Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Has anyone been able to switch to the adjustable suspension on their non-adjustable stock models? Any experience?

Just spoke to SVC in Mumbai with front / rear adjustable suspension costing 23k / 7k, respectively with labour of ~1k. Warranty on the suspension is a gray area. Overall it should not void warranty on the rest of the bike (based on a phone conversation).

Updating the suspension would be remedying the biggest chink (of very few it has) in the armor. The pothole ridden roads of Mumbai in the monsoon are taking its toll.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

To find the neutral on the KTM 390 adv, do the following:

1. Bring the bike to halt
2. Shift to 1st gear holding clutch 100%
3. Without any acceleration, just momentarily & lightly release the clutch and hold it again (15-20% of the clutch to be released)
4. Now shift up and voila you find that sweet green N
5. Enjoy your break

Thx for the input.
I tried it as well

- “Slight release & press & change”
No joy

-Carried out adjustments to clutch lever as well.
No joy

Neutral just not falling in place!
Was stuck in a 1.5hr jam & my left palm started getting cramps!

Out of these 500+ km , Neutral must have slot in say ~5-6 times only !!!

Time to hit service & get it checked i guess

Your chain slack and clutch adjustment has to be perfect.

You will just know.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Hello Everyone, I'm in the process of buying 2nd bike mainly for weekend long rides. I'm expecting the new bike to cruise comfortably at 110-120KMPH without / very minimal vibrations & engine stress. My current ride is Yamaha FZ25 which is good at 80-90KMPH on highways, but any speed beyond that will invite buzz & vibrations. I have keenly considered Triumph Speed 400 & already did 3 test rides, felt it's a very peppy city bike but may not be comfortable for cruising since it lacks the top end.

Now I'm seriously considering 390 ADV as an alternate. I would like to hear from the existing 390 ADV owners' inputs on the below points.

1. What would the comfortable cruising speed on highways?
2. I felt an acceptable level of heat from the engine post 30 test rides within the city, will it be bothering on long rides?
3. What is the regular service interval? The showroom guys told me that 150 days or 7000KM, is that correct?
4. How is the long-term reliability & Maintenance?
5. Should I really need to consider the "standard" version over the "X" trim? my usage will be restricted to highway rides & no off-road.

Today I did a 30min test ride within Bangalore city, felt very comfortable within a few minutes and managed to find the Neutral as well most of the time. Now my only open point is highway cruising abilities and heat management.

Your suggestions & inputs will help me a lot, thanks in advance.

I am no expert on the KTM 390A, having just bought one a few weeks back. The veterans will be able to give you a better idea.

I like cruising between 90-110 kmph, but the 390A seems comfortable at even 130 kmph.

I haven't experienced any heat on long rides on the highway. Even in the city, the heat has been acceptable.

Every 7500 kms. 1st service is 1000 kms or 45 days, whichever is less. Second at 8500 kms or 180 days, whichever is less. Third at 16000kms or 330 days, whichever is less.

Too early for me to comment. The veterans can give a better idea.

I chose the X variant only because I wanted to save that 60k so that I could invest into upgrading the suspension to that of the SW variant. If money is not a concern, get the Standard variant only because of the cornering ABS.

My 2 cents to your query

One can easily cruise at 110-120 all day long and the engine would still return a good FE of 36-37kmpl.

In stop and go traffic (city), the engine heats up quite quickly, however on the highway you will not feel the heat.

I`d stick to a 5000kms service and that works well in my opinion.

Reliability and maintenance is a no brainer. Parts are easily available and not expensive barring some like headlamp or the speedo console etc.

I would suggest the Standard variant as you will get all bells and whistles except for the adjustable suspension of the SW, which you can anyways install at a later stage. The only issue with the SW version is that it comes with spoked wheels and tube tyres which will be a pain to work in an event of a puncture.

Any feedback on which one of the fancy oils will give the smoothest ride? Also where to get them in Bangalore.
I am planning to switch on my KTM ADV 250.

Re: The KTM 390 Adventure Ownership Thread!

Folks, how are you handling the windblast? The stock windshield throws everything right at my head, so there's a lot of windblast and it gets difficult to ride, especially hearing the constant noise of the wind.

Is anyone using the Prospec windshield extender? Any reviews or other recommendations will be helpful.

I am using the Prospec extender. Before using the extender, the wind used to hit just below the chin of the helmet and make the helmet unstable. Now, I have positioned the extender to get the wind to just hit above eyes. This helps in a little ventilation for the helmet I am using. This combo has left little wind hitting the chest area (will have to experiment without any wind shield for the summer). My height is 165 cm for reference.

For direct wind I have found them stable in speeds above 1xx km/h.

Which SVC you spoke to? I had a word with the spare parts division of KTM Goregaon, they claimed that even the part numbers for the SW's suspension has been created yet.
There is a seller on Insta - MySpareMarket who says he can arrange for the adjustable rear INR 7K, and front for 25K.

I am really tempted to get the rear suspension upgraded on 2020 bike.

Marol SVC. Have ordered the rear adjustable suspension for myself (2k paid in advance). 8-15 days is the quoted waiting for the part. Been told there are 3 others who have also ordered before me. Will update on this thread once I get it fit.

Price from the MySpareMarket handle seems to be the same as SVC but is it KTM branded or similar spec to OEM?

It can do 100-120 all day long as long as you have the roads for it. Brakes are equally good to support these speeds (I've switched my front brakes to sintered).

You'll have no issues riding this bike all day long. Even in the city the heat is manageable and won't turn your legs into a tandoor.

Here and there you will have small niggles (you can browse this thread) and you'll remain familiar with the SVC but nothing that can't be fixed. On the bright side maintenance and spares are very pocket friendly. Find a good SVC. I've done multiple day long tours and the bike reaches the destination without breaking a sweat.

Do get extended warranty and RSA, they barely cost of thousands.

This bike is more tourer than off-roader for most buyers. The convenience of using this as a tourer with plethora of accessories, the power, pillion comfort, safety features, etc. is unparalleled at this price range. I personally have used this as on 80:20 (touring : off-roading]. As I mentioned a few posts back, hope you never need it but always good to have the safety features on your side with a bike as capable as this one. If money is not a pressing issue to keep you away from the standard variant, go for standard. Think long term if the price differential will matter vs. the added safety you get.

Hope this helps and do post a picture of your bike here if you do get it

Apologies mods, ran out of my edit window hence back to back posts. Request you to merge.

That's great, I will try reaching out to them today.
Yes, MySpareMarket is selling KTM branded spares, they even had the exported models adjustable suspension some time ago.

This is incorrect. 8500 or 150 days and third service at 16000 or 240 days. Please cross check your source
