Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

Hello everyone,

This is the review of my Aprilia SR150, which I bought as new in July 2018, and to date, it has run close to 15000 Kms in almost 3 years of ownership, i.e, 14700 Kms.

Note: The pics posted in this thread were shot on iPhone SE 1st gen, One Plus 3, iPhone X, and iPhone XS!

Background:

I had started riding scooters when I was in 10th class and learned to ride on my maternal grandfather's 2012 Access 125, which is also with us now(now used by employees in mom's office)and ran just 25000 Kms in 9 years and I don't even know how to ride a geared bike till now. I had to use Access by force due to personal reasons and I had thought, why not having my own two-wheeler for myself? Yes, this was in my mind since I had completed 18 years of age and since then, I had started pursuing the degree. But, destiny had other plans and had to postpone buying a two-wheeler. But, in the year 2017, when I was about to buy an Activa 4G or Aprilia SR150, my parents had got me the Access 125 of my grandfather's and had to ride it forcefully and I hated the Access 125 to the core coz of poor brakes and suspension. But, I rode the vehicle for around 8000 Kms in 10 months on Access until I buy myself a new one. After owning 2 cars at home, I felt that a 2 wheeler is a must at home as I feel lazy in getting groceries by walk and I used to go to college by cab until last year before getting the Access. The Access served my needs but, after few days of using it, I felt that this vehicle is too old for me to use it for daily rides to college. Hence, I had started searching for a scooter for my daily commute since the day I had completed 18.

Selection process:

1. Vespa- This is my all-time favorite scooter when it comes to the looks. I had ridden my friend's first lot of Vespa but 125cc one many times along with dealer TD vehicles and I loved it. But, had to strike it off as the Vespa was expensive at that time and the price was more than Rs.1L(SXL) and only the standard version was coming in my budget.

2. Honda Dio- My other favorite one. I booked one last year by transferring Activa booking to Dio. But, destiny had other plans and had to drop this one and felt too old but matte grey is favorite in Dio.

3. Honda Activa 4G/5G- Every second or third person has an Activa. Many of my relatives and friends own the same vehicle. But, had considered this one as this is one of the trusted vehicles. It was there till final consideration until I had TD'ed Aprilia SR150.

Now, coming to Aprilia SR150,

I had ridden this when it was launched. First, I used to hate its looks but the looks had grown on me afterward. I had taken several TD's of SR150 and felt this is the vehicle which I wanted and made for me After TD'ing the SR150, I had decided to book it but destiny had other plans and booked Activa 4G and then transferred to Dio. That happened in the year 2017. And, after a year, I had earned around Rs.6k and had decided to book a vehicle for myself. Finally, on June 18th, 2018, I had booked my Aprilia SR150 by paying Rs.5k to the dealer and had to take delivery of the vehicle after one month of booking although the vehicle was readily available. Finally, after 2 years of convincing my parents to buy one for me, today I had bought my first ever two-wheeler.

And, decided that Aprilia SR150 will be my new love!

Booking and dealer experience:

I had booked it at Radar Motors, Uppal, which is near to my home. This dealer has another two dealerships in Hyderabad. And, I had decided to go to Uppal dealer as this is near to my place. The booking experience was good and my manager was Nikesh, who was friendly and polite. But, he later left his job in this dealership after few weeks of delivering my Aprilia. He used to call me frequently after I booked the vehicle and I used to say there is a financial delay, I'll buy it very soon and he happily agreed on it. On 21/07/18 finally, it was the day that I bought my vehicle and called my manager in the evening that I'm gonna take my vehicle today in Black color. He said Black is not available and he had to procure it from another dealer. And, finally, at 5:45 pm, I and my dad went to the dealership and completed all my formalities and paid full cash rather than buying on EMI. Since my desired colour was not available, my manager, who dealt with me, had sourced a black one from another dealer. This made us wait for nearly 1.5 hrs and told my dad to go home and called my cousin, who is also an auto enthusiast. Then, after few mins, my manager had arrived with my vehicle with 3 Kms on odo. Then, washing and fitting of accessories like side stand and floor mat took some time i.e around half an hour of the arrival of the vehicle, and Nikesh got my vehicle washed before fitting those accessories and got the side stand and floor mat installed and the vehicle was all set for delivery. Again, I observed few watermarks on it and immediately called that guy and made him clean the vehicle. Finally, my dream came true, and took delivery of my vehicle along with pictures taken by the dealer guy and my cousin, who has an iPhone 7 Plus. After taking the vehicle, I went to the petrol bunk and filled Rs.300 of fuel, which contained 3.7L of Petrol and odo at the time of filling petrol was 4 Kms and now I did 14 Kms after filling the fuel. As soon as I fill the Petrol in the vehicle, I had headed to the nearby Hanuman temple along with my cousin coming in his Celerio driven by himself and the vehicle got all the blessings and headed home directly after my dad had pestered me to get food for him. So, it was the chance to test my vehicle, and did it successfully. After getting food for dad, I had parked my Aprilia behind our Honda City.

