To simplify, if the situation demands continuous momentum, switch off TC, whereas if you need max traction(wet roads, dry rocks, etc), keep the TC on.

The "Off-road" mode switches off ABS to rear brake, and allows some wheel slippage. It depends on the terrain and one's throttle control to decide whether to keep TC off/on.
Ah super! Thanks for the simplification, Justin - makes it easier to understand now

Guess I was lucky that everything just fell into place once I put out my query! Thanks Red Liner for the video (subscribed to your channel as well). Just a suggestion - music level could be lowered when the instructor is talking. You're loud and clear so the music doesn't affect

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

First in a series of such episodes, collated from my different visits to learn at Big Rock Dirt Park, near Bangalore.

This video is about vision on your motorcycle, where to place your eyes, and what the command position is all about on a dirt or adventure motorcycle.

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

Got a taste of little speed on trails yesterday with Urban Nomad. His skills are on another level and then there was me trying to catch up with him. He ended up disappearing from my sight quite quickly, even though I wasn't too slow.

Whole experience was an eye opener for me. Stock tyres on xpulse are quite useless in corners whereas factory suspension is excellent. Rally kit idea has been dropped, handle bar/ seat mod is in. Practiced a few jumps and learnt some tricks of trade.

Trail had a moderate level of difficulty, most of the part was manageable but had a few heart in mouth moments.

Catching a breath in between, Urban is on the left, another fellow rider in the middle facing the camera. Other riders whom we met midway are on the right.

The rally kit

Not as tall as I thought it’ll be. I’m a shade over 6ft in my boots. Can’t properly flatfoot though

Big thanks to @ast.ggn for the pic. It was awesome catching up bud. Hope to see you this week too

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

Hey everyone! First post here, and really nice to see some familiar faces. I'm Jayman, a rider from Gurgaon - the dude falling in the thumbnail of the first post on this thread haha.

A brief intro to my riding experience, I started riding properly on a Himalayan, moved onto the Impulse for I started racing and rallying and now I'm considering the Xpulse, with the rally kit. I've done 2 SJOBA Rallies and multiple local dirt/enduro events with some where I saw myself on the podium. I'm here to ask a couple things:

1. Have you ridden the Xpulse off road? What was that experience like?
2. How are you dealing with the front ABS situation?
3. Who wins and why if you compare it to the Impulse?
4. What's your off road experience like? (touring, racing etc.)
5. If not the Xpulse, then?

My main purpose with the Xpulse would be to ride trails, do an occasional rally, some small events and do it all pretty fast. Thanks and hoping to most more!

Hi Jayman, welcome to the forum. Most of the questions asked by you have been discussed in detail on Xpulse thread.

Link: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motor...lse-200-a.html (Hero teases small adventure bike. EDIT: It's the XPulse 200)

However just to keep it short:
1. It is a very capable bike off-road with a few mods of course. If you want to switch from Impulse, additional weight would be a negative.
2. ABS issue has been resolved by changing the unit at service center and it is working fine now.
3. I believe win depends on skills of rider in this case rather impulse vs xpulse. May be some other BHPian like Urban Nomad who has experience on both can comment.
4. Only touring till now.
5. There are lack of options in Indian market. Options left are dirt spec CBU kawasakis and suzukis which cost above 4-5L atleast. I hope Yamaha wakes from sleep and gets W155R here.

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

Had a lot of fun last weekend trying my hand at some hill climbs

Gotta say, the xpulse is quite gutless in the lower rpms. Even clutch slipping doesn't help much. Let's see if an exhaust and sprocket change helps

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

What a perfect thread to stumble on now that I am done pressing refresh every 3.5 seconds on the Thar thread.

I am really getting attracted to trying out some trail riding (including hitting some dirt parks around Lonavla or Pune). Although I wouldn’t mind trying my hand with a tiger, my factory tyres are just too road centric at the moment for it to make sense. Maybe on my second set which I will ensure will be more dual sport and 80/20 or even 75/25.

But mid to long term, I definitely think I would prefer a weekend 300 cc bike like what Hero will supposedly bring here. If not hero then a suitably modified KTM 390A.

I think regardless of skill level (and I am pretty sure mine is very limited) a smaller lighter bike will just be more fun all other things being equal. My tiger can be reserved for long rides to Goa or south or even thar desert type rides.

I guess maybe in a 4x4 analogy, I would say it’s is perhaps more fun to hit a difficult trail in a small Thar than a fully capable Fortuner. My conjecture I admit, will wait to endorse this with actual experience at some point.

For now, keenly following these wonderful videos as well as informative posts to read, watch and learn.

Great stuff guys and thank you for the wonderful content all of you.

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

With covid travel restrictions, all we have been doing is explore back country trails around where we live.

Enjoy!

Beautiful trail. I recommend carrying a little more momentum and try not to stop on inclines. Sometimes easier said than done, I know. Love the series. Keep em comin

Yeah this trail was beautiful.

The problem in these trails is there is just one rideable track. If the guy ahead makes a mistake or stalls, you cant ride past him. Atleast I can't, not with my skills now. I will probably fall into a ravine or something.

My other problem is my brain takes ages to scan the trail and map out a route while i am riding the trail. Instantaneous reactions are taking time. But yes i am getting better at it. Framerate rendering in my brain takes longer than my macbook air lol!

I must say though. Infinitely more fun and gratifying as opposed to doing 600 kms of road work in a day and bleating about it on Facebook.

That's nicely put. Even 10 km of riding offroad can potentially be a denser and more involving riding experience than 100 km of roads.

But highways have their own charm. I personally prefer cars for highways though.

Re: Offroad Riding - Tips & Advice

Since the pandemic took over the world and the lockdown limited the things happening around, I find myself missing a little local dirt track event and sometimes a full blown FMSCI rally. Ever since I got the bike and heard stories from my dad and other riders in our group about the Raid De Himalaya, I've been hooked but I don't think that the Raid will happen anymore. Which is truly a travesty. Has anyone here participated in the Raid? Are there any interesting threads for the same?

I've been watching Steve Kamrad, WESS videos to live that competitive off road life vicariously. The following is one of my videos that I often come back to, to relive my rally memories:

2012 Hero Impulse 150.

Sound byte from the "quickshift racing" exhaust I installed on my xpulse. Have also installed the rally kit. Will post a review later
