5.5L Diesel DI engine is made by Isuzu for GM trucks.
Torque is 380 Newton Metre[Nm]
230 BHP
KKK Twin Turbo + Intercooler
Compression is 8.2:1
Transmission is 6 Speed ISZ GL496S Overdrive on 5 & 6 th gear all Syncromesh with Dry Twin Clutch
Also Available with Torque Converter.
Weight is 490Kg
Availability is from Marine disposal engine Inventory Abu Dhabi, Dubai
Cost around 3.5 lakhs overhauled.
But it would require lot of fendition modification.
In our area 98 model contessa petrol is available for about 50K, lower models around 25K

Contessa was launched in 1982 with 1500CC Ambassador Petrol engine giving out only 45HP, that was too much less to pull this beast...later changed to 1800CC ISUZU in 1987 shelling out 75HP.....in 1998 optional MPFI petrol version was launched which gives out 90HP....Official Diesel was launched in 1997, in collabration with ISUZU japan...Thats why the OEM Diesel is 2000CC 55HP, ISZ+HM version...very noisy and slow pickup....

All original ISUZU Diesel engines other than OEM ISZ+HM were sourced as Marine engines from ABU-DHABI for throw away prices, later on overhauled and sold to customers with Diesel preferences...

In 1996 HM launched a scheme to convert the existing petrol version into Legal diesel version[legal Diesel Registration] , but the conversion process was hugely priced 1.25Lakhs, therefore no one took it as happy initiative...
Still non OEM diesels are ILLegal to Run and there is danger of Vehicle impouning by DTO or fine of around 25000Rs...but there are other way to solve this...I think everyone is familiar with it....

The 2000 model VIP Quota version features PowerWindows, Central locking, AC+Heater, Power Steering, PU mouled Upholstery + SU bucket seats[Thin type]......
But now its only available through a definate advanced order....

Gearbox: You need a better box the conti box is no good when it comes to the ratio's the qualis is a better bet or the scorpio's itself....
Clutch: Scorpio or a Qualis

How do you mate a tranny from one vehicle to the Block of another? As I've seen it, the main shaft (run by clutch plate) of the tranny has a spline matched to the clutch plate, so if you get the tranny from one vehicle you probably have to make do with a clutch from the same model. I expect even if you managed otherwise, you would have to build a new bellhousing, etc, to house the clutch and match it to the engine

OM616, most likely. The one that comes OE on the Tempo Traveller and the Trax.

I guess you can fit in all these engines (including the Scorp) into the Conti because the engine was mounted longitudinally (north-south) in the Conti, to start with, because the car is RWD. Some simple cut and weld jobs to the propeller shaft will make do fto account for the change in engine+tranny length.

What does one do for a FWD engine set-up? I have an M1000 I dont want to give away, and I'm looking for a used diesel engine to put under that little hood. Any idea what engine options are available, and where I can get them?

Hi Swathyd, whether this works or not, this would be one of the best transplant attempts I've seen or heard about in a while. Can you post pics, if your acquaintances allow them, of the job as it happens? There are many interested chappies here who might even be able to help.

Toyota 1N should work.

@turbodiesel: Compression 8.2:1?? That ain't no diesel brother. And if it's 18.2, then something's wrong with the torque. Just 380 nm from 5.5L? And that too twin turbo? And twin clutch, eh. Hm.

Also, when you said truck, if you meant CV (due to the 490 kg & specs given), then it'd probably redline before 2800 RPM. Not much use....

Kindly give power & torque at respective RPM's as well, if possible. Thanks.

And I assume you meant "foundation"..? Or the firewall?

I looked it up before I posted my request. I narrowed it down to the 1N-Turbo (from the mid 90's Tercel/ Corolla) even though I would have preferred something more powerful like the Golf TDi's, but I guess the M1000 does not afford too much space under the hood. Do you know anyone who might have brought the 1N or 1N-T into India? An engine thats done below 70K km would work I think. I found this on ebay! but the seller does not ship to India, and even if he did, I wouldnt like to get tangled in the customs hassles.

Hi turbodiesel, Good info on the Conti history. But with regard to your comment above, would it be illegal even if you fit a legally imported used engine?

Sorry , I got the specs wrong, my mistake
here are the correct specs
5.5 L 4-valve per cylinder V8,
550hp at rated 6200RPM and 680 Nm torque at rated 4500RPM
Compression is 21:1
Turbo boost is 100psi

Donot confuse Fendition with foundation
Fendition is an engineering term and is used in automobile engineering, its the mounting at which the engine rests.
and foundation is a general term

The engine could be a legal or illegal, the main thing to consider is to get it marked on the registration card of the vehicle by DTO, which is a costly process. Whether you fit an old engine or a brand new engine that makes no sense. what makes sense is the "Entry of that engine" on the RC with Engine serial number.

First of all there is no 5.5 L GM diesel. The GM-Isuzu diesel is a 6.6 liter V8 called "Duramax" and is used in their heavy duty pickup trucks and vans and the Hummer H1.

In fact Bob Lutz mentioned in an iterview that this engine would not fit in the Hummer H2 or their 1500 series pickups, forget the contessa
Power is 350 bhp. No diesel in this world will rev to 6200 rpm !!
As far as turbo boost, you are off by a factor of 6 or 7 at least.

I still have never heard of Fendition. Neither has google. Any links would be appreciated.

Still no updates/pics abt the project?

TurboDiesel must be TURBOSAM's brother.