And, the OTR of my Aprilia was close to Rs.84000(now it costs close to Rs.1.5L) along with the side stand and floormat and I had purchased a helmet from the dealer for Rs.3000. Now, the same Aprilia SR150 albeit SR160 costs around Rs.1.5L, which is Rs.50-70k expensive than what I paid in 2018.

At first sight!

re: Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

Continuing the thread from the above post,

My impressions with the Aprilia:

Performance:

Well, the performance is the reason why I bought the Aprilia. It easily touches 60 Kmph and can go beyond that easily without any fuss
Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review-c858ec180f7b426885bb6cb0904738eb.jpeg
Ride and Handling:

Now, this is one more reason why I bought this over others. I just love to do corners on this and doing cornering on the Aprilia is quite fun
Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review-b2037060dee84ff3be3c8ad0903cd548.jpeg
Braking:

I absolutely love its braking and in fact, the brakes are quite strong, thanks to Aprilia for adding disc brakes

Fuel Efficiency:

I get the FE of around 34-37 Kmpl, depending on how I drive. But, in the middle of the ownership, the FE got reduced to 30-32 Kmpl, which the FE got increased after I've started doing commutes and I got 40 Kmpl as well when the vehicle was new but I don't care about the FE much as I just love its performance

Looks:

Even after nearly 5 years of its launch, the Aprilia still manages to grab attention from the crowd by its looks. When I bought the Aprilia in 2018, it had double barrel headlamps, which was now changed to single headlamps in later versions

Now, coming to the advantages and disadvantages of my Aprilia SR150:
Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review-d68c3803f9834a0386390088f22269c0.jpeg
+ves:

+Bike feel-It gives more bike feel than a scooter feel
+Performance-It easily goes at the speed of 60 Kmph without any hassles
+Looks in Black-That's the reason I bought this over Race version
+Brakes-Way better than our Access, which we had at home
+Bigger tyres
+Service costs are quite reasonable, at least for me!

-ves:

-Headlights are poor- Changed it for a couple of times to LED and halogen but the experience was quite ok
-Uncomfortable for 2 people-I couldn't even sit whenever my mom sits on the pillion
-FE- As of now getting around 33-37 Kmpl depending on how I drive, but when the scoot was new, I got around 40 Kmpl of FE too but, now, not caring much about its FE
-Less storage space- I always need to remove the helmet whenever I store the groceries in the storage
-Harder Suspension

Service costs of my Aprilia:

All services were done at Radar Motors, where I bought the vehicle from and the experience has been hassle-free to date and made friends with the service guys as well!

2. Paid Rs.577 for the second service in November 2018 when the odo was 2658 Kms

3. Paid Rs.468 for the third service in February 2019 when the odo was close to 5000 Kms I guess

4. Paid Rs.624 for the fourth service in June 2019 when the odo was 7300 Kms and replaced horn switch as it went loose

5. Paid Rs.1750 for the fifth service in November 2019 when the odo was 9700 Kms by replacing the air filter and spark plugs

7. Paid Rs.6476 for the seventh service in January 2021, which was my first expensive service as well, when the odo was around 13000 Kms and eventually, replaced the battery, which had costed me around Rs.1650 while the whole service had cost me Rs.4826, in which I had to replace the battery voltage meter and whole clutch kit as well

re: Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

Accidents happened till now:

1. When I was going to my college, a lady on the Scooty Pep suddenly applied brakes and hit the Aprilia from the rear, which resulted in a broken rear mudguard and replaced it with a new one at the service center itself, which cost me Rs.530. This happened just after I completed 1 month of ownership with the Aprilia

Here are the pictures of the above incident that happened, which resulted in broken number plate as well!

