Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

I do not know what Piaggio is trying to do here. Having flagship brand "SR150" not even top 10, there is no point to bring more powerful version.

This scooter also seems pricier than what other competitors offer for. Also charging high does not make one Niche.

This shape is also not accepted by riders, see plight of Suzuki Burgman.

ii) Higher fuel tank capacity (7l vs 5l).
iii) Disk (with ABS) + Drum brake combo- a major plus in my opinion and one of the main concerns with Jupiter (although we haven't had a situation as such). Considering where I stay, the downslope at Chandni Chowk towards Kothrud can be a bit intimidating with a pillion.
iv) More digital nice-to-have stuff.
Have you considered the Ntorq? It fits all that you want but at a much lower price point.

One thing makes me wonder, am guessing we are the largest scooter market, but all in the sub 12bhp category. Why don't they start selling the more powerful, more premium options, here I mean all scooter makers. Am guessing there is a market for these powerful scooters.

Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

Bought a Vespa 125 in 2013 for ~80k- and looking at the slow progress of this sector in terms of value proposition, think this may end up becoming a lifer (unless I shift to an electric scooter).

Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

Definitely a wee bit expensive. I mean, c'mon though the Burgman has out of proportionate features with respect to its rear overhang, it was a genuine touring scooter. You can literally recline on the Burgman. The Appy seems to have that leg extension, but seem to be of more a cosmetic than an actual functional one.

I prefer scooters to be smooth. The Piaggio series are always rattlers for the most part, which I personally am not a fan of. Again a premium entry into a segment that hasn't opened up yet fully. Looks wise, 10/10

Cheers!

Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

Being an Owner of SR150 Race Edition, I would like to point out the dimensions of SXR160 and SR150:

SXR 160: 1,963 mm L x 803mm W x 1,205 mm H
SR 150 : 1,985 mm L x 703 mm W x 1,166 mm H

Is it the Width and and Height which makes SXR160 a Maxi Scooter ? while my SR150 is longer than SXR160. Of Course, Fuel Tank capacity is of SXR 160 (7 Litres) and SR150 (6.5 Litres)
Just thinking how a Maxi Scooter is defined.

The overall length may be similar but the rear tyre extends out of the body on the SR where as it's inside the body on the SXR. I guess the shorter length of the SXR maybe down to the smaller 12in wheels.

I don't think there are any set rules that differentiates a regular scoot to a maxi but with respect to their cc a maxi is almost always bigger than its regular variant.

Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

I thought they would emphasize on ride comfort for SXR160 but it seems to have the same suspension set up as SR150. So finally there isn't much to differentiate between the two besides the looks.
My father uses a SR150 for neighborhood runabouts, so its sparingly used. I don’t use it much as the ride quality is jarringly harsh (too uncomfortable) as the road conditions were poor so couldn’t use the power available too. Now that there was fresh tarmac laid this fall in our part of town, I can gladly look forward to use it once the winter is over.

So going by my experience with SR150, there are two important things to keep in mind before buying :
1. If your town or neighborhood doesn’t have roads in good condition, you will hate it. You wont be able to enjoy the power too.
2. If they have not improved the service interval of 3 months or 3,000 kms and you don’t like visiting service center frequently then it will be annoying whether you have high or low usage.

I think Aprilia should offer a suspension kit for those who prefer better ride. I have always wanted a suspension replacement for the SR150. Let me know if anyone has any idea about a replacement or modification for the stock suspension.

Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

Took a short ride of a friends SXR in the Matt Blue colour. My observations are mentioned below.

- Matt Blue looks very good in person, it would be difficult to maintain in our cities. I would prefer a normal shiny colour, with White over the Red as the Red looks too vibrant to live with.

- Fit and finish is ok, nothing too great. My Activa 125 BS6 seems better put together.

- Ride quality is hard for sure, would have to live with it on our super streets. Please do take a proper ride before putting down your money. Guess it would be unfair to compare it to my Activa 125 BS6 or the Access 125 BS6 as this one has sportier aspirations. Don’t know what air pressure this one was running currently though.

- Power, pickup, agility, again very good in comparison with the normal scooters but nothing phenomenal. Do checkout the SR 160 if that’s what you are looking for primarily. The handle/steering feel was again ok, felt a little heavy while changing direction. Roughly say around 10 to 15 % faster than the Access 125 in my opinion.

- Superlative braking, bite, feel and feedback. Extremely confidence inspiring, much better than bikes in the commuter segment. Did brake hard a couple of times to check it out and it was simply WOW!

- Vibrations aplenty through the seat, handle bar and floorboard. Not a smooth experience at all. Perhaps would smoothen after running in but am sure would be noticeable even then.

- Really hard seat, should be uncomfortable for long commutes.

Summation:
If it’s out and out a power scooter you are looking for, go the SR 160 way, the compromises this one brings are not that great to pay more than 20 thousand for. This one is for the looks and heart.

One of my old friends is getting a Red SXR by this weekend, will ride it again, much longer and more than once. Will post my thoughts after that as well.

