May 2016: Two Wheeler Sales Figures and Analysis

A look at the 2 Wheeler Sales figures for May 2016. Number courtesy-Autopunditz

Overall Two Wheeler Sales saw a dip in May as compared to April. The total sales which had crossed 1.5 million units in April, dropped down to below 1.5 Million units. When compared to the May 2015 sales, most manufacturers were able to show a growth in sales. Over the last year, the fight for the Top Spot has been a 2 horse race between the Activa and the Splendor with the top spot changing hands between the two. However, in the last few months, the Activa has cemented its position as number 1. One key reason for this is the strong sales in urban areas. To give some idea of the dominance of the Activa, The 2,37,000 odd number that the Activa single handedly achieves is pretty much the total car sales for the month. Among the others, the Bajaj V is slowly but surely increasing the sales and is becoming a force to reckon with. TVS XL Moped shows a good spurt in sales. No other big surprises in the Top 20.

One other interesting observation is that, there are 6 scooters in the Top 20 from 5 different manufacturers. An indication that buyers are ok to look at models across manufacturers (keeping aside the Activa of course)

Hero Motors Pleasure and Maestro ironically are among the top in the gainers and losers charts respectively. This leads me to believe that there has been a switch in the numbers. Don't see a reason for the drastic change. Royal Enfield seems to have increased supplies as several models showing a strong increase from the previous month. Wego shows a big drop and all of Mahindra's models in the Top Loser Chart.

Manufacturer Level Sales Trends with Market Share and Trend Charts

No real surprises in the Manufacturer Level Sales in the Top 6. Status Quo maintained across the board. Some interesting changes in the bottom 6. Suzuki sales seem to be on the upswing while Mahindra are on a downward spiral. Even with heavy marketing, Mahindra does not seem to be able to make any kind of impact in the market.

Segment level sales based on CC

As expected the drop from the previous month most reflected in the 100-125cc segment. The other volume segments also show a dip. The <100 CC segment shows an increase which is purely due to the TVS XL Moped (Note: There is a 100cc version of this, but since break up is not available, bucketing it under the <100 segment)

Moped vs Motorcycle vs Scooter-Sales Trends

There has been a lot of discussion as to how scooters are making a comeback and are challenging the Motorcycles. Hence put together the above chart to show the Motorcycle vs Scooter trend. While scooter sales have slowly but surely increased, they are still ~50 % of the Motorcycle sales. Motorcycles continue to enjoy ~65% Market Share. But with the increasing popularity of scooters in urban areas, expect this difference to continue to narrow

Re: May 2016: Two Wheeler Sales Figures and Analysis

Thanks Rajeev sir for sharing the details.

Although the numbers are pretty less but still happy to see HH Karizma in top 20 MoM gainers chart. Same goes to Suzuki Access, a whole new look and design has brought in good sales compared to the previous months sales.
In the month of Mar’16 they had sold around 11.3k units and in May’16 its close to 19.5k, which is around ~42% increase in number.

-Badri

Re: May 2016: Two Wheeler Sales Figures and Analysis

There seems to be some mistake in the market share pie chart. Bajaj's share is being shown as 12% while in the excel sheet it is 13.58%. I think the names of Bajaj and Tvs got swapped as TVS should be having less market share than Bajaj going by the excel sheet.

Re: May 2016: Two Wheeler Sales Figures and Analysis

Is the TVS Apache RTR 200 not selling at all, or are its sales figures clubbed with the 150-180 cc Apache?

Cheers,
Vikram

Good catch. Only reason I can think of is that the Kawasaki Range is sold by both Bajaj via their Probiking Centers and also via dedicated Kawasaki Exclusive Showrooms. The number in the Bajaj section is probably what Bajaj sells and the numbers in the Kawasaki section probably is a superset. Not exactly sure how manufacturers report these numbers to SIAM.

Thanks for pointing it out. It is actually the excel table that had the mistake. TVS and Bajaj got exchanged. Will request correction in the main post. Updated table below.

Definitely combined. Had to bucket it under one category in the absence of the split numbers. Hence bucketed under 150-180cc.

Re: May 2016: Two Wheeler Sales Figures and Analysis

Is the list missing the Yamaha MT 09 or is it not selling at all? Yamaha has already botched up the pricing and not even trying(marketing) to sell the bike while the Z800 continues to sell in decent numbers. Going by international reviews it sure seems to be a great bike.

Re: May 2016: Two Wheeler Sales Figures and Analysis

Yamaha is gaining good traction in scoooters. I think they are able to push motorcycle sales too on back of it. If they build on this then I'm sure they will become a strong #5.

Whatever they have sold until now is very less or paltry at best. They will start delivering it country wide from this month end is what I have learnt. Lets see if the numbers improve from July onward.

I might have missed out something discussed earlier, but why aren't DSK Benelli sales figures included in the report? I could not find it on the Autopunditz website as well.

Kindly excuse my ignorance!

Not sure about that. It could be that they are not sharing official sales/dispatch numbers yet. For example in the car space also we do not have accurate/official monthly dispatches/sales shared by the big Germans-Audi, BMW and Mercedes.

the Versys is shown as a Ninja on all RC cards.. so it could be Versys and not Ninja, at both Bajaj and Kawasaki.

yes both sell Versys and both sell Ninja.