2. When I was going home, a swiggy guy had hit my SR and my SR had a fall luckily I didn't fall but my SR suffered from damage. This happened in May 2019

3. Again, when I was going home, I almost hit a Vespa guy, who was in front of me by applying sudden brakes but nothing happened to my vehicle but my skin on the leg had come out a bit thanks to that Vespa guy. That happened in June 2019

4. I met with an accident in which I was almost killed but survived with a minor injury and meanwhile, the LHS brake lever got broken and the LHS mirror got bent and the body got scratched a bit. This happened in November 2019

5. I almost hit a stationary car when I applied sudden brakes but instead, I hit a street dog but luckily I didn't fell down. That happened in July 2020.

Modifications I got till now!

1. LED bulbs-I got it from my dealer during the second service and cost me Rs.1600 but later went kaput and replaced it with normal halogen bulbs nearly 2 years ago! Sorry for the quality of the pics!

4. Got the lower mudguard removed from the dealer after seeing the same on one of my friends Aprilia SR150 Race, with whom I became friends through Aprilia group!

re: Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

Usage pattern:

I used to do around 800 Kms a month and 40-50 Kms a day during my college days. But, since I've completed my graduation a year ago, Aprilia is restricted for bringing groceries and medicines, and food. In the first year of ownership, did 8200 Kms while in the second year of ownership, I did only 4500 Kms. And, after the lockdown, the Aprilia was hardly used as I've started using our cars for commute, but, since I was attending some classes, I had again started using the Aprilia with the daily commute of 30 Kms a day and, now, the scoot is mostly used for short distances and for getting groceries!

One of my favourite pics, while on a motion and was shot by my friend during the initial days of ownership with the Aprilia!
Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review-27850b56daa44faaab40d5d54ae30aa4.jpeg
Summary:

It's been almost 3 years since I bought my Aprilia SR150 and I couldn't be happier with it! It's one of the best scooters above 125cc and mostly suitable for tracks! My experience with Aprilia has been good and had good experience with the service centers as well! But, 2 months after purchasing this, the Aprilia guys had updated the SR150 with digital odo, ABS (which I'm missing very badly), Bluetooth connectivity (another feature I miss), and a price increase of around 20k! Again, they had upgraded the CC from 150 to 160, which is not a problem for me and not a big difference in terms of performance as well, and, now it costs close to 1.5L, which is way expensive for a scooter! I had bought this one for Rs.83k and within 2 months of purchase, the price went up to nearly 1L and now, it costs close to 1.5L after the new update to 160cc!

Will I recommend buying the Aprilia? Definitely, Yes! But, it's recommended for the people, who are ok with hard suspension and seat comfort, mileage, resale, service, and lack of compartment space! But, I won't recommend this to the elderly people, who need comfortable suspension as well as seat comfort, mileage, and compartment space, I would recommend going for the Access, Jupiter, Burgman and likes! People, who aren't ok with Aprilia's price and want the same experience as Aprilia, may go for TVS NTorq, which is nearly 30-40k cheaper than the Aprilia!

Well, done with the ownership review of my Aprilia SR150 and signing off with another set of pics!

With my fellow Aprilia rider's SR150 Race!

Congratulations on your ride, i hope it serves you well, i myself will soon be buying a 2 wheeler but am patiently waiting for the 450x to be launched in New Delhi.