Cheers

Re: Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh

Deliveries have started in Bangalore. IIRC the onroad price is around 1.72 Lakh. Accompanied my friend and his dad today, for delivery of a red SXR. Looks huge in person and the seat is spacious. Delivery process was smooth, with not much people in the showroom, basics explained, 1 litre fuel filled, time set on the speedo, key handing over and done. We walked in and out of the showroom in about 10 minutes.

Initially he had booked the black colour and then changed it to red after having seeing the scooter in person at the showroom. Red looks bright and sporty, while the black looked more mean. Orange Aprilia sticker on the rims is a nice touch to the blank alloy. The scooter is shod with MRF tyres as standard(not sure if it is mentioned already).

Aprilia SXR 160 long-term review after 04 years of ownership

Greetings!

This is my first post on team-bhp after years of browsing the forum!

Back in 2021, right after the lockdown restrictions had eased, and landing a remote job, I went ahead with the purchase of an Aprilia SXR 160 which I had my eyes on since the previous Delhi Auto Expo. The primary reason for me getting this was because I cannot really ride a motorcycle! And I needed something more powerful than an Activa and preferably around 150CC.

The choice boiled down to pretty much the Piaggio lineup in India - Vespa 150s, and Aprilia twins - SR 150 & SXR 160. The Vespa and SR 150 looked "small" relative to my size with SR not having sufficient knee-room for me. So, the SXR 160 was pretty much the only choice I had in the Indian market (Aerox hadn't launched yet)!

The test-drive was done on a Saturday and delivery, on a Sunday, with everyone masked-up at the dealership. The experience was painless and quick. The dealer accepted payment through credit card too with no surcharge (landing me INR 1.5k value in CC points).
Although, I was informed the accessories such as lateral-stand/saree-guard would be provided a couple of days later.

However, this was the only "satisfactory" part of the overall ownership experience.

The vehicle comes with MRFs as standard and do a pretty decent job. The engine is powerful enough for city use but has a lot of vibrations at low (<1.8k) and high (>4.5k) RPMs. I am on the heavier side and even with a pillion, there are no problems climbing out of steep mall parking lots from a standstill (had problems on Activa 110). The suspension is pretty stiff - good for highways! The LED lights are still brighter than pretty much anything on the two-wheeler market. And, the brakes are pretty damn good - ABS with steel braided brake lines, which saved me a couple of times from colliding with animals running into the roads. The warranty is best in class (afaik) - 5 years standard! And finally, after 04 years of travel through dust, grime and poluution, the paint still holds up - it still looks beautiful!

However, the rest of the experience that comes with owning the vehicle is not! This post might seem like a rant (in a way it is) but I had to get this out there to any prospective buyers considering this vehicle. Below is a list of issues I have faced over the past 04 years of ownership of vehicle including experience at the 02 Service Centres in my city (Guwahati):
  • Had to call RSA about 05 times during first year of purchase - The vehicle would refuse to start after about 20 KM of travel, and then magically work again after letting it "cool down" for a couple of hours - later turned out to be a problem with the fuel pump or injector (SC never clarified the exact issue - but replaced the part a year later)
  • Screws/nuts/bolts missing from chain-cover, handle, fairing, etc. - Happened over multiple visits, SC refuses to acknowledge initially while asking to pay me for the missing bolts.
  • Lack of parts/availability - parts such as luggage hook not available for past 06 months (took 13 months to get lateral foot rest promised during vehicle delivery).
  • Drunk SC staff asking me to pay under table (pay without invoice to save money) - was my first time visiting this newly opened SC, never visited again.
  • Fuel stolen 03 times - that I noticed so far.
  • Absolute refusal to do any service work saying the “parts are not sturdy enough” and “any service would be on my risk” even when the manual states periodic service of such component - eg. suspension related checks, adjustable suspension should not adjusted.
  • Absolutely unprofessional/untrained workforce - saw mechanic pour engine oil in gear oil slot of adjacent vehicle - when confronted, he just stuttered and went away
  • UNCLEAR pricing & warranty practices - Refusal of Headlamp replacement under warranty due to discolouration - SC refused to acknowledge/process for warranty during service visit multiple times saying that they do not have enough time and would do it “during next service”. Starter motor - not covered under warranty?!
A simple service visit requires more effort than booking a railway Tatkal ticket - either reach SC by 9 AM and form a line and be lucky to be among the first 5-7 vehicles, or leave vehicle overnight and receive it the next evening (if lucky).
Aprilia SXR 160 launched at Rs. 1.26 lakh-20221107_090014.jpg

As far as I can tell, most of the issues I've had with the ownership experience is related to the SC - the product itself is decent, but with 4 scheduled visits a year, the SC experience is something that needs to be taken into account and might not be everyone's cup of tea.

In 2021, this was pretty much the only 160 CC two-wheeler scooter, barring a Vespa, that existed in the Indian market. In 2025, the story is a bit different - multiple (& better) choices do exist - from an Ather to a Yamaha. (Or spend 5-10k more to get an RE) So, if someone is looking out for a ~150 CC scooter, please do take test-rides to find what fits you better but also consider the post-purchase experience too.

And remember, purchase happens once, but service every few months in a vehicles lifecycle.

I hope my experience provides some clarity to people looking at this SXR 160 as an option.

tldr: beautiful machine, terrible SC experience - choose wisely!

Requesting the mods to move this to appropriate section.
