Re: February 2017: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for putting the data together so meticulously

- Dominar seems to be strengthening its foothold. Truly well deserved!
- Look at the Himalayan! All the niggles and issues catching up and biting RE square in the butt. Pull up your socks RE. Really poor show
- Activa and Splendor continue to surprise me. Over 2 lakh copies sold!!
- Glad to see dismal sales for "premium" manufacturers with overpriced products

Next month will be all the more exciting as the 2017 KTM 390 numbers roll in. Bajaj is truly on a roll. Kudos to the team

Re: February 2017: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Great thread and thanks!

Some points focusing on the 150cc plus category:

- Honda manages to sell more than 33K units in 150cc plus category.
- Bajaj manages more than 70K in the same category.
- However, in spite of a good show in this category by Bajaj, RE CL350 is still outselling the Pulsar150 consistently.
- Gixxer does not seem to have taken off well. Hornet & FZ outsell it almost three times.
- The Market leader Hero is languishing at 10K figure in 150cc category.

Re: February 2017: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

My 3 Points,
The Good:
  • R3 selling better than Ninja for entire year! Quiet Impressive.
  • CBR650 does its stellar number in Feb, mainly due to discounts.

The Bad:
  • For Royal Enfield, the only volume product is Classic 350. No other product is commanding that kind of volume or sustained number growth.
  • Yamaha MT09 sells only 4 pieces in FY 16-17. Was it even worth to bring?? They might have not earned the amount of money they spent in launching the bike with Press-co with JohnAB and all.

The Ugly:
The headline number of RE are stellar, but if one dig down under the numbers, there is a sad story.
None of the neo products are selling in the market.
Case: CGT is doing dismal numbers. I was hoping that such a invested and well engineered product will sell well in the market. However that is not the case. Hope they recover the cost of development on this product.
Case 2: Himalayan is not exactly doing stellar numbers. Once the hype fades, it might settle further down.
Now if one looks at the product volumes, apart from classic doing 35K-40K units per month, the drop across other variants in 350cc class is drastic to 8k units a month. If one climbs the ladder, 500cc is hardly doing 1k units a month. The highest margin contributor (CGT) is doing dismal figures month on month. Now, with RE looking to eat a bigger pie in margin class, there is a limited acceptance for RE products in that above 350cc segment.
If RE has to churn out more new products in higher margin category, it has to ensure its cash cow (classic 350) is sold well. But how long will that party last???

P.S.: I ride CGT and hence keen interest on its performance. Don't have to start other RE bashing thread/post, your contribution in terms of business strategy/tactics is welcome.

Re: February 2017: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Regarding RE, it pretty much looks like a one trick pony. Take away the classic 350 and they struggle to even sell 10k units per month. But the 350 is a cash cow, after all how much does it cost to make any bullet model? Same chassis, similar body and rebored engine. The nostalgia coupled with the notion of heritage and pedigree is whats keeping them running. Interested to see what happens when a rival decides to nibble at the thumper pie... hint may be kawasaki

Re: February 2017: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

It seems that the Bajaj's Discover is lost.
I remember Bajaj calling Discover a legendary brand in itself. Guess they had to make-do with the Bajaj V.

I wonder how a Harley or a Triumph moped would look.

Hey,

One minor error TVS Sport sold only 3,417units. The volumes have gone down. TVS had a very bad month in terms of motorcycle sales, selling a total of 28,892 units for all its brands.

Re: February 2017: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda is KILLING it with the Activa. As with other Honda vehicles, I'm sure its margin is also industry best, considering the high price

But in all honesty, Honda's is doing a great job. Seems like its the next SuperCub in the making. Selling on average more than 200,000 units a month; that's 2.5 million a year. Its been selling since 2000. We can conservatively say Honda has sold more than 20 million.

In INDIA ALONE.

Even the N650 is outselling the Ninja300! It is clocking double the sales figures than it's cheaper cousin.
It seriously needs a price revision and an overhaul.
