Warning: iPhone’s driving mode disables TPMS notifications!

Hello Bhpians,

I've been using the Sensairy Internal TPMS in my Innova Crysta for the past three years and have been highly satisfied with both the product and the service, particularly with Ajay, KS, who has consistently been helpful and responsive.

During a recent highway trip two days ago, I noticed abnormal steering behavior. After slowing down and driving a bit more, I felt the car wobbling. Once I found a safe spot to pull over, I checked the TPMS app on my iPhone, which displayed a badge notification and indicated a pressure of 8 psi on the front right tire. Strangely, there were no audible notifications, even though my phone wasn't on mute, the notification volume was set to 50%, and the stereo connected via wireless CarPlay was not on mute

The iPhone automatically switches to 'Driving Focus' as soon as it connects to CarPlay. Unfortunately, Driving Focus only allows call notifications and lacks an option to enable app notifications. Previous iOS versions had an option for time-sensitive notifications in Driving Focus, but it seems to have been removed.

In essence, TPMS notifications won't show up with Driving Focus on. The only solution is to refrain from using Driving Focus while driving. A workaround involves creating a custom focus that blocks distractions but permits TPMS and calls. However, this needs manual activation and deactivation for each driving session. Some IPhone forums suggest creating a shortcut to automatically enable the custom focus when the phone connects to Bluetooth, but it still requires manual deactivation.

This thread aims to bring attention to this issue, urging members to avoid potential mishaps and seeking advice on possible workarounds.

Best regards,
Bravo

Re: Warning: iPhone’s driving mode disables TPMS notifications!

Well in my case, I have never used this feature before for TPMS, but I guess this would be true for any emergency notifications like ECG/Heart rate etc. while your watch is connected to the phone.

Otherwise, I feel this is an excellent "safety feature", as I never get any sort of pop-up notifications while driving and that makes me keep my eyes where it should be, that is on the roads.

Possible workaround would be a physical 360 degree (3/4-second) check before you start to drive.

Does this “carplay” trigger (last item) under automation not work with wireless carplay?

I use a custom driving mode allowing only a couple of folks to reach me and no other app notifications. It is enabled automatically as soon as the phone is connected to wired carplay, and is disabled once it is disconnected.

Edit: For clarity, you do need 2 different automations for this to work. On connect - switch on custom focus mode and on disconnect - switch off custom focus mode

Thanks for the info. This should work with wireless carplay as well.
How did you set this automation. I tried but failed 😞 I am not that tech-savvy

Sure, I can try. Just make sure you setup the focus mode first from Settings > Focus > “+”.

To setup the automation - In the shortcuts app, select the center Automations tab at the bottom, then tap on “+” at the top right. This should bring up the screen I posted earlier. Tap on Carplay.

Posting screenshots of next few steps below.

Select “Connects”, “Run Immediately”. Then tap on “Next”.

Tap on “New Blank Automation”

Tap on “Add Action”

In the search bar, type focus, and tap on “Set Focus” from the list below

I am using the “Do Not Disturb” as an example here. If you tap on “Do Not Disturb”, it should show you a list of available focus modes (hence the caveat earlier). Finally tap on “Off”, to change it to the following screen.

Tap on “Done”

Once this is setup, you’ll need to setup a second automation that triggers when CarPlay disconnects. You’ll be presented with same screens, just select the options accordingly.

Thank you for sharing. I successfully created a new focus named "CarPlay," enabling calls from contacts and selecting specific apps. Automation has also been configured. The focus now activates automatically upon CarPlay connection (both wireless and wired), turning off 10-15 seconds after the car is powered down. Sharing connection disconnection notifications (top Centre)

However, app notifications are still not being received.
SensAiry (TPMS) is in the list of allowed apps

Notifications from sensairy too are allowed

I'm struggling to identify what might be missing

Interesting. I would check
- If there is any notification specific setting within the app?
- If notifications work when you switch this focus mode on manually (without connecting to carplay)?

I am assuming this app connects to the sensors and uses the data from them to send you a notification in case of an anomaly? How does it connect to the sensors?

I manually activated focus without connecting to CarPlay, and audible notifications functioned properly.

I've checked the app notification settings, but couldn't identify any potential issues.

The sensor and application communicate via Bluetooth.

Nothing obvious that jumps out. Have you raised it with the SenseAiry yet? Maybe they can help you troubleshoot/debug this over a call or in-person?
