So I have a Maruti 800 and the drivers seat is very uncomfortable:
1. It doesn't recline as much as the passenger seat.
2. It's too close to the steering even after retracting the seat.

So I'm thinking of modding it by interchanging with the passenger seat.
Except, I will need to drill-weld a new mild steel bracket and raise the drivers seat.

What I wanted to know was the legal issues.. fines.. Can the Traffic Police stop me? I will check for head clearance with the front windshield and visibility of the front corners improves - anything else likely to make my life miserable?

As far as I know. It shouldn't be an issue at all with respect to it's legality. The one issue you might face is with the position of the seatbelt and the controls to recline the seat.
Othed than that, you're good to go.

I do not think anybody other than you can spot the difference so I'm pretty sure traffic police won't fine you. So, go ahead.

However make sure you fix the seat rigidly so in case of an accident or something it wont come off.

Have a check with other M800 if the issue is limited to your car / seat alone or a common issue. I don't remember facing any such issues when we had M800. And I don't find any reason for manufacturer to limit the driver side reclining.

Legality - anything that is changed from OE fitment is illegal (on papers at least)
It will be hardly noticeable, unless you confess to Cops.

You can try to source a good driver's seat from the scrap yards. It will be cheaper than modifying anything.

Well it's kind of done the seats are NOT interchangeable and I had to remove the angle adjust knob to get it to fit on the drivers side. Simple flat head screwdriver.

The seats mounted on one side with the two bolts and it's considerably elevated off the floor - it's got two raised angular legs on that side so..

On the other side, I just shoved a brick under the rear leg/slot to make the seat horizontally even - I'll get something welded in now that I've got it working/fixed in place.
