118NE petrol box will SNAP when you let go of the clutch. 137 D, the diesel version, that box may hold, but then again, I am not too sure. Besides, the ratios will not be too good for the Scorpio.

If you can afford it, nothing to beat a Qualis box.

sounds good, but what about the weight and weight related issues like chassis dynamics, dont know the difference in weight difference between the 2 engines

Simple points here:

Gearbox: You need a better box the conti box is no good when it comes to the ratio's the qualis is a better bet or the scorpio's itself
Mounts: Will have to be welded well and you may need braces
Rear diff: Get it off a conti diesel
Engine height: Shift the mount points lower and use the multilink driveshaft that comes orignally with the conti
Clutch: Scorpio or a Qualis

why not qualis engine and gear box?

Too expensive since its very much in demand . also, its NA. what fun would it be and the engine spares of the mahindra are peanuts compared to the toyota..

I saw a 2.4liter diesel engined Conti in Andhra many months back and that thing was moving fast even with a good load of people in it.

OM616, most likely. The one that comes OE on the Tempo Traveller and the Trax.

Umm - people have tried MANY engines on the Amby over the years. There was a chap in Trivandrum who got a court summons from M&M after he started retrofitting MM540 Peuguot engines on the Amby back in the early 90s. He stopped it immediately.

Any idea why the M&M sent him a summons? Is it against the law to fit another engine if it's endorsed in the RC Book?

At the risk of going OT, I guess it's one thing to do an engine swap on your own car but quite another to do it on a commercial scale! still - i would have thought it more logical for HM to be upset about this than M&M right?

There is a shop in Chennai (called "Top Gear", no less) who puts upgraded Isuzu diesels in Conti's and Amby's. When my petrol Conti was in his shop for some work, he showed me a 2.4L Isuzu engined Conti and claimed he could get 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6 liter engines.

Gears,
Red-One.

In kerala you cant get an engine entered into your R.C book. It is since 2001 i think. So we feel really dejected. Heard that it is permitted only in mumbai.

Can you give details of that shop in chennai.

I had an ambassador fitted with the peugeot engine. The crankcase had to be modified to keep it from bottoming on every undulation. The OM616 was a nightmare to fit because of the old paper element oil filter. The spin off filters made it easier but the engine was still bloody heavy.
Isuzu engines (imported) are available in 1.8l, 2.0l, 2.2l, 2.4 litre and with NA and turbocharged versions.
however in connection with this thread, I even fitted a Peugeot engine in my contessa a long time ago. The crankcase was nightmare in that and hence my personal opinion is that the Scorpio engine will be next to impossible to fit in the conti. There is a limit to how much you can raise the engine too.