And Buddy, don’t mind but i think you need to pay a little more attention to the road. That many accidents and that short duration is really dangerous. I get our roads and traffic is nothing to write home about but, these many incidents are too much. Reading your comments, i feel that you need to pay more attention to the road and the people on it and also please operate with a margin of safety to protect yourself. I ride a Harley 1200CX and despite of excellent brakes, im always atleast 2 car lengths back from another vehicle.

We’re the same age almost so i can understand why you’re getting in these accidents. Hope you can be safe in the future and drive carefully.
I’ve ridden an Activa for 25,000Kms, The 1200CX for 2,000Kms and driven north of 1,50,000Kms. What I’ve told you I’ve learned from experience and bad instances myself.

Happy & Safe Riding

I hope the dog's safe. I would rather hit the parked car than a living being! As a car would still be repaired but not a living being.
Is the black tint on the rear lamps still intact? If yes, I would suggest you removing those, they can be a recipe for disaster in sudden brake situation as a vehicle coming from rear cannot act quickly due to absence of brake lamp.
Happy riding!

Re: Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

Great thread there Abhinav, I've hardly seen so many pictures of a two wheeler in its Ownership thread, nicely detailed. As an ex-owner of an Aprilia SR150 race edition, I got it used, almost 8 months old and at 1300km for a real deal, just 57000₹ as against a new one that costed well in excess of 90000, I can only say that indian audiences don't value this race scooter enough.
Having owned scooters from almost all brands and of different ages and specs, I can safely say that Aprilia vespa is by far the highest quality product on offer, it's like VW skoda of the scooter world, their finesse and engineering quality is way above that of Honda and other Indian manufacturers.I did just one service as ASC that costed me 900₹ and rest of the times, it was a DIY, I also ended up replacing the battery once in 2.5 years. Just remember how this scooter never used to give up and could easily beat even fast off the line motorcycles, such a joy to ride it was. In fact I didn't like the NTORQ at all after this as it was too slow after a few rounds of the Aprilia, never really bothered about the FE though and have just one picture of it.
Would wish you many happy miles on it, ride safe and enjoy.
Cheers

Re: Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

Neat review. I had test ridden it at the time of its launch and found it uncomfortable for two people. Hence never opted for it, its best suited for 18-24 age group, where usually people are on the slimmer side.

Quite surprised to see the pricing doubled up in less than 3yrs, probably the only vehicle to shoot up this much.

Few questions:
1. Why was the clutch changed so early?
2. Is it that expensive (costs almost same as an Alto clutch)
3. Can it cruise around 70-75kmph without much vibes?
4. A pic of the storage area?

Rated 5stars for the thread

Thank you buddy! Yes, the dog was safe luckily, by god's grace!

Regarding the black tint on the rear lamps, yes it's still intact and haven't removed it!

And, thanks for the suggestion! I'll get it removed ASAP!

Thank you Dhruv Bhai! Good to know that you had owned an Aprilia before and any reasons for selling it off?

And, yes, why our Indians don't value this rare scooter because they need mileage, reliability as well as seat comfort and suspension!

I agree with your point that the Aprilia/Vespa is like VW/Skoda of the scooter world and in fact, the sales are also same as VW/Skoda as well

To be honest, my Aprilia can smoke an RE Classic 350 easily in terms of acceleration and can give the KTM's run for its money!

Thank you, sir!

And, yes, the Aprilia is best suited for the age group of 18-25, who doesn't care much about mileage, seat comfort and all they want is the bike-like experience in the form of a scooter!

Regarding the clutch replacement, the clutch was replaced so early as it had given up (thanks to my spirited riding)! To be honest, I didn't feel the clutch expensive, at least for me!

Yes! The scoot can cruise 80 Kmph easily without any fuss and didn't feel any vibes yet even after doing some crazy speeds!

Re: Story of my Night Fury | My Aprilia SR150 ownership review

What a lovely thread car_guy1998! And great choice! I personally daily my 2017 first lot Aprilia SR150 aswell, apparently the 74th Aprilia SR150 In Hyderabad. I’m inspired to share by riding experience of it soon after looking at yours.
Overall a good scooter and keeps up with the 200cc segment in traffic. Been thinking of updating the engine oil to Liqui Moly or Motul aswell.

Here’s mine
