Re: October 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

258 Bajaj Chetaks dispatched as compared to a mere 32 TVS i-Qubes!

TVS is quite foolish to restrict the i-Qube's availability to Bengaluru only.

With a top speed of 78 kmph, the TVS i-Qube is in the same league of high speed electric scooters as the Ather 450X.

Bajaj Chetak, with a top speed of 60 kmph, is a medium speed electric scooter, along with a horde of other products from Hero Electric, Okinawa, Ampere etc. which have a top speed of 50-60 kmph. Chetak is a premium quality product, no doubt, but it's still a medium speed electric scooter.

i-Qube can run rings around Chetak if only TVS were to increase production and make it available in many more cities.

Re: October 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

a4anurag, thanks for sharing the data for this month as well. For the manufacturer total monthly sales table, can we have a column on the right that shows the percentage change MoM as well? That will be quite useful to readers.

While I am sending in requests, for the model by model details, a percentage change MoM would be nice to have as well

A lot of interesting details are hidden in the data
- Huskies seem to be a damp squib.
- Pulsar 125 seems to be a big hit! Though we all love to diss Bajaj's dilution of all its brands (I am the first person to do so!), they seem to have hit on a winning formula here.
- Are the numbers for the Adv 390 and 250 baked into the Dukes?
- Honda's CB350 is missing from the dispatches list. From what I saw, the numbers were not very impressive and I think I predicted earlier that they would settle into the 5,000 unit per month mark.
- 32 units of the Vulcan being sent out is quite surprising, I dont think there will be many units dispatched in the next few months after this.
- Once the Meteor numbers start coming in next month, it will be interesting to see if it ends up cannibalizing sales from other models within RE's portfolio. From initial reviews, it seems as though RE has hit it out of the park and I think it will provide very strong competition to the CB350 considering the cross shopping that will happen.

Re: October 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Thank you Anurag for sharing the data.

HeroMotoCorp have increased their sales by a huge margin compared to Honda during the festival season.

I cant see Highness numbers in Honda. Any idea when will deliveries start. I would love to see how it impacts RE 350 series numbers.

Re: October 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

It's surprising to see such few numbers for the Husqvarnas, given their aggressive pricing and reliable underpinnings. I personally am a big fan of the Vitpilen and I'd buy it in a heartbeat, if I had the moola of course.

Re: October 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Hero Motocorp Destini in the Top 20 list and up 36%.
Hero Maestro up 65%.
Hero pleasure up almost 20% and matching Destini and Maestro.

I think this is THE big news. Honda needs to watch this space because if Hero Motocorp also takes a big pie in scooters, Honda will be hit big time.

The recent management changes at the top seem to have begun working their charm.

Re: October 2020: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

TVS and Bajaj two wheelers are home grown but for the two niche foreign brands Bajaj markets. Hence 13 % and 12 % of the market share being theirs are creditable. Brand RE can also be taken as home grown with it's 3 % market share. Hero Motor Corp is also a homegrown brand like RE . Both inherited imported technology from their principals earlier. It's worrisome to see Mahindra with a 0 % share even after the Jawa launch. Mahindra needs to Thar the 2 wheeler segment. It is presently Xyloing here !

Bajaj's Pulsar 125 launching has paid off for now it appears for Bajaj Auto, as with a sales figure of 65,648, this model @ # 10 tops the list of Bajaj bikes in the top 20. Too early to say whether it will erode the brand equity of the Bajaj Pulsar in the long term, with this lighter engine.

About the foreign brands, the HD exit will further dampen their sales till December 2020 (the D-Day) as more and more second hand ones are appearing from owners in distress sales. The spares and services are the main worry owing to such an hastened exit. The 0 % market shares by Kawasaki and Triumph are also worrisome as such figures usually trigger market exits. Incidentally, both Kawasaki and Triumph presently offer a good model range. Hopefully, the new Triumph- TVS partnership could be a harbinger for better times. The market share of Piaggio is shown as 0 %, whereas in reality figures in some thousands (4 figures) are seen every month since October 2019, though at 1397 units, their October 2020 sales the lowest since October 2019, is worrisome. Worrisome these days as going by precedents, we may be jolted to read one fine morning that such a company has exited a particular segment, leaving the owners in the lurch !

Noteworthy is the fact that the market biggies Hero and Honda are doing exceptionally well with their range and with their established brand equity, they with the other top manufacturers are keeping the market demand strong. Again worth noting is the fact that the Hero Motor Corp Xtreme 200 R has reported sales of 12000 plus units (only bike to sell in five figures in this class) as compared to the four figure sales of corresponding Bajaj bikes in the 180-200 cc segment and three figure sales for TVS.
