure its an M1000 that you are talking about :)

Still coming back to your query, i guess you can opt for the Peugeot TUD5 engine(if you can source it) that came standard in the Esteem-D. Anyways, Wait for the experts for their opinions.

The Toyota 1N Turbo is probably your best option.

emm, wanna gonna say the TUD5 engine which I guess should be easy 2 maintain. Have heard abt the Toyota engine, but haevnt driven one.

Even the Maruti 1000 was launched somewhere in '93, not 91.

@mitudas: Are you sure you want to convert the car? It doesn't make sense to retro a 97' model, as the resale value and modification costs aren't justified. It'll cost you a minimum of 50K to fit a diesel engine. Maintenance and other hassles extra. RTO formalties will be a pain in the neck, since it isn't legal, and besides, it would be far better to go for a diesel car as an exchange, rather than retro your car.

If your car has sentimental value, then well. The Peugeot TUD5 from the zen diesel (also found in later esteem diesels) will be a direct bolt on fit. Plus, the engine is VERY fuel efficient too. And you get Maruti's back up. Just ask your local Maruti dealer where to get one.

If your doing the mod to save money go in for CNG instead. ittl be a lot cheaper nd a lot less complicated too

The TUD5 is not a bolt on fit! You need to fabricate a plate to mate the engine to the gearbox. Also the work involved in fabricating engine beds and re-routing radiator plumbing is a whole lot more complicated, not to mention the NVH charachteristics of the TUD5. It is also a lot heavier than the Toyota 1N. Ask the Chennai guys, the Toyota is the most favored swap for the Esteem and the Gypsy.

:OT Hate to correct you on that buddy but the M-1000 was definately around in 1991. Don't know exactly which year it was launched though, but its definately not 1993 as u say since i myself had a M-1000 which was manufactured in 1991 but was sold in 1996 :)

Hyderabad people like diesel cars a lot more than those in other cities!!!

Having said that, the cost of conversion could enable you to buy petrol for few years to come. Also, if you insist on diesel, do chck out used diesel Zens in Hyderabad- There are quite a few out there.

Overall,the whole hassle of conversion might not be worth the pain.

Hey why do you want to waste money trying to convert your petrol car to diesel???? If economy is the reason do just what khanak advised u or maybe look at LPG.. Saves lot of money on both fitment and running costs... Also the reduced power of the car after LPG/CNG fitment, will still be greater than the converted diesel one...

It is really not that simple to change the engine of a car, and then expect reliability / performance and economy. A job not done well will result in a lot of $$$ down the drain. If you still want to go ahead with the diesel, I would suggest you getting in touch with Tutu Dhawan from Delhi and taking his advice on which diesel to go in for. He has done possibly the best Esteem diesel conversions in India.

For the sole purpose of economy, I would highly recommend looking at certified LPG / CNG kits.

@prince85: Are you sure? Because I remember the 1000 being launched about 3-4 years after the Gypsy, which came out in 88-89's...perhaps you're right...can somebody confirm the EXACT launch year? Thanks.

@jyoyeb: The TUD5 has it's own dedicated tranny, remember? Fitting the petrol's 'box is a complicated issue. Yes, the bellhousing is different, and would require a mating plate to bolt on the block. And yes, the mounts are slightly different too, but only off by a few mm.

If you're going in for the TUD5, then no point in going in for just the engine. You have to go for the entire powertrain.

As a standalone, yes, the Toyota engine makes more sense.

mituadas; My suggestion would is, if you're interested in a diesel, go in for a diesel car altogether. If your running costs justify the conversion, that is.

I am very sure my friend. My dad got for us the M1000 which was the best thing around in India during the early 90's. It was just before Christmas(December) in the year 1991.:)

BTW, i think it was the ZEN that was launched sometime around in 1992-93
