Hey guys,

I need to know if there is anyone who will fit a wheelchair or a wheelchair system to a Ford Fiesta. I've seen a couple of cars with these things fitted, and now a relative needs one.

Any help will be appreciated. :)

Thanks

Those 'thule' cycle racks serve the purpose. That is if the wheelchair in question is collapsable.

Ferdi fits these kind of rack for the wheelchair..
Pictures are available check out Welcome to HandicappedPeople.com
but he is located in bombay.. contact him anyway he would definitely be able to help you out..

Yup, Ferdi is pretty much the best in this field. Call him; He will give you detailed instructions over the phone / email.

If you want him to work on the car, the Ford could be sent over to Mumbai via truck.

Thanks guys, have found someone in BLR as well. Will talk to both of them, and post the BLR guy's details if it works out.

I don't think it would be possible for a physically challenged person to plonk a wheelchair onto the roof of her car.

Just got a hold of these from Ferdi. In case it helps someone:

My friend had a 9 year old son who is differently abled and completely dependent on others. He goes through a harrowing time whenever he needs to be taken somewhere in the car as it is a tedious process. He needs to be removed from the wheel chair, picked up and strapped to the seat and the chair has to be accommodated in the boot (current car is an optra). The same process gets repeated once he needs to be put back in the chair.

He is now looking to buy a new car and wants to find out if there is some car manufacturer which customises cars to be able to seat people with disabilities directly in the wheel chair or any company which does such mods after market. He has his eyes on the Ertiga but is open to views from experts. He is not a member so I am requesting help from others in this regards.

Try these websites:

Hi storme'd,
I can make one suggestion. A van can be used to roll the wheel chair in from the boot area with the help of a ramp. The ramp can be fabricated anywhere, remvoing the dependency on the manufacturer.

Example:

Nissan Evalia (the one on the right), is a good contender for such an adaptation:

Here you wont have to get your son out of the wheel chair. This also means you don't have to pack/unpack the wheelchair every time.

What would be needed is a mechanism to secure the wheel chair once inside and there after a seat belt like solution for your son.

Wheel chair lifts are available abroad and in my opinion these are the best options as not only do they lift the person inside but also function as securing devices for vehicles.

Check out the website below. They seem to specialize in wheel chairs and related products

An interesting concept on their website.

Interestingly, even a WagonR is big enough for a roll-in wheelchair with a person seated in it!

There are some pictures in the home page itself. Hope it will be helpfull

One more option is installing a 'Swivel Seat' (Refer attached image) I agree that it is similar to the current process of lifting and put on the chair, but the efforts can be considerably reduced by just sliding to the wheelchair when removing from the car. Feasible and practical slution instead of loading the person alongwith the wheelchair, and making space..

Issue is availability of such seat in India, I dont think installing would be a problem if the seat is available..

Check the details of the product:
Basic Swivel:
The most basic seat is the manual swivel. Pulling a simple lever allows the seat to be manually swivelled through approximately 90 degrees, making it easier to either stand up or doing a sliding transfer onto a wheelchair or scooter. All basic swivel seats come with glide rails to enable the user to position the seat for optimum comfort when travelling. The seat can be used on either the passenger or driver side. When used on the driver side, there may be limited rotation.

The Deluxe range of seats offer more options. These Options include:
Electrically operated swivel
Leg and Thigh supports
Integral 2,4 or 6 point belts
Adjustable head and neck supports
Lumber supports

Hi

Despite being a long time member in TeamBHP, i didn't find an occasion or opportunity to participate in this forum till now as i am not so much into automobile as i am just a passenger.

I am using Powered Wheelchair as i am diagnosed with Orthogenesis Imperfecta at birth.

I am being transferred to car till now from Wheelchair, But i am now looking to park my Powered Wheelchair inside the car by reaching the car via a Ramp.

So, i would be sitting in the car on the wheelchair.

My Wheelchair dimension is as follows.

1.6 feet length
3 feet height
2.5 feet width

I am preferably looking to park by wheel chair in the middle row after either folding or removing one seat and by entering the car via the middle door via the ramp.

So, i would be either facing passenger in the middle row or would be facing the middle door.

I am ok in parking my wheel chair in the third row as well.

But i am not interested in major modifications in the car to accommodate me.

I have short-listed following vehicles for my requirement.

Mahindra NuvoSport
Honda Mobilio
Renault Duster
Mahindra TUV300
Toyota Innova

I am not interested in Maruti Omni type vehicles as there are some risks while travelling in it.

I was very interested in Nisan Evalia as i found that to be perfect match for my requirement, But unfortunately, Nissan has stopped production of that vehicle.

I want to travel in the car independently and comfortably and i hope i have reached the right place in getting help in this regard.

Please assist me in realizing my vision.
