Premier Padmini 137D Gearbox Swap

Hi everybody.

I just purchased Fiat 137D 1995 model 15 days back. It was previously column shift gearbox. Previous owner has changed to floor shift using the kit availabe in the market. But the gear lever is not working properly, mainly in First and Reverse gear. I gave the car for engine overhule. So at this time i want to change the gerbox. I like 118Ne gearbox. So i need suggestion from everybody. Is is direct bolt on fit ? or i have to do some modification. I am also attaching photos of my gearbox.

Thanks

S. Das

Send a PM to DHABHAR.BEHRAM and/or Cyrus43. They'll help you with the technicalities involved in the swap.

Shouldn't be too difficult as Premier themselves sold the Padmini 137D with a 118 gearbox in later years. The two were also paired in the 138D (diesel 118NE). Do look up this thread for more information on the 137D.

Hi Mituadas,
The starter motor is positioned on the right side of the engine where as in yours its in the left.
I am not sure about my second observation, Need to check if the bellhousing could be separated from the gearbox so that you have the option of making an adapter plate in between the 118NE gearbox and the 137D bell housing.

Congratulations Mitua Das on buying the Premier 137D. there are hardly any discussions on this car now a days. I had almost forgotten it existed. Our memories are so short. I had almost ended up buying a white 1996, 137D in 2002 as my second car. The asking price was Rs 45 K, a quite reasonable price then. But the rusting below the mat and the lower part of the doors made me change my decision. Though I liked the torquey, but noisy engine of the car. Its a very economical car to use.
Please post pictures and keep us informed about your car.

GB from 137D or 138D

Hi,
Could you please clarify me if the gearbox shown here is from 137D or 138D. All the best with your restoration.

The 137D was the Premier Padmini diesel and the 1.38D (note the dot) was the 118NE diesel. The above gearbox is from the 118 NE.

For purchasing gearbox i went with my mechanic. He told him for 118NE gearbox. But the shop owner showns us 2/3 type of different gearbox of 118NE . My mechanic check all these with a 137D engine which was laying there and finally he choose this one. Mechanic told i do not have to chage plate also. Only thing i have to change is Flywheel clutch plate. Anyhow from that shop i got the 118Ne fly wheel. So i have not confirmed it is from 137D or 138D gearbax. Any way others suggestions are most welcome.

I have changed the gearbox. Total works done is engine complete overhule, gearbox swaped and front suspension. Now i am loving to drive my 137d rather than my M800 and Santo. I am getting lots of black smoke while pressing acceleter pedal. My mechanic told to do a service of injection pump. Should i go for it or any other way to reduce the smoke.

Please go for the pump service, but do it with the genuine (authorized) service people.
Wish you good luck.
